“While We’re Waiting” serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email attips@waitingfornextyear.com. “Totally did not see this coming. I knew that Terry Francona knew what he was doing. I knew he had a knack for getting the most out of his players because he supports them, backs them and goes to great measures to understand them. But I also knew that those Boston clubs in 2004 and 2007 – heck, even 2011 – had a lot more established talent than this 2013 Tribe club. I didn’t know Francona would be such an expert tactician with a versatile bench, and I didn’t know his optimism and excitement about being here would prove so unshakable even in the season’s darkest days. I didn’t know he’d put together what is arguably the greatest managerial job of his career, World Series or not.” [Castrovince/MLB.com] —- “The Browns defense is for real. The defensive front, specifically, is playing a relentless, suffocating brand of football and a young and thin secondary is doing the job. No one back there — and maybe no cornerback anywhere — is doing a better job than Joe Haden, who in his fourth year has been as advertised as a more mature, more polished player and is locking down opposing receivers. The Browns defense is setting the tone early in games and in Haden and Barkevious Mingo, it has at least a couple rising stars to go with a bunch of guys who are doing their jobs and doing them well.” [Jackson/FSO] —- “Whether a success on the part of the Browns or a failure on the part of the Bengals, it is surprising the tight ends of the Bengals were not able to do more. They combined for 6 catches on 10 targets for 92 yards. This was a huge mismatch coming into the game and one that perhaps could have been exploited more than it was. The run defense was again extremely strong, holding the Bengals to 63 yards on 20 carries. 4 of those carries and 13 of the yards were from Dalton on scrambles and a fourth down sneak, so the actual running backs for the Bengals were only able to 50 yards on 16 carries. Putting Dalton in obvious pass situations and giving their defense that advantage was a huge part of their success.” [Smith/Dawg Pound Daily] —- “Antonetti’s remade roster that features just 10 players from the 2011 Opening Day roster will host the American League Wild Card game Wednesday night at Progressive Field as the hottest team in Major League Baseball riding a 10 game winning streak. Several of his new additions and homegrown, developed players helped provide the necessary offense to send the Indians back to October.” [Brandyberry/DTTWLN] —- Finally, a press box announcement led to my favorite tweet of the weekend.
