Baseball America is reporting that the Diamondbacks have released left-handed reliever Ron Mahay. The veteran has been getting lit up at Triple A Reno (9.58 ERA in 10.1 IP) after Arizona signed him to a minor league deal last month. The Red Sox could be interested in Mahay to help solve the lack of left-handed depth in their bullpen. According to MLB Trade Rumors, the 39-year-old “appeared in 41 games for the Twins last year and posted a 3.44 ERA with a 42.5% ground ball rate, 6.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9.” Left-handed batters hit just .219 against him with only two walks and 12 strikeouts in just over 17 innings in 2010. The Sox could sign Mahay as insurance for fellow left-hander Rich Hill, who’s made three scoreless appearances since being called up from Pawtucket.
