UConn is 7-0 in the national championship game, and will go for No. 8 on Tuesday night. Score: No. 1 UConn 83, No. 1 Notre Dame 65 Stars: UConn: Breanna Stewart 29 Pts, 5 Reb, 4 Blk. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis 16 Pts, 6 Reb, 3 Stl. Notre Dame: Kayla McBride 16 Pts, 6 Reb, 2 Ast. Story: Three times this season. Seven out of the last eight times overall. Two straight years in the Final Four. Lately, the celebrated UConn-Notre Dame rivalry has been all Irish. Not anymore. UConn took control of a back-and-forth game late in the second half to beat Notre Dame 83-65, setting up a rematch of the 2009 national championship game against the Louisville Cardinals in Tuesday’s title game. The Huskies will be playing for their eighth national championship. UConn has never lost in the national championship game. Freshman Breanna Stewart has improved with every game this season, and has especially emerged in the postseason. Stewart led the charge with a career-high 29 points, as well as five rebounds and four blocks. In total, the Huskies blocked an NCAA Tournament record 12 shots, led by five from junior Stefanie Dolson. Notre Dame senior Skylar Diggins, considered by many to be one of the greatest women’s basketball players in recent memory, was virtually nonexistent during the game. The South Bend native was 3-15 from the floor, and only reached 10 points because she was 4-4 from the foul line. Kayla McBride once again was the leader for the Irish, finishing with 16 points in 38 minutes. UConn will play Louisville on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. E.T. for the national championship. The Cardinals are the Cinderella of the 2013 tournament, having defeated Baylor and Tennessee to reach the Final Four before overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat Cal on Sunday night. Louisville is playing in its second title game. They lost to UConn 76-54 in the 2009 championship game. Congrats to the uconn women for pulling off a huge W. next stop the ship. Bring it back home to where it belongs #huskynation — Matt Barnes (@mattbarnesRHP) April 8, 2013 Congrats to Geno Auriemma as UConn won. It was a great year for @skydigg4 and Muffet McGraw. — Dick Vitale (@DickieV) April 8, 2013 Man, I haven’t heard UConn cheering like that over the ND fight song SINCE UCONN BEAT NOTRE DAME AT FOOTBALL. THAT WAS A THING THAT HAPPENED — TheUConnBlog (@theuconnblog) April 8, 2013 Everybody thinking the same thing – Thank god we don’t have to play #Baylor.#UConn — Hugh Jasoll (@uconncrazy) April 8, 2013 It’s great being a UConn fan; it’s like being a fan of Ansonia football except the Huskies don’t win that much. — Peter F. Burns (@PeterFBurns) April 8, 2013 Welcome to UConn: Women’s basketball capital of the world. #ilovemyschool #EyesOn8 — Maddie Love (@maddzlove) April 8, 2013 I LOVE GENO AURIEMMA AND I LOVE UCONN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL. LET’S GET IT DONE TUESDAY NIGHT! — Mike Sivo (@sivbro23) April 8, 2013 @tim_fontenault @m_stypulkoski I jumped on the UConn women’s bball team bandwagon tonight. Thank you for winning — Nate Jacobson (@natejacobson1) April 8, 2013 Notre Dame finishes the season 3-1 against UConn, a fact that Irish fans will never, ever get to brag about. — Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) April 8, 2013
