Some Olympians have big sponsorship deals with Gillette or Subway.

Others have to find more, um, creative ways to raise money to pay for training, travel, and living expenses.

Take New Zealand taekwondo fighter Logan Campbell.

He found himself out $120,000 (American dollars) after the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and was going to need another $200,000 to compete in London.

Instead of holding the bake sale to end all bake sales or working as an extra on The Hobbit movie/trilogy (first New Zealand-specific job I thought of), he opened a brothel.

Brothels are legal in New Zealand. Still, when Campbell opened his establishment in 2009, the New Zealand Olympic Committee wasn’t happy.

But news of Campbell’s business endeavors spread, and the Kiwis responded by donating large sums of money to the country’s taekwondo program. No longer in need of funding, Campbell sold the brothel in 2011.

Now he’s in London, awaiting the start of the men’s 68 kg tournament next Wednesday.

Campbell’s Wikipedia page says that The Karate Kid inspired him to take up taekwondo. To my knowledge, Ralph Macchio never operated a brothel.
