During the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Kauffman Stadium yesterday afternoon, New York Mets top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler dazzled those in attendance according to ESPN’s Steve Berthiaume:

MLB talent evaluator told me Futures Game pitcher who looked most big league ready was #Mets Zack @Wheelerpro45 Sorry #SFGiants fans. about 2 hours ago via Twitter for AndroidReplyRetweetFavorite @SBerthiaumeESPN Steve Berthiaume

According to David Lennon of Newsday, Wheeler made quick work of the only two batters he faced, dialing it up to 98 mph:

Wheeler faced Indians’ Jesus Aguilar: 98-mph fastball for called strike, 88 slider for swinging strike, 80 changeup pop to CF. #mets about 13 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @DPLennon David Lennon

Wheeler got one more batter in the 9th. Retired Twins’ Oswaldo Arcia on four pitches: 95-97-90-97. Groundout to third. #mets about 13 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @DPLennon David Lennon

Following the game, Wheeler tweeted the following about his experience:

I want to thank everybody for the support today. It was a lot of fun. about 11 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @Wheelerpro45 Zack wheeler

According to Lennon, his recent two-start stumble — 17 hits, 11 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings — taught him a valuable lesson:

“Sometimes you can get away with throwing hard and missing your spots,” Wheeler said, according to Lennon. “But in those games, I was missing my spots and they were hitting me. That reminded me of what would happen if I was in the big leagues. It was a good learning experience, so actually I’m glad it happened.”

According to Anthony DiComo of Mets.com, Wheeler realizes there are high expectations of him.

“I see it,” Wheeler said of those expectations, according to DiComo “but it’s not going to bother me any. It’s not going to make my head bigger, or it’s not going to be a downer if I get moved down. I’m out there to pitch.”

No doubt Wheeler has been great thus far, striking out 88 batters over 92 2/3 innings pitched while pitching to a 2.62 ERA:

For now the plan seems to be to let Wheeler develop a bit more at Binghamton and he may see some time at Triple-A Buffalo sooner rather than later. As Adam Rubin of ESPN New York tweeted, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson stated he would like to see a couple more dominate performances in Double-A before moving him to Triple-A:

Did say he would like to see Zack Wheeler “dominate” in a couple more AA starts before moving him to AAA, but promotion soon. about 19 hours ago via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite @AdamRubinESPN Adam Rubin

The Mets starters are pitching so well that there’ s just no need for them to rush anyone at any level but Zack’s got a lot of fans excited about what he can do for t his staff in the not-so-distant future.
