UTEP head football coach Mike Price has decided to retire from coaching. Mike Price
He made the decision with one game left in their season, as the Miners are just 3-8 this season. This is his 9th season at UTEP.
In his first two seasons, he guided UTEP to 8-4 records and to bowl games, but has struggled to have a winning record since.
He has a 177-182 overall record with his final game on Saturday against Rice at home. At the moment, he is the sixth winningest active coach in FBS.
“I’m retiring from the game I’ve loved my entire life,” Price said at a campus news conference.
The team hopes to have a new coach in place by Christmas. Athletic Director Bob Stull will consider defensive coordinator Andre Patterson as the next head coach.
Price’s son, Aaron Price, who is the UTEP offensive coordinator, has endorsed Patterson for the job.
“I think we’ve got things in place to be very competitive,” Stull said. “We need to keep some continuity in what we’re doing.”
