Juan Lagares had a great game on Monday, as he came up with two hits and made two outstanding defensive plays in the Mets’ 6-1 win over the Twins. The game was a good illustration of the pros and cons for Lagares. While he had two hits, neither left the infield and one he would have been thrown out at first if the ball did not get literally stuck in the webbing of the infielder’s glove, making a throw impossible. Lagares had two great catches but the announcers made it seem like he had four. We all want Lagares to be a star and to hold down center field for the next decade or more. But on our way to anointing him to the All-Star team, let’s take a second to try and objectively look at his performance. It’s been said that you’re never as good as you look in your hot streaks and never as bad as you look in your slumps. Lagares has given us evidence of both hot and cold here in his rookie season.
