Phil Kessel has scored five goals in three games, including a hat-trick against Anaheim, his fourth in his career. This past week has been good for Phil Kessel.  He recorded his fourth career hat-trick (second as a Leaf) in a 4-2 win  the over the Anaheim Ducks, scored a goal in a  5-2 loss against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and scored another goal in a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. That’s five goals in three games.  It wouldn’t surprise  me a bit if Kessel is named in the Three Stars of the Week category.  Right now, Kessel is hot. As for the Toronto Maple Leafs, This past week was a roller coaster ride. The Leafs came back from a 2-0 deficit i the second period to defeat the Ducks earlier in the week. The turning point in that game was when the Leafs killed a 1:27 two man advantaged shortly after tying the game at two. Leaf’s goalie, Jonathan Bernier made 23 saves during the game. The Leafs next opponent  was the Columbus Blue Jackets.  With  a 4-5 record, it is hard to imagine the Leafs losing  to Columbus.  After all, the Leafs were 7-3. Well guess what?  The Leafs lost.  ”We  didn’t have a really good start to the hockey game at all,” said Leaf’s head coach Randy Carlyle during the post game press conference. Probably the worst period in the game for the Leafs was the third.  Man!  Toronto played sloppy in their own zone.  I changed the channel after the Jackets scored their third goal and never looked back.  It was painful to watch. Bernier made 31 saves during the game. The next night, the Leafs hosted the Penguins and made up for that bad loss against Columbus with a victory.  ”We were bound and determine to make amends from last night,” said Carlyle. Dave Bolland scored two goals during the game, including an empty netter. James Reimer was brilliant in goal, making 37 saves.  ”You don’t win in this league without goal tending that gives you a chance (to win),” Carlyle said. The Leafs face the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.  The last time Toronto played against the Oilers, the Leafs won in overtime 6-5.
