Some people ask me what I do during winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do, I stare out the window and wait for spring. ~Roger Hornsby

oh geeesh
MLB.com isn't offering that gameday thing, so the only way to follow the game is through their Streaming Audio.  Anyhow, if anyone has this and wants to fill us all in on the action, please do.

Audio
As I try to login to listen, MLB.com keeps saying that they're upgrading their site, now, today, on the first full day of games.

In conclusion, I can't hear it.

Is this happening to everyone with MLB audio or just me?

by mixmastahh on Feb 28, 2008 1:24 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

By upgrading...
I meant just general maintenance.  So maybe the site has crashed under the thousands of people at work who want to not work and listen?

It works!
It's baseball!

I'm listening on XM
Nothing like hearing that "O!" during the anthem for the first time this year.

Adam had a decent first inning. Walked one, struck out one. Ramon had some troubles, though, making a bad throw to 2nd allowing H. Ramirez to steal, then completely flubbing the throw (he accidentally threw it up the left field line? I didn't really understand) when Ramirez stole third, allowing Ramirez to score.

Meanwhile in the bottom of the first, Roberts walks to start the game and immediately steals 2nd and 3rd base. Melvin hits a chopper to third and Roberts comes in to score.

Sergio Mitre is out
hurt himself and just limped off the field. Sad for him.

Awwww man
During the first game in ST?  That sucks.

Loewen walks 2
to start the 2nd. He's on a 35 pitch/2 inning limit.

by Stacey on Feb 28, 2008 1:45 PM EST   0 recs

the mlb audio
is working again.

Adam Loewen had a poor start, but does that really mean anything?  I doubt it.

boo
Ramon's having a tough day, too.  Jones made a good throw to get Jorge Cantu out and Ramon dropped it.

Adam Jones throws a strike to the plate!
That would have nailed Cantu if only Ramon hadn't dropped the ball.

by Stacey on Feb 28, 2008 1:51 PM EST   0 recs

real live baseball
i'm positively giddy.

course, as soon as I get the audio working 2 runs score and razor drops the ball.

welcome to the 2008 season!

Game Day Audio Subscription
If I order the Game Day Audio subscription, do I get to listen to the Orioles, or is there a blackout in the Baltimore region?

You're good
I live in Salisbury, and it lets me get it fine.
I remember 14 straight foul balls in one at-bat.

Jones walks
And then gets picked off :(

by Stacey on Feb 28, 2008 2:05 PM EST   0 recs

I think
there's definitely a feel for running at the right time and stuff like that that AJ's not quite getting yet this year.  I wouldn't read too much into anything.
Dick Valentine (on Mascot Millar): "Someone told me you were cool, but the more I think about it that someone must've been you."

by elk on Feb 28, 2008 2:07 PM EST   0 recs

So
looking at the Box Score that was 4 BB for Adam Loewen and he couldn't even get an out in the 2nd Inning?  This is going to be one long fucking season.

"Everyone always says 'You don't have to do this.'"

Whatever
last spring he was striking everyone out and that didn't mean shit when the season actually started.

and tell them they suck.

i did!!!

i got in finally
via a minor workaround: i chose an old vid from O's page, then clicked "Use old player", i.e. not the silverlight player, then clicked "today" and found the game stream there.

by thewaywardO on Feb 28, 2008 2:29 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I didn't know Cantu was with the Marlins
He could have a good comeback year with a fresh start.

I understand that its Spring Training
But still, this is not good....

by spike2131 on Feb 28, 2008 2:47 PM EST   0 recs

True, it is just Spring Training...
...but it is refreshing to note the honest incompetence with which the Os will approach this season. No strong starts out of the gate for this team. No sir. No getting hopes up. Faaaaantastic.

I'm just taking my angst out for a practice spin..
Its Spring Training after all, time to prepare for the regular season.
"Baltimore? That's like being hit in the head with a crowbar once a day."

by spike2131 on Feb 28, 2008 3:03 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Indeed
A quick glance at a href="recent spring training standings[/a] should help maintain some perspective.

Plus, this year, all we gotta do is look at player development.  I don't care if we lose 10-1, as long as we see some guys making strides to get better and reach their potential.  We're not gonna be doing any "surprising" in the AL East.  Let's leave that to the Rays.

So glad baseball is finally back, win or lose.  Go O's!

by PhilR8 on Feb 28, 2008 3:19 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I agree with the idea...
...that we have to watch the players, not the team. I'm down with that. Bring on the growth. Let's see Adam Jones, and Nick, and Scott Moore, and maybe Constsanzo, and the grab-bag of young pitchers in the 'pen and rotation.

But the only thing that's gonna get me through watching the team finish in 5th place is the contradiction of embracing the hope they represent WHILE being cynical and depressed about the W-L record they put up. It's either that or starting up a P. Angelos "Death Pool."

by KenDixonFanClub on Feb 28, 2008 3:29 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

brob
almost just killed angel and macphail (in radio booth) with a foul ball.

by thewaywardO on Feb 28, 2008 3:00 PM EST   0 recs

ha
Macphail is talking about the Roberts trade with Joe Angel, with Roberts batting, and a foul ball almost takes their head off, maybe Roberts heard?

by nesloq on Feb 28, 2008 3:01 PM EST   0 recs

correction
about proposed trades, which basically Macphail said  since it's ST, everyone is going to be evaluating players that they can actually see, nothing new.

Louis
Am I the only person impressed with how well Hernendez has handled the bat so far?  Walk and a single today, some good plate appearances yesterday; if it weren't for his error in the field I'd say he's looking really solid.

by Dr Orpheus on Feb 28, 2008 3:53 PM EST   0 recs

repeat after me...
.296 career OBP in the minor leagues...296 OBP in the minor leagues
I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

by Dave at Bottomfeeder Baseball on Feb 28, 2008 4:29 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

But a .300 OBP in the Majors
...with a .290 average. The problem seems to be that he doesn't take walks. In which case, todays walk is a good sign...
"Baltimore? That's like being hit in the head with a crowbar once a day."

by spike2131 on Feb 28, 2008 4:37 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

if...
somehow in the offseason he has developed the ability to work the count and get on base at even a middling .340, with his glove i suppose you could let him slide until you found a real major leaguer to play short.

but even at .290/.340/.325 (which, by the way, would be better than he's EVER done in SIX minor league seasons), he'd STILL be one of the worst every day players in the big leagues.

less than 1/5 of his hits in the minors have gone for extra bases.  so his job needs to be:  get on base.  a .300 OBP sucks.  period.

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

by Dave at Bottomfeeder Baseball on Feb 28, 2008 5:37 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

that would be quite an acomplishment
Im not talking about getting that high an OBP, i'm talking about getting an OBP higher than his slugging percentage.  I was under the impression that it isnt possible, but maybe i'm wrong.

And i dont know if i would call .340 middling for a SS, more like below average.  I've heard that .300 is the Mendoza line for OBP, and Adam Everett has survived with a career OBP under .300.  But i agree with you in that he's no good.

by Reddrummer9187 on Feb 28, 2008 5:59 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Reggie Willits
OBP'd an impressive .391 with an equally (un)-impressive SLG of .344 in 2007.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/willire03.shtml

by pipkin on Feb 28, 2008 7:09 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

interesting
I didnt know that; actually i didnt know how slugging worked in general.  So total bases over at bats.

by Reddrummer9187 on Feb 29, 2008 11:43 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

SLG
slugging is a relationship between number of total bases per hit.  it has little to do with OBP.  if one gets on base one base at a time, as Little Luis and Willits do, they will have a higher OBP than SLG.

but you're right, it does take a "special" player to pull it off.

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

Too bad Larry Bigbie isn't around any more
They could room together and Larry could give Luis some "tips" on how to improve those power numbers....

So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Adam Jones
I hope Trembley doesn't bury him at 8 throughout the season. Bat him 2nd and drop Melvin (who sucks). I know Melvin would throw a shit fit, but then you have an opportunity to bench his ass and play Moore.

by pipkin on Feb 28, 2008 7:10 PM EST   0 recs

In the long run, yeah
But 8 is good to start at. I want Adam to get to the 2 spot, but I like that Trembly is going to make him  earn it.

batting behind B-Rob. Do it Trembley.
