The Associated Press reports that the Mets have signed free agent reliever Kiko Calero to a minor league contract. Despite an excellent season in South Florida, injury concerns had limited the interest he drew from major league clubs. The contract will pay him $850,000 should he break camp with the team with performance bonuses that could push the deal's total value to $1.5 million.
Calero posted a 2-2 record and a 1.95 ERA in 67 relief appearances with the Marlins in 2009. He had the lowest ERA and the best peripheral rate stats on the Marlins staff last season. The 35 year-old righty will likely be used in a setup role for the Mets, should he make the big club out of spring training. The Mets had previously signed Kelvim Escobar to fill that role in the pen, but he is not expected to be ready for Opening Day as he rehabs from shoulder woes.
