Career Over? Carolina Panthers Cut Keyshawn Johnson

The Carolina Panthers have cut wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, the Charlotte Observer is reporting.

Johnson became expendable on Saturday, when the Panthers drafted USC wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, who is expected to play essentially the same role in the offense that Johnson played last year. Jarrett was identified immediately as a replacement for Johnson.

Although Johnson (who was an ESPN analyst during the draft) welcomed the move at the time, it could be the end of his career. Johnson turns 35 in July, and that's way past the normal shelf life for a wide receiver. Johnson can still be effective -- last year he started all 16 games, catching 70 passes for 815 yards -- but there's a good chance that at this point in his career, he can make more money on TV than he can on the football field.

Johnson was the first pick of the 1996 draft. He played four years for the Jets, four for the Buccaneers, two for the Cowboys, and one for the Panthers.
