Vernon Gholston: Bust or Beast?

Vernon Gholston spends a few minutes with the Yard. In this exclusive video he talks about his versatility, his similarities to San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman and fellow draft prospect Chris Long, and he also breaks down the differences between the 4-3 and 3-4 defenses.

Vernon could be the first DE off the board, maybe even the next player off the board regardless of position. Or he could be the third DE off the board (behind Long and Derrick Harvey from Florida) and drop out of the top 10. Either way he is a definite first-round guy, regardless of what specific scouts may think of him: " Vernon Gholston is going to be a bust. He doesn't play hard every play. He's not a great pass rusher. If you look at defensive ends, that's a risky pick. He has great numbers but I don't see that athleticism on the field. He does't play to his speed time. Gholston is a good kid but if you watch tape, he doesn't dominate."

It's tough to say. He was an absolute freak at the combine but that's not on the playing field. I wanted this guy so bad in a Patriots uniform but this isn't the first bad ink on Vernon being a bust. He seems llike a great kid but there is some doubt. Thanks for the info.

Nothing like seeing a future Patriot.

Quite possibly this years "Mike Mamula"

Nice comparison. At least I hope so. I really thought Mamula was the real deal. How could he not be a great player with that strength? Maybe I'll stick to my regular job.

Talented player, but it remains to be see whether he will be a stud in the NFL. I like his attitude and drive, but he kind of flattened out in the LSU game.

I don't think he has the Attitude and Drive you may think. How can he have such good attitude and drive if he takes plays off? I heard comments on him today that said he takes entire games off. Sounds like he has a poor attitude and lack of drive. Maybe a guy that thinks he's so talented he doesn't have to play hard every play. Can't wait to see the first time some on welcomes him to the NFL. He'll find out, it ain't sweet like that.

You do have a point there. Like I said, he kind of disappeared in the most important game of the year. Obviously, someone thinks he is going to do something if he is going to be in the top 5 players picked. That doesn't guarantee anything, for sure. Good point.

He's a physical beast but he takes some plays off

What if he takes off some plays?

GunShip.............

He is a freak!!!! Just look at him. I think he is going to be a force... Defensive rookie of the year.

Dorsey will be a solid player at NFL level, probably go to a few Pro Bowls too. Good luck to him.

I think Dorsey could be the second player taken today behind long. Dorsey doesn't let up the whole game.

Yup. As an LSU fan I sure never saw him take time out, certainly not entire games. If he looked a little off the pace on a few plays you gotta remember he played most of the season while injured and still brought his 'A' game. Sure would've loved seeing him in a Dolphins uniform ;-)

Agreed. LSU linemen usually do well in the NFL. I"d sure take him over Gholston. Gholston may be a pure speed rusher, but Dorsey can collapse your whole interior offensive line and create havoc.

BEAST!

i just hope the Raiders get him... So the jets can get DMC...

As a Ohio State alum, I'm biased; however, I believe that Big Vern is an excellent draft pick for the Jets. Just remember, he's only played football for 6 years...so his "upside" is huge and Jets' fans/coaches will be amazed by his work ethic!

There has been question about him taking plays off, but I guess we'll find out soon. He has great potential, no doubt about it.
