Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright hadn’t won a game for nearly a month. But he still is tied for the National League in wins at 14 after a dominant seven-inning 11-strikeout performance against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Wainwright winless in four starts since July 21 was the staff ace he had been for much of the season raising his record to 14-7 and his mark at Wrigley Field to 6-0 in a 6-1 victory in the rubber game of the three-game series. "That was as good as he’s been all season" said manager Mike Matheny. "His curveball was as sharp as we’ve seen it. "He went through a little lull but today it looked like the normal Wainwright." Jon Jay provided most of the offense driving in four runs including three on a home run off lefthander James Russell in the seventh inning. Russell had held lefthanded batters to a .181 average without a home run this year. The lefthanded-hitting Jay had been hitting .198 against southpaws. Matt Carpenter singled in the other two Cardinals’ runs in the third inning. Yadier Molina had two doubles giving him four extra-base hits over the last two games the first time he had played two in succession since coming off the disabled list on Thursday. Molina has played three games since exiting the DL. The Cardinals have won all three. Lefthander Kevin Siegrist pitched a scoreless eighth for the Cardinals helped by left fielder Matt Holliday throwing out David DeJesus trying to score on a medium-range fly ball that Holliday caught off the bat of Anthony Rizzo. After Siegrist fanned Nate Schierholtz to open the ninth Trevor Rosenthal wrapped up the win walking two and striking out one. Cardinals pitchers fanned 14 for the game. The Cardinals moved to one game behind first-place Pittsburgh in the National League Central Division with the Pirates losing in 16 innings to Arizona 4-2.
