TarHeelBlog.com continues looking at the UNC basketball roster as they prepare for the season. Tonight, they look at James Michael McAdoo, a big man that will play a big role for the Tar Heels.
Vitals
Number: 43
Position: Power Forward
Height: 6-9
Weight: 230 lbs
Year: Sophomore
2011-12 and Career Stats: 36 gms, 3.9 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 44.0 FG%
What Happened Last Season
James Michael McAdoo was Carolina's sixth man last season, playing behind Tyler Zeller and John Henson and stepping up after Henson was injured in the postseason. McAdoo shined in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments, shooting over 50% from the floor and averaging nearly 11 points and 6 rebounds per game in the last seven games.
Outlook For This Season
There will be no flying under the radar for McAdoo this season. He enters 2013 as a preseason All-ACC selection after earning his chops down the stretch last season. McAdoo is athletic, and rebounds and runs the floor well. He was impressive last season in jumping the passing lanes and this season if his offensive skills continue to develop, he has the opportunity to be among the ACC's elite players.
Main Concern
McAdoo had the luxury last season of playing behind the ACC Player of the Year in Tyler Zeller and a very unique post player in John Henson, both of whom are playing in the NBA now. Carolina's frontcourt is very thin and McAdoo will be the go-to-guy down low. He certainly has the talent, but how will he respond when all the attention is on him?
Wish List
15.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 55.0 FG%, 70.0 FT%
Carolina has had the luxury of a stable of big men for the most of past decade, but this year will be a little uncharacteristic given the youth and inexperience of the bigs. The post players are talented and athletic but raw and green, especially given that a sophomore like McAdoo is the veteran of the bunch. It will be interesting to see the flow of the offense, which usually operates inside-to-outside. One of the young post players will have to step up or McAdoo will see a ton of double-teams. JMM showed flashes at the end of last season of the special player he can be - now is the time for him to take on a leadership role and deliver near the basket.
