The Braves lead the Mets by 17.5 games in the NL East and own the best record in baseball but Zack Wheeler hasn’t given them an inch. The young righthander earned the win in a 5-3 Mets victory over Atlanta on Tuesday at Citi Field and improved to 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in three tries against the first place Braves this season. Overall he is 6-2 with a 3.49 ERA. “I feel pretty comfortable against them. It’s really no bash on them but it’s an easy game plan” said Wheeler the only pitcher in the league with three wins against the Braves. After cruising through his first six innings of work Wheeler ran into trouble in the seventh when he allowed a two-out double to Paul Janish. Back-to-back walks followed to load the bases resulting in Wheeler’s exit after 114 pitches his 4-0 lead still intact. Unfortunately Carlos Torres couldn’t help in relief quickly surrendering a three-run double to Andrelton Simmons. All three runs were charged to Wheeler nearly costing the starter a decision as the Braves pulled within 4-3. “I’m pretty mad about that last inning” Wheeler said. “I sort of let it get away from me. It sucks.” Said Terry Collins: “My whole career I’ve always loved a player when a game is over who comes in and is genuinely upset that I either took him out of the game or I pinch hit for him or something else. I love those guys. Zack Wheeler on the mound I wasn’t sure he was going to give me the ball. That’s what I love about the days he pitches: he competes.”
