Jack Beckman, 2012 NHRA Funny Car world champion was presented a custom Al Merrick surfboard from sponsor Valvoline. The board was given to Beckman at the Auto Club Raceway during a recent NHRA race.
It was quite the reward for the 46-year old avid surfer, who would be doing that full-time if not for his need for speed. “You know what, I’m 46 now and I don’t get a lot of presents and I don’t get wound up and excited for stuff, but that is one of the coolest damn things I’ve ever gotten in my life,” said Beckman during the presentation.
It was a truly unique gift from a unique company. Beckman’s title last year along with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.’s NASCAR Nationwide Series title underscores the performance that can be attained by switching to Valvoline NextGen motor oil. Valvoline NextGen is Valvoline’s eco-friendly motor oil that takes 50% recycled motor oil with new motor oil. It might be 50% recycled, but it is 100% Valvoline performance as shown by both drivers.
For Beckman, he was very pleased with the combination of both his passions. “I didn’t know what to say. Of the two things I love to do – race cars and surf – Valvoline combined the two. It was such a thoughtful gift and I’m going to use it until it breaks in half.” He continued, “I’d be on it Monday if we weren’t racing in Phoenix next week.”
I can only imagine what they have in store for Stenhouse or if teammates Carl Edwards or Greg Biffle can win the Sprint Cup Series title in 2013. Below is a photo of Beckman and his new board, courtesy of Valvoline.
