Vikings Notes: “Another Player Busted With Weed” Edition
*Another day, another Viking busted for marijuana possession:
Minnesota Vikings defensive end Darrion Scott has been cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession.
The officers noticed the odor of marijuana and asked for permission to search Scott’s vehicle. Scott refused and a drug dog was brought in. The dog indicated an illegal substance allegedly was in the vehicle and the officers then searched it. They found a small bowl containing 7.1 grams of marijuana.
The best part of the story:
“He asked the officers, ‘Don’t you know who I am?’” Carpenter said. “They cut him a break by not placing him in handcuffs.”
That’s classic–”Don’t you know who I am?” Closed-circuit to Darrion: You’re not exactly a household name.
So there you have it…yet another warning for Vikings players that it ain’t a good idea to have weed in your car. I’d also like to know what the over/under is on amount of days until another Viking gets busted with pot. Culture of accountability, baby!
I said this when Dwight got busted–it’s just plain stupidity. I don’t even think marijuana should be illegal, but that’s irrelevant…what’s important is that possession of marijuana is illegal, and therefore, it is stupid to have some in your car.
And if you do decide to have some pot in your car, at least drive well–Darrion, next time you buy some weed, make sure to signal your lane changes. Just some advice.
“Don’t you know who I am?” Man, what a moron. But to Darrion’s credit, the front office didn’t sign him for his brains.
*Interesting question from Paul Allen…if the Vikings finish the season 9-7 but miss the playoffs, is the season a success or failure?
I’d love to hear some comments on this question. Here’s my opinion–since my preseason prediction was a 7-9 record for this team, I’d have to consider a 9-7 season a success. The Vikings have surpassed my (and most other peoples’) expectations, and the team deserves credit for that.
However, just because they beat expectations doesn’t exactly mean this season is anything to celebrate. Needless to say, it’s a major disappointment to be on the cusp of a playoff berth and have it slip away…this team controlled their own destiny, and they blew it. If they do indeed miss the playoffs, the Vikings’ 2007 season will be remembered for their meltdown against the ‘Skins.
On the other hand, though, this season gives the Vikings an opportunity to improve and get over the hump next season. Give me a quarterback, improve the receiving corps and pass rush, and the Vikings would be a solid playoff team–a team that would make some major noise in the NFC, without doubt. This season made the Vikings relevant again, and there are definitely exciting possibilities for 2008.
So, to kinda summarize my response to that question–I’d consider the season a decent success because it surpassed expectations and since it gives this organization an opportunity to make a run in 2008, but this season will ultimately be remembered for the hugely disappointing finish.
That is, if Washington wins and the Vikings lose.
Again, I’d love to hear what you guys think about that question, and I’ll be back tomorrow with more updates.
(all right, I lied about that last part…I’ve been engrossed in Madden 08 today–an extremely addicting game…I absolutely, 100% promise I’ll post some pregame notes tomorrow)

At the beginning of the season the Vikes were ranked (by the experts) 30th, 31st, 28th - not very high. Nobody expected the Vikings to do much of anything with the QB and WR corps that we had going into the season. We’ve surpassed many of those expectations by winning 8 games so far this season when we were expected to win only half that. So, in that sense I’d say we’ve had a successful season.
We also have more wins than last season. Besides winning the Superbowl, the goal of each season is to improve on what you did in the last. We’ve shown improvement in our running game with the addition of Rookie of the Year Adrian Peterson. We’ve added an improved pass rush with better play from Ray Edwards and rookie Brian Robison. E.J. Henderson has had an outstanding year at middle linebacker along with the always impressive play of Pat & Kevin Williams. The additions of Sidney Rice and Bobby Wade at WR have been a positive in the passing game. Our special teams has improved from last year, especially the play of punter Chris Kluwe. Of course there are still a lot of question marks surrounding this team, but nothing that can’t be fixed. Notching 8 or 9 wins in a season isn’t something to be extremely proud about, but considering where this team was a year ago and what the expectations were going into the season, I’d say that it’s been a success. Like you said though, we blew our chance to get into the playoffs on our own. Maybe that’s where we can say that our season was disappointing, but with a 9-7 (I’m thinking ahead…) record we can say that it was a success. (Or at least not a failure)

I think you have to say that this year was a success even though they threw it away at the end, which is no surprise to Viking fans around the US. Sending 7 to the pro bowl and having the ROY in Peterson and NFC rushing leader is saying a lot for a team who nobody thought was going to win more than 4 games this year, including myself. I expected the worst when they drafted Peterson, thinking it would be another Michael Bennett added to the roster. Who knew he would turn out more like Robert Smith! It definitely gives all the loyal fans something to be excited about next year, unless something great happens on Miracle Sunday. Go Vikes, and even more Go Cowboys!!!

I’d have to say that the year was a success. I didn’t think they’d win 8 games this year to be honest. I thought they’d be a 7-9 team. I don’t think they deserve to go to the playoffs this year. They are too young on the offensive side of the ball and would probably get bounced out in the first round anyhow. If they would have won that ’skins game, I would feel differently. A few bad calls by the refs, bad coaching/playcalling by Chili, and bad QB’ing decisions by TJ are what did us in this year. I think they need to put more 2 RB sets in with both CT and AD in the backfield. Chili needs to be more aggressive, I’d like to see a new Offensive Coordinator come in, one with some guts and some imagination on how to use the weapons we do have. I think that if AD stays healthy and they use him right, we could be a great team next year (providing that TJ can play like he did during their 5-game winning streak). I also think we need a big name DE from the draft or Free Agency to put more pressure on the opposing QBs. That would really relieve some pressure off of our DBs and they could play better pass coverage w/o having to blitz all the time and leave open big holes in the middle of the secondary.

Danielle–You’re right, I think the biggest reason to consider this season a success is to take into account where this team was last season. As you pointed out, they’ve shown major improvement in several key areas, and there are some playoff calibur aspects of the team (offensive line, run defense). The biggest thing is that their problems are fixable, and if addressed, they can be a factor in 2008–like I said, a quarterback, improved receivers, and an improved pass rush (and that last thing is easier said than done–it’s not often you’ll see an elite DE on the market) would make this team a very dangerous one in the NFC. In my opinion, the offseason focus absolutely must be on those three areas.
Jeremy–Peterson’s another big reason to consider this season a success…if you put a servicable passing game around him, he can be the best running back in the NFL without a single doubt in my mind. In that respect, I think the biggest offseason need for the Vikings is arguably a quality quarterback who can start next season…while I think T-Jack can be a good quarterback down the road, as of now, he just doesn’t have the tools to lead an effective passing attack. And again, AD’s success depends largely on a quality passing game.
Paul–Looking at the defense, the glaring weakness is absolutely once again the pass rush. Like I said, though, it’s an extremely difficult position to improve through free agency…if the Vikings are indeed unable to sign a DE, it’s definitely a position that needs to be addressed in the draft. I’m not a big fan of Bevell, either…he’s not using AD effectively (teams are putting eight guys in the box, and Bevell seems to have no response to that), and his playcalling was at times a little too safe for my liking.

The Vikes have been unable to generate a pass rush with their defenseive line. I would bet that most of their sacks have been on blitzes.

i think 9-7 is where i had them pegged i expected them to dominate the division at least squeak away 50-50 against green bay but they lost both to green bay and 1 to detroit which of course we al know they basically said no we dont want to win you take it because a decently average field goal missed and a terrible OT caused that loss along with all the games they lost in the fourth quarter and to 10 or less is embarrassing. quarterback, pass rush, wide out but will a decently better pass rush help that bad pass defense i mean those corners get torched when fairly good passing teams decide to throw and some bad ones for that matter
