Longtime NBA assistant Michael Malone could get his first shot as a head coach, as the Golden State Warriors have given the Charlotte Bobcats permission to interview their assistant coach for the team's vacant head coaching position.

Malone has been in the NBA since 2001, when he was hired as a coaching associate with the Knicks. He was promoted to assistant coach in May 2003. After four seasons in New York, Malone moved on to Cleveland, where he spent five seasons as an assistant with the Cavaliers, including the team's Eastern Conference championship season in 2007.

Malone was hired in Golden State after spending one year in New Orleans. The Warriors were 23-43 this past season under head coach Mark Jackson, finishing fourth in the Pacific Division.

Charlotte has been without a coach for a week, since announcing that former head coach Paul Silas would not get a new contract. The Bobcats, who finished the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season with the worst winning percentage in NBA history, promised Silas a job in the organization, but will be looking for a new coach to inject life into the franchise, which has made just one trip to the playoffs since it began play in 2004.

Former Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan has also been mentioned in connection with the Bobcats job.
