I recently wrote about how the Rays are the smartest team in baseball but this week I almost wrote another post criticizing them for being profoundly dumb. The Rays signed first basemen James Loney for $2million to be their starting first basemen. Believe it or not, that’s an overpay. James Loney might be the worst starting first basemen in baseball. By a lot. Arguably the best part of the Dodgers’ trade with the Red Sox last summer was that they were able to dump Loney (not really, but go with it). Sabermatricians estimate that fair market value is $5 million per full point of WAR and last year Loney’s WAR was -.3. So, really, he should be paying the Rays to play for them, not the other way around. You’re telling me that the Rays don’t have a guy in the minors who can be a replacement level player in the pros? You’re telling me they can’t find anyone better than Loney who will play for less than $2mill? Terrible contract for a bad player.
On the other hand, the Rays picked up homop...

Rays finalize deal with 1B James Loney
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Free agent first baseman James Loney and the Tampa Bay Rays completed their 2 million, 1-year contract Thursday.
The sides agreed on the deal earlier this week at the baseball winter meetings, pending a physical. Loney can make an additional 1 million in performance bonuses.
Tampa Bay is hoping the 28-year-old Loney can have a bounce-back year. He started...
Rays Pull Off Inevitable Yunel Escobar Acquisition
It might not be fair to say the Tampa Bay Rays don’t care about player makeup concerns. You could conceivably come up with a hypothetical talented player so awful the Rays wouldn’t take a chance. Based on precedent and indications, it might be fair to say the Rays care the least about player makeup concerns of any team in the league. Almost by necessity, if you figure the Rays...

Dodgers should target James Shields, no matter what happens with Greinke
Someone who is -- and isn't -- getting a lot of coverage during these Winter Meetings is James Shields. He was once reported to be the Dodgers' No. 1 trade target, yet they haven't been linked that closely with him this week.
But the Dodgers should attempt to acquire him -- even if they do sign Zack Greinke.
Shields, 31 in 15 days, is a legitimate No. 2 or No...
Rays, Marlins go conservative in Nashville
The Miami Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays both made big news leading up to this years winter meetings and figure to keep tinkering with their rosters after departing Nashville, Tenn.
During the actual meetings four days that included many rumors but relatively little action the two Florida teams helped each other: The Rays filled a need while alleviating the Marlins of a potential...
Jeff Keppinger gets a three-year deal from the White Sox
Do you want proof that the infield class on this free agent market is week? A day after Marco Scutaro got $20 million over three years from the Giants, former Rays utilityman Jeff Keppinger received a three year, $12 million deal from the Chicago White Sox.
Keppinger had a fine 2012 for the Rays in limited duty, amassing 2.8 fWAR in 418 plate appearances with an .806 OPS, playing...
Rays make James Loney signing official
The Rays announced the official signing of first baseman free agent James Loney on Thursday. The deal is for one year, valued at $2 million with the potential of an additional $1 million based on his performance.
