Xolos earned an important 2-1 victory in the first leg of the Liga MX championship series. The Estadio Caliente was jam-packed, and the crowd made itself heard throughout the match. The two teams played the roles we had expected, Toluca fell back and counterattacked, while Xolos attacked while maintaining a strong midfield.
Xolos dominated posession for most of the match, and were able to score two goals. Toluca had very few attacking opportunities, but they took advantage of them, scoring a key goal that keeps them very close to Xolos.
There is no away goal rules in the championship phase of the Liga MX liguilla. This means that Xolos would win the championship, if they win or draw at the Estadio Nemesio Diez this Sunday. Toluca must win, a 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, etc. win would force the game into overtime and penalties if necessary. A 2+ goal difference victory would give the championship outright to Toluca.
