Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. His teammates played a game against the Yankees Sunday night that ended well past midnight. They staggered home after a loss, caught a few hours of sleep, then flew here in the morning. Jon Lester was afforded the luxury of flying ahead of the team so he could get a full night of rest before facing the Giants Monday night. It worked out well for the lefthander. He pitched one of his best games of the season, taking a shutout into the ninth inning as the Red Sox beat the Giants, 7-0, before a crowd of 41,585 at AT&T Park. With Tampa Bay beating Baltimore, 4-3, the Red Sox maintained a one-game lead in the American League East. Lester (11-7) scattered six hits, walked two, and struck out three. He threw 115 pitches. Globe: Jon Lester, Red Sox blank Giants Lester finally served as the stopper last night and it really couldn't have been better timing. Following an emotional, late game versus the Yankees on Sunday night, the rest of the team had to fly out of Boston at 7:00 a.m. yesterday morning across the country to San Francisco. Lester, who had already flown in ahead of time, picked his team up. His line: 8.1 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K on 115 pitches. The offense was electric as well, posting five runs against the Giants' Tim Lincecum, seven total. Sure Lincecum is pretty screwed up right now, but you never know with this guy. What's more important is that Tampa won last night, so the Sox maintained their one-game lead atop the AL East. Lester was the Sox ace and stopper last night; something this team has been searching for all season. If Lester has finally flipped the switch, the Red Sox are going far in the playoffs.
