The Carolina Panthers have cut wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, the Charlotte Observer is reporting.Johnson became expendable on Saturday, when the Panthers drafted USC wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett, who is expected to play essentially the same role in the offense that Johnson played last year. Jarrett was identified immediately as a replacement for Johnson.
Although Johnson (who was an ESPN analyst during the draft) welcomed the move at the time, it could be the end of his career. Johnson turns 35 in July, and that's way past the normal shelf life for a wide receiver. Johnson can still be effective -- last year he started all 16 games, catching 70 passes for 815 yards -- but there's a good chance that at this point in his career, he can make more money on TV than he can on the football field.
Johnson was the first pick of the 1996 draft. He played four years for the Jets, four for the Buccaneers, two for the Cowboys, and one for the Panthers.

I think it is well deserved. Keyshawn was way too arrogant, and not even that good of a received. He just had good size. Did you hear him at the draft saying Calvin Johnson reminds him of himself. YEAH RIGHT!!!! He thinks he is the greatest receiver to play the game. What has he done in the league, besides rant and rave about him getting the ball, and when he does...he will do nothing with it (PERIOD). I am a Steeler fan, but Panthers...get him outta there.

As a Trojans fan I saw this coming a mile away.
Key was talking leading up to and during the draft about how DJ should have stayed in school and wasn't ready for the nfl.
The more time went by that DJ wasn't being drafted Key kept saying he should have stayed at SC.
To be fare though Key offered to help him any way he could, and that was before Carolina picked him.
To be doubly fare to Jarrett, would you want anything to do with the egomaniac?
And, what if as a rookie the Panthers would have expected Dwayne to actually look at Key as a mentor?
As Marlon Brando's character Colonel Kurtz in "Apocalypse Now" would put it..."THE HORROR!"
Than when Key interviewed DJ on espn after he was drafted you could tell the kid was unhappy he slipped so far and pissed about Key's comments.
Carolina got rid of Key to protect Jarrett from an egomaniac the same way the Raiders got rid of Moss to protect Russell.

TrojanMan: Did you watch the Rose Bowl? Dwayne Jarrett is well on his way to matching if not surpassing Keyshawn in the ego department. Tho slipping in the draft and deferring to Steve Smith may help humble him a bit.
As for Keyshawn, if he is serious about wanting to win a ring, then the Chargers might be a good fit for him. The Bolts need a veteran receiver to complement Vincent Jackson, Eric Parker, and Craig Davis.

I dont think he should retire. It's not his fault Delhomme unlearned football for the 06 season and everyone behind him is even worse.
If Keyshawn can keep his ego in check(unlikely)he would be a great fit on an already good team...Pittsburgh/SD/Denver.

I have been a huge Panthers fan since their inception. I take my Dad to every home game and obsess about every personel move they make. I hated Keyshawn when he played for Dallas and subsequently at Tampa. I jumped for joy when he was suspended by Gruden. I was tentatively pleased when we signed him last year.
ALL THAT SAID, he changed. He has a heart of gold and was one of the best things the Panthers had going last year (up there with Steve Smith and Julius Peppers). Although you wouldn't know it from the ESPN draft clips, his ego never was an issue for the Panthers (or the Cowboys for that matter). He was a great contributor and will be missed tremendously.
I can't help but think letting him go is a serious miscalculation that might come back to bite the Panthers next season. Keyshawn, I salute you and hope that life treats you well.
I also hope that you don't sign with an NFC team, because I still respect the football skills you bring to the table.

Egomaniac?
So he should never play again?
People sure have a way of passing judgement these days. 70 catches for 815 yards would be missed by ANY team who do you people think the panthers are - the All-Madden team?
Keyshawn will get the last laugh on this one.

This is ridiculous, Keyshawn was the one they needed to teach Jarrett. If they were going to cut receivers, Keary Colbert's head should have been the one on the chopping block. Now I guess we got Smith and a rookie as starting receivers with injury-prone DREW CARTER in the slot and Colbert being a garbage receiver who can't play and can't teach Jarrett anything

They should've considered Olsen and kept the receiving situation as is. The odds are verrrrry high that Jarrett will be a disappointment with Carolina. By all accounts he's the kind of guy who needs to have his hand held. Hell, he needed Leinart to practically babysit him in SoCal. The guy was constantly homesick for his mom in the east coast. This does not look good. Keyshawn is exactly what this kid needed...and now he has Smith and Colbert. Good luck with that. Smith couldn't give a damn who's on the field as long as he is option 1,2,3 and returning punts. I see wholesale purges in Carolina at the end of the year. GM,coach,QB are out. Coach Chin is literally in the same area code and is stock piling ugly sweaters as we speak. Good job idiots.

I'm so proud of Keyshawn, he did an amazing job on Saturday as an Anaylst during the draft, he was on point and so professional. Never really liked him before but after Saturday, I have a lot of admiration and love for him. We will be seeing him on ESPN or Sportscenter as an Analyst very very soon.. All the best to Keyshawn.

For those that claim Keyshawn is an egomaniac...
He may be, but he also sacrifices his body, gets creamed catching the football, and will go out of his way to block the crap out of anyone on defense.
As long as he keeps his mouth shut, he's as good of a team player as you can hope for. It's a shame that so many people are obsessed with statistics. I'll take Keyshawn's 800 yards and run blocking any day over a lot of these 1,000+ yard receivers.

Hello people i just have to say this. To all you jacka$$ people who thinks that it was a good idea please keep your opinions for someone who dont know about football. Key was perfect for the panthers. Who better to teach DJ than Key. They both are very good and if you idiots paid any attention to the games you would know that DJ is just a younger Key. Yea Key loud but hell people other than marvin harris all recievers cry for attention. Please dont be as stupid to beleive some dumb jock in the office say that key is expendable. Its almost as dumb as the eagle's choice

Keyshawn should not retire just yet...Key has at least 2 years left. I think he should go with the Titans sense they are in need of a veteran receiver...Oh yeah...Key don't be hatin if you don't catch as many passes as the rookies receivers. Be a team player.
