The Minnesota Twins have been all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs for months. And manager Ron Gardenhire thinks his team is playing like it has given up. Minnesota was held to four hits and shutout for the second straight game, while the Tampa Bay Rays protected their wild-card lead by beating the Twins 7-0 in a game delayed 2 hours, 4 minutes by rain. ''Those guys are playing for something over there,'' Gardenhire said. ''They're into the game and we didn't look like we were really getting after it too much. And I guess the weather really bothered us a lot more, which is pretty disappointing.'' Andrew Albers (2-3) allowed four runs in four innings for Minnesota, but was done early because of the lengthy delay. After winning his first two starts, the rookie hasn't won in more than a month. Albers and Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore had to wait through a 7-minute delay to begin the game and didn't get to finish their st...

Twins Friday: Minnesota's manager irked by mounting strikeout totals

MINNEAPOLIS -- The strikeout totals for Minnesota's batters have been alarming. The Twins already set a club record for the most strikeouts in a season, and that number continues to grow. In Friday's 3-0 loss to Tampa Bay, it was the strikeouts Minnesota's hitters simply sat and watched that bothered manager Ron Gardenhire. The Twins struck out 11 times against the...

Josmil Pinto gives Twins fans a reason to cheer

MINNEAPOLIS -- As the Minnesota Twins march toward the end of another losing season, there haven't been too many bright spots to speak of lately. Josmil Pinto, however, has been one of them. The Twins' rookie catcher has already impressed with his bat during his limited time in the major leagues, but he had his biggest hit of his young career Sunday against Tampa Bay. With...

This round's on me: Glen Perkins hooks up Twins fans

MINNEAPOLIS -- The rain delay at Target Field on Saturday night lasted exactly two hours and four minutes. Plenty of time for the Twins' closer to express his gratitude toward a group of fans for riding it out. At some point during a respite that drove many fans away from an already-thin contingent -- Minnesota trailed 4-0 after 3 innings when the tarps first came out -- Glen...

Twins score 4 in 8th to rally past Tampa Bay 6-4

Josmil Pinto is a "hungry" ballplayer manager Ron Gardenhire said Sunday someone who is "really interested" in showing the Twins he deserves a spot on the 2014 roster. He makes a pretty convincing case. Pinto launched a three-run home run into the Tampa Bay bullpen in the bottom of the eighth inning Sunday rallying the Twins past the playoff-contending Rays...

End of Season Post-Mortem: 2013 Minnesota Twins

Here we are, folks: the End of Season Post-Mortem series. Twins endure 'long night' in another shutout loss to Rays

MINNEAPOLIS -- By the end, the individual boos and catcalls from the few souls left inside Target Field could be heard plainly. Not that the Twins needed any more audible reminders of their struggles against the Rays. And at home. And in 2013. Tampa Bay continued to cruise against Minnesota, shutting out the Twins for the second night in a row with a 7-0, rain-delayed shellacking...

Correia, Twins blanked 3-0 by Archer, Rays

Adding Kevin Correia was not the kind of offseason move that caused a buzz around baseball or made Minnesota Twins fans buy a bunch of tickets. The veteran has given the Twins good value, though. Imagine their rotation without the right-hander. Chris Archer pitched six innings, and the Tampa Bay Rays added to their slim wild-card lead by beating Correia and the Twins 3-0 on Friday...

Twins starting pitching still a question going into 2014

Entering the 2013 season, the biggest question mark for the Minnesota Twins was starting pitching. One offseason later, that may once again be the main area of concern for general manager Terry Ryan and his staff. Ryan signed a pair of free agent veterans last winter in Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey, and also traded away outfielder Ben Revere in exchange for two more pitchers. One...
