In March, the Towson University baseball team used duct tape to cover the “Towson” on their jersey, masking association with a school that planned to cut the team at season’s end and refused new budget proposals as well as a donation totalling $18,000 that would have saved the the program. The following month, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley carved $300,000 out of the state’s FY14 Supplemental Budget to support the team through the 2015 season.  As if pulled from a movie script, the team finished their season by beating William & Mary to capture the school’s first ever CAA Championship, an impressive feat for a squad that spent much of the season facing an unknown future. Last week, the members of the team were awarded their championship rings. And, do they ever reward the squad for fighting against the season’s adversity. “No one could write a better ending to a story than how we ended it,” said current sophomore pitcher, and friend of The Hall of Very Good, Garrett Walther. “We couldn’t have done it without all the support from our parents and supporters.” When asked in March about his plans for his collegiate future, Walther was unsure of his next move, but said he was open to look into any school that would contact him, and hoped the last game of the season -- and of the program’s foreseeable future -- would bring a big crowd of supporters. Now, Walther has a more clear view of his future, a future that involves Towson University, baseball and more championship rings. “We will definitely come shooting for another championship this year,” said Walther, “and show everyone that they almost made the biggest mistake in Towson Athletic’s history.”
