SI.com: Pryor leaning toward Ohio State

Posted by Steven Ibanez/PennLive.com February 04, 2008 15:58PM

Categories: Penn State
Michigan football head coach Rich Rodriguez, left, sits with Terrelle Pryor during a college basketball game between Iowa and Michigan.

All-world quarterback Terrelle Pryor is"80-90 percent sure" he will announce his college decision on ESPN Wednesday, SI.com's Jack McCallum is reporting. While McCallum is told sources believe Pryor will be playing for the Buckeyes next year, it appears Michigan is still in the picture:

Sources believe that Pryor is leaning toward Ohio State, which had been the early favorite of the western Pennsylvania star with 4.4 speed. But there has also been much speculation that Pryor, whose 8,499 career yards were almost equally divided between passing and running, would choose Michigan and the spread-offense philosophy of new coach Rich Rodriguez.

Early Monday The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that Pryor decided not to visit Oregon and would be calling the Ducks to tell them he was no longer considering a move to the great Northwest. The Post-Gazette still lists Penn State as a possible destination, but Big Ten rivals Ohio State and Michigan appear to be the frontrunners for Pryor's services.

Pryor said he will decide among Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, although Ohio State and Michigan have been the leaders all along.

Talk about the latest Penn State recruiting rumors in the fan forum and follow Pennsylvania's top prospects in the Keystone recruiting forum.

Question: Why is Pennlive still reporting on Pryor? The kid doesn't "know about playing up there (State College)". I wish him well but screw this kid! He's obviously not playing for us. I don't need to read every time he passes gas, burps, ect., ect.... Move on Pennlive. I have.

Pryor will choose OSU over MICH and PSU because OSU is considered to be in contention for a title next year. So of course he will go with them and try to be the face that wins them the title. Kind of how T.O. went to the eagles, helped them get over the hump and make the Super Bowl only to demand more money. He knew what he was doing and didn't want to be in Philly. Just like Pryor will do, if they win next year he will be a 2 year college player only! He sees OSU as being the closest to a title and if they do win, he will be the cockiest kid in the world! I doubt Pryor would pick OSU if their returning defensive starters would have entered the draft. Now as a PSU fan, I never once thought he would choose PSU, but I cant wait to see him against Linebacker U.

Linebacker U better learn to tackle better than this past year if they face pryor. But honestly this kid is special but needs to be in the right place at the right time to be great. Where will that be?... who knows but its not PSU, joepa would NEVER play a freshman at QB. If given the chance pryor will be amazing but he could also end up being the next Ron powlus. I wish him the best and many great games in the years to come no matter where it may be.

As for pennlives coverage of pryor. he is the most hyped and talked about PA player since Lavar. He has earned all the ink he gets from a PA newspaper and website.

Name all the great freshman QBs....that's right. There aren't any. The Big Ten isn't WPIAL AA ball. It wouldn't be a bad thing for him to learn from someone who has been in college for a few years and start as a sophmore. QB is one of the most important positions on a team. That's why freshman don't usually start...outside of Notre Dame. Ask the kid at ND how getting sacked 58 times improved his play.

Never said he would be great as a freshman. Getting to play and learn is the key. He will not be used to his best abailities if he goes to PSU and joepa is still there... that's why at best they are the 3rd best team in the big ten every year. Who at PSU is going to teach him how to be a QB? Mcquerry, Jaypa?... give me a break. Why PSU die hards can't admit PSU is a mediocre program is beyond me.

And sorry but WPIAL AA may not be the biggest baddest division in the state but this team may have been and he is the main reason why.

I would be surprised if Pryor announces on signing day. All indications are he has not reached a decision and is not really close. Believe it or not there are pros and cons with each of the schools he is considering.

If he is mature enough, and I suspect he's getting good advce from all those close to him, he will reconsider the prospect of playing as a freshman or at least starting. I suppose it wouldn't hurt him to to be third down QB. But with the exception of Michigan, because of their unusual circumstances, it would be practically impossible for him to be the starting QB this fall at OSU or PSU.

SI is reporting that the buckeyes have an edge right now. Considering the fact that 5th year senior QB Todd Boeckman is still on campus, I don't think Tressel would promote Pryor over the senior who went 12-0 in the regular season last year, especially if the freshman is not going to enroll in time for spring drills. So maybe Pryor is warming to the idea of a year's preparation and acclamation to college life. That of course could bring PSU back into contention.

The more I think about it, he would be a fool to go to Michigan. They' just want to use him like a rag doll to lessen the pains of transition by throwing him to the wolves as freshman. That's not looking out for the kid, and is certainly not what's best for him. Michigan should hunker down and just make do like Florida when they went to the spread with Urban Meyer.

Of the three remaining schools on the short list, I believe only Penn State has Pryor's best interests at heart, both academically and atheletically. Tressel might take care of the atheletics part but Pryor will never graduate from OSU. It takes at least 3.5 years - as a buckeye he'll be 3 and done.

It doesn't matter where he goes, and if he came to PSU it wouldn't matter much until the coaching staff changes its offensive offense style.

By the way aquaman0824 - it doesn't matter how good you are in High School, the game is vastly different in College. Not saying he won't be good, but we have seen so many so called can't miss recruits bust in college, because they can't adapt to the over all change. Hope he does well at OSU. It will be fun to watch big linebackers run him down and hit him. Something he never saw in his high school league.

Starting a freshman QB is not ideal, but sometimes you just have to play with the cards you are dealt. Henne was a freshman QB and had a decent year. Not great but more than good enough for someone with as little as experience as he at the time.

The argument about Pryor going to the school who is looking out for his best interests is a bit disingenious. PSU, OSU and Them coaches and fans are all hoping Pryor chooses its respective school because it is in the best interests of that particular program and not Pryor individually.

Although I would like to Pryor in a Them uniform, he should (and will) choose the team that he feels is best for him. Good luck to him either way.

nittanyjo:

The game may be vastly different in college, but from watching his tapes, I will say Pryor looks fairly impressive. Who really knows if his athleticism will translate to success in college? There is always a degree of uncertainty. However, if he ends up being the second coming of Vince Young, OSU or Them will be terrorizing the rest of the Big Ten for a good three years. And no, I don't think Dan Conner can chase Vince Young down in a foot race.

There have been some good Freshman Quarterbacks in college football. Chad Henne is one, Tim Tebow is another, Drew Bledsoe, the list goes on and on. One thing about College ball iare top teams can insulate a freshman because most op teams only play 2-3 other top teams all year and the quality of play differs greatly for example in the Big Ten there is big drop off from playing OSU one week to playing your next 3 games against Minn. Northwestern, and Indiana, then a non-conference game against a mid level MAC school.

I believe Pryor can play and contribute right away where ever he decides to play. The kids that GOOD!
