Chia-Jen Lo's 93-mph first-pitch fastball jumped off Chris Colabello's bat and soared majestically toward the Houston Astros bullpen in deep right-center field. Some 393 feet later in the top of the ninth inning the Twins' prove-it-to-me rookie slugger had his first big-league grand slam and the Twins had completed their Labor Day comeback with eight unanswered runs in a 10-6 win over baseball's worst team. "I've never seen anybody with that kind of opposite-field power" said Twins catcher Chris Herrmann who was on first base at the time. "You see Miguel Cabrera with that type of power. That's the hardest place to hit it out and Chris hits it out with ease." That makes 30 homers this season for Colabello including 24 at Triple-A Rochester where he was named last week as the International League's most valuable player. Of those he estimates 20 have gone to center or right field including all six of his big-league clouts. He also wen...

Chris Colabello exhibited power all season in the minor leagues. Monday, he showed off that strength at the major league level. Colabello homered twice Monday against Houston, including a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the ninth inning -- his first career grand slam -- to give Minnesota its first lead of the game en route to a 10-6, come-from-behind win at Minute Maid Park. Houston Astros Groundskeeper Shakes His Money Maker

Apparently you have to find ways to amuse yourself when the team you are employed by is 45-91 on the season. This Houston Astros groundskeeper may have a future in show-biz if he trades in his rake and takes his side-show to Hollywood.  Hey, who knows maybe the Dodgers are hiring. Regardless the sock dancing keeper should relish in his 2 minutes of fame while it lasts. The post...

Twins wardrobe malfunction averted through quick change

Minnesota Twins left fielder Darin Mastroianni helped out his starting pitcher Tuesday by making a diving catch against Houston. Then a Twins reliever had to return the favor by giving Mastroianni a helping hand -- and a belt. Mastroianni dove to make a catch on a Jose Altuve fly ball to left field for the first out of the fourth inning. There was a problem, though: as Mastroianni...

Alex Presley, Josmil Pinto shine in debut with Twins

The two newest Minnesota Twins make the biggest impact Sunday in their team's 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers. Center fielder Alex Presley and catcher Josmil Pinto both made their Twins debuts -- and for Pinto, his major league debut -- on Sunday, and they combined for five hits and a pair of RBI in Minnesota's victory. It was Pinto, the 24-year-old from Venezuela, who opened...

Rookie Brett Oberholtzer pitched a four-hitter and Jason Castro hit an RBI double in the eighth inning, lifting the Houston Astros to a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. The 24-year-old Oberholtzer struck out five and walked one. He did not allow an extra-base hit in his sixth career start and ninth appearance to lower his ERA to 2.79. He had never pitched more than seven...

Twins seek sweep in Houston

Sweeps for the Minnesota Twins have been few and far between this season, but they've come a little easier against the Houston Astros. The Twins will try to close out an impressive offensive series with another win in Houston on Wednesday. Minnesota (61-76) opened the set with a 10-6 win Monday, tying a season high with four homers including a ninth-inning grand slam courtesy...

Newcomers, Correia lead Twins to 4-2 win at Texas

Alex Presley and Josmil Pinto quickly fit in with Minnesota. Both players enjoyed a memorable debut for the Twins during their series-clinching 4-2 victory over the AL West-leading Texas Rangers on Sunday. Newest Twins stand out in 4-2 win over Rangers

Alex Presley was describing his first day with the Twins after Sunday’s 4-2 victory over the Rangers was enjoying how much his three hits helped eliminate some of that Hello-My-Name-Is awkwardness with his teammates when it was pointed out he had been given the don’t-steal sign before the fifth-inning pitch on which he was yes thrown out stealing. “Oh — that was a no-go...

Twins beat Astros 9-6 in 12 innings

The possibility of Bo Porter leaving Houston for Washington after this season

During the 2012 offseason, the Houston Astros made the choice to go with Washington Nationals coach Bo Porter as the team’s new manager. With the Astros going through a complete rebuilding process and the team joining the previously competitive AL West, the Astros are expected to struggle for the next couple seasons. This year, as expected, they have the worst record in all of...

Rangers drop series to Twins

What a downer weekend of baseball. The Rangers scored just seven runs off the Minnesota Twins in three games.  Seven. They scored more than that in three innings of Felix Hernandez pitching. But that’s exactly why I never look at any series as a gimme.  There are no gimmes in baseball.  Every team will have a good stretch and every team will have a bad stretch. The Rangers are...
