When the Oakland Athletics traded Dan Haren after the 2007 season they landed a package of six-players that included Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, and Chris Carter. Now, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, they are looking for a similar return for Gio Gonzalez.
To put those players in context, one was ranked as high as No. 7 on Baseball America’s Prospect Ratings, one reached the No. 18 slot, another reached No. 28, and finally another reached the No. 55 spot. The only two players in the deal that didn’t reach BA’s top 100 at some point in their careers were a pair of left handed pitchers.
Two things jump into my head when looking at that deal. The first is, what were the Diamondbacks thinking? And the other is that if the Yankees are expected to match that for Gonzalez, there is no way he is ever coming to the Bronx.
