While We’re Waiting is the daily morning link roundup that WFNY has been serving up for breakfast for the last several years. We hope you enjoy the following recent collection of yummy and nutritious Cleveland sports-related articles. Anything else to add? Email us at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. Is another change of scenery enough for the All-Star center to turn his career around? “Andrew Bynum smiled and spoke confidently. That’s probably more than Bynum did last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, and for the Cleveland Cavaliers, it’s a pretty good start.” [Sam Amico/FOX Sports Ohio] – Reports from every MLB division, including what the second half has in store for the AL Central: “Until — or unless — those mercurial Royals, currently eight games back, get some consistency on the offensive end (and don’t rule it out), the Central is, at the moment, essentially a two-team race between the Tigers and Indians. The fact that it’s a race at all qualifies as a surprise, because few would dispute that the Tigers, the defending AL champs, have the most talent in the division.” [Anthony Castrovince/MLB.com] – It was a wild-and-wacky Indians first-half, and here was one writer’s worst moment: “The Boston massacre: Tito’s first trip back to Boston was memorable, mostly in the forgettable fashion. Francona’s Indians, who were swept by the Red Sox in a three-game series in Cleveland (April 16-18), took the first game of the four-game set at Fenway Park (May 23-26), then got spanked 8-1 before losing the final two games in unimaginable ways. To make matters worse, Perez is injured in the series finale and heads to the disabled list.” [Chris Assenheimer/The Chronicle-Telegram] – At least there was good draft news for the Tribe recently: “The competitive balance lottery happened on Wednesday to no fanfare at all, but Indians fans should really be happy about it and need to know about it. The reason is simple: this pick becomes a big trade asset for the Indians. It could be the centerpiece in a trade, especially if it’s for pen help.” [Jeff Ellis/Indians Baseball Insider] – Tough story on a recent Indians draft pick: “It was supposed to be the most important season of Matt Whitehouse’s college career at UC Irvine, but in trying to return from a knee injury he overworked himself, causing tendonitis in his rotator cuff and thus washing out his entire junior campaign. Wisely, the left-hander used his time away from the mound to reset his path, focusing on becoming stronger both physically and mentally.” [Craig Forde/MLB.com] – Making the case for the pistol offense for the 2013 Browns: “When you consider that the Browns’ two first round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft were used on an extremely talented running back in Trent Richardson and a confident, big armed quarterback in Brandon Weeden, the pairing of Chudzinski and Turner looks to be a great fit. However, if these two coaches wish to get the most out of their talented tandem, it may take some creativity.” [Brendan Leister/DraftBrowns.com] – A look at an intriguing summer league player for the Cavs: “Twenty-five year-old rookies straight out of the NCAA aren’t common in the NBA. But with Bernard James and Vernon Macklin having been drafted each of the last two seasons, there appears to be room for someone like Kenny Kadji to make his mark. Kadji’s skill set is thoroughly tantalizing. Athletic, 6’11″ power forwards that can potentially shoot threes don’t grow on trees. Kadji shot 37% on three point attempts in his two years at Miami, along with averaging 12.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. He’s a versatile player, to be certain.” [Sam Vecenie/Fear The Sword] – How do NBA Summer League stats translate into the regular season? “To assess the predictive value of summer-league statistics more thoroughly, I compiled last season’s numbers for players who participated in both NBA summer leagues, then compared them to how those same players played during the 2012-13 regular season. The results confirm some assumptions about summer-league stats, but discredit others.” [Kevin Pelton/ESPN Insider] – Looking at why Deshaun Thomas will be a big NBA surprise in his rookie season: “Don’t believe me? Look at the numbers. Deshaun got more buckets per game last year than anyone not named Isaiah Canaan in this year’s NBA draft. Deshaun was a top 20 NCAA D1 scorer last year and increased his ppg by nearly 5 points from his sophomore to junior season.” [Jake Watts/O-H-I-OWE] – Finally, enjoy these rare photos of Indians’ legend Larry Doby, via Sporting News.
