The New Look of College Basketball

It's snug up top, and wide and flowing below the waist... and with these new uniforms, college basketball gets one stop closer to everyone wearing team-themed wedding dresses. What you see above (via men.style.com) are new Nike uniforms that will be worn by four college basketball teams -- Arizona, Florida, Ohio State, and Syracuse -- in postseason tournament action.

It's an interesting look. Purists aren't going to love it, but such is life. If purists had their way, everyone would be playing in wool socks and buzzcuts. The youngsters like to look good, and for better or worse, being fashion-forward will help in recruiting. If a team's taking the court in some slick new Nike joints, it boosts the school's image, and recruits dig that. It makes a difference. I really believe that's true. And if the 70-year-old season ticket holders don't like, they're just going to have to get over it.

I sort of like the long-sleeve look on top (for everyone but Syracuse, I guess), though I'm not really down with checking out the ab definition of every player on the court. I wouldn't have guessed that there was room for basketball shorts to get any baggier, but Nike disagreed. Kevin Durant could smuggle a couple of small- to medium-sized agents in there, and the NCAA would never know. Greg Oden could put some books in there and get some studying done during free throws, and the Duke players have room for brass knucks, ninja stars, nunchakus, or semi-automatic weapons... whatever means of violence they're using these days.
