As the playoffs draws near, the Toronto Maple Leafs won a couple of nail biters recently that could put them into the post season for the first time since 2003. After losing to Philadelphia, 5-3, the Leafs bounced back and beat New Jersey on the weekend 2-1.  ”We needed to rebound (from the loss to the Flyers),” said Leaf’s head coach, Randy Carlyle. Leaf’s goalie made 27 saves. The Leafs next opponent would be the New York Rangers in a home and home  series. James Van Reimsdyk  opened the scoring in the first period in the first game.  They then made it 2-0 early in the second period. Even though they gave up a 3-1 early in the third period, they managed to win it 4-3.  Phil Kessel scored the winning goal on his own rebound.  He ended up with three points in the game (two goals, one assist). Van Reimsdyk got two points during the game (one goal, one assist).  ”We had a contribution from everybody,” said Carlyle. Reimer had a good night as well, making 31 saves. In the second game, the Leafs played well in the first period and early in the second period. However, by the end of the second (period), the Rangers dominated and took a 2-1 lead going into the third period. Tied 2-2, both the third and the overtime periods had end to end action.  Unfortunately, nothing was solved after 65 minutes of play, so the game went to a shoot out.  The Rangers snapped the Leaf’s winning streak by defeating them 3-2.  ”We got the point and we’re going to move on,” said Carlyle. As I watched the last two periods, I couldn’t help notice how sloppy the Leafs were playing.  They look absolutely awful half-way through the second period.  What concerns me is, even if the Leafs make it to the playoffs, I don’t think this team will get past the first round, especially if they have to face Boston or the Rangers.  I don’t know if their good enough to compete against these teams. Meanwhile, they will face their rivals , the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.
