Right-hander Phil Hughes rejoined the Yankees' rotation on Thursday night. But if things had turned out differently, the start might have gone to Nationals right-hander Dan Haren. The Yankees and Nationals talked about a trade involving Haren last weekend but never got close to a deal, major league sources tell FOX Sports. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman declined to confirm the Haren discussions on Thursday, but he did not deny that the team has continued to seek upgrades. "We haven't stopped trying to improve," Cashman said. "We've always been open to different things, pursuing different things. It started all the way back in March, when all the injuries hit." Late Tuesday night, the Yankees obtained shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Mariners for a player to be named. Ryan, because he was acquired after Sept. 1, is not eligible for the Yankees' postseason roster. Haren would not have been, either. The Yankees' interest in Haren appar...

Yankees: Hughes starting tonight is a joke

After beating Buck’s Birds for the second night in a row 5-4, plus some key losses, the New York Yankees have propelled themselves to one behind the Phil Hughes pitching on April 18, 2008 against the Baltimore Orioles (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Tampa Bay Rays in the Wild Card standings. Tonight, at Camden Yard, is the last time the Yankees will play the Baltimore Orioles both in...

Just When You Thought It Was Safe To...Phil Hughes Starting Again For Yankees

After the final Major League pitch was thrown last night, the Yankees were looking at only the Tampa Bay Rays as the ones keeping them out of the playoffs.  Just one game separates the Yankees from a trip to October Baseball. Well, a trip to a one-game playoff, anyway. However, don't get too excited, kiddies.  In tonight's series finale against the Orioles, the Yankees...

Haren, Zimmerman, Nats top Mets for 5th win in row

Dan Haren pitched one-hit ball for six innings, Ryan Zimmerman homered and the Washington Nationals won their fifth straight game, beating the New York Mets 3-0 on Wednesday in a night full of 9/11 tributes. Mets manager Terry Collins wore an NYPD hat during batting practice, and there were several remembrances on the field, on the scoreboard and over the public-address system of...

Ryan Zimmerman, Dan Haren lift Washington to 3-0 win over Mets

For years Ryan Zimmerman never needed to overcome a baseball season. He drew comparisons to Brooks Robinson clobbered around 25 homers a year and earned a $100 million contract. He had nothing to endure. He existed easily in a hard game until this season. His throwing mechanics broke down his bat lost power and his confidence eroded. He wondered at one point if he may need to switch...

Preview: Yankees @ Orioles (9/12/13)

In a pivotal, must win game for the Yanks, Phil Hughes (4-13, 5.11 ERA) is on the mound for some reason taking on Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.82 ERA.) Hughes did not win back his spot in the Yankees rotation. He did not dazzle in relief. He did nothing to earn a start. David Huff gave the spot away with a dreadful outing last Saturday. Joe Girardi decided on Wednesday that one start from...

Rumors: Yankees, Nationals discussed Dan Haren trade

With their starting pitchers struggling and battling injuries, the Yankees were in the market for a starting pitcher. Phil Hughes was struggling and a poor outing by left-handed pitcher David Huff really amped up the Yankees' pursuit for a starter. The Yankees were calling teams and targeted one specific starting pitcher. The Yankees and Nationals discussed a deal that would...

The Yankees will try to win the series tonight from Baltimore as Phil Hughes takes the mound for his first start since September 2. Coming into play today, the Yankees find themselves just one game behind the Rays for the second Wild Card spot. After tonight, New York will head to Boston for what should be a tough weekend series at Fenway. Check out a full preview of tonight’s...

Current Hughes, Joba Situations are not Unique

Much has been made of late surrounding the struggles of Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain and whether we are seeing the last of them in a Yankee uniform. With both performing below expectations and about to enter free agency, one has to believe neither will be wearing pinstripes come 2014. Many people, myself included, have been riding the Yankees hard for their seeming inability...
