Eagles Part Ways With Veteran LB Spikes
The Eagles announced on Thursday that they have released veteran weakside linebacker Takeo Spikes.
"Takeo did a really good job for us last year," said head coach Andy Reid in a statement. "But we are excited about the young linebackers that have developed over the last year. We wish Takeo all the best. He's a true team player on and off the field."
A 10-year NFL veteran, Spikes spent the 2007 season with the Eagles and finished second on the team with 139 tackles and also had one sack in 14 games. Spikes missed the final two games of the season after he was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn rotator cuff.
The Eagles have some experience on the weak side with Omar Gaither and Akeem Jordan. Gaither started seven total games (five regular season, two postseason) on the weak side during his rookie year in 2006. He moved to the middle in 2007 and started all 16 games at middle linebacker. A rookie free agent in 2007, Jordan started at weakside linebacker in the season finale against Buffalo.
If the Eagles decide to move Gaither back to the weak side, they have Stewart Bradley as an option in the middle. A third-round pick in 2007, Bradley saw extensive playing time at middle linebacker in the late season win at New Orleans and he responded with 10 tackles and an interception.
The play of the young linebackers prompted the team to part ways with Spikes.
A two-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the top playmaking linebackers in recent NFL history, Spikes joined the Eagles on March 26, 2007, in a three-player trade with the Buffalo Bills. Takeo, which means "great warrior" in Japanese, was a first-round draft choice of Cincinnati in 1998 and spent his first five NFL campaigns with the Bengals before signing with the Bills in 2003.
Known for making "disruptive plays" (forced fumbles and interceptions), Spikes has created 26 total in his career. In 2007, Spikes registered 100-plus tackles for the eighth time in his career. He went to the Pro Bowl following the 2003 and 2004 seasons with the Bills.

just relax...if you really look ..yul see some pretty good DB at 34 too,..if you feel the need to draft one just like WR ,..about 12-15 pretty good ones,.and don't forget CB/S hybrids like reggie smith,.in some mocks he goin about 35-40. Our problem(s)..we need stud OL..early and one stud WR early and one tuff DB/S early if we trade Lito...by pick 50. |

No way they have Burress on a go every time a team dogs. Cover 1 the same way. But it's a shorter throw behind the outside shoulder. That makes it nice and easy for INT Eli. This is the thing that scares me bout Larry Fitzgerald.... He's gonna want so much money to restructure it might hurt us. The 32 million he's owed will have to be given in gaurantees on the new deal. But the yearly salary might effect our ability to sign key players to long term deals. The thing that saved us before when we signed Kearse and T.O.wasthat #36,Lito & guys signd deals what were less than they could have had. Idont know if we can sign Bradley, Gaither, Mikell, Jean-Gilles and other "up and comers"...... I don't want to give up the future for a Super Bowl now. So anyways that scares me a little. I like our team now! Lito and Samuel would be dynamite w/Brown in the slot. Brown plays better in the slot than he does outside for some reason... at least in the games I have to look at. The only thing I can come up with on passing Lito on ... would be his knee. I still think Burgess was the right move. He was never healthy and why take the chance? Even though it turned out he's stayed healthy so far I still feel that was the thing to do. |

My friend Dustin... He played WR and S at the "u".... He thinks he's a QB. He's OC on our Pop Warner team. Might have told you that before... Anyways he's pretty good offensively minded. He swears by Gruden. Gruden has done pretty well everywhere he's been. But he thinks Gruden is Top 5. Me? I don't. He just doesn't do what I would offensively. But he's good no doubt./////REID I like. Overall I like what he does... but as a play caller? No. Reid makes questionable moves on the field often. Off the field.... impeccable. Best thing for us was Morningweg callin plays. REID CANNOT BRING HIMSELF TO RUN IT. Unless it's second and long. Then he does it every time. |

All the rest I think were speculation. Larry seems to be the real deal. If we could get away with giving up Lito and RBrown(Which makes since since BJohnson is gone - Only have Sean Morey, Steve Breaston and Bolden.... Reggie would fit in there nicely) and a pick.....GREAT! I like Lito being here. I would like Fitgerald being here. WIN/WIN situation if you ask me. Better shot at Super Bowl w/Fitzgerald. The Cardinals and Fitzgerald have hit an impasse in contract renegotiations, according to The Arizona Republic, which also reported that the Eagles have offered cornerback Lito Sheppard and wide receiver Reggie Brown as trade bait with hopes of forcing the Cardinals to deal away the wideout if they can't reach an agreement to restructure his contract.
A league source confirmed to The News Journal that the Eagles have proposed a trade to Arizona, but the source couldn't elaborate on the details of the proposal.

Peep this.... My friend came over to watch this game... His cousin is Josh McCown QB raiders/ phins/ Cards.... He called my friend Dustin during the game the game. He tells Dustin that he was in Arizona playin Golf w/His pal Anquan Bolden. So I got on the phone and asked Josh to ask Anquan if Larry would be traded. And if so... to EAGLES for Lito. Blunt to say the least. Anyways a while later Josh calls back and says Anquan knows they are trying to work out a long term deal but that Larry told him he didn't know if they will get it done. He also said that he had no idea bout where Larry would get traded to. No surprise there. But.... this is where it picks up... he said Cards didn't have much cap room and only 16 players on Defense as of right now. Yikes! Then he said they signed Travis LaBoy today. Then he said that Coach Whisenhunt said at a team meeting that starting CB and 2005 7th overall pick Antrell Rolle will be moved to FS. That leaves Rod Hood, Rookie Mike Adams and my old teamate Brickwall Brown as the only CB's they have. 3! So they have to draft a CB when they pick. But do you want a rookie CB startin for you? NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said commissioner Roger Goodell will review Jones' case before training camps start in July.
And should Jones be reinstated, the Cowboys would have to work out a trade with the Titans.
But the Titans could also release Jones, putting him on the open market.
Jones' Atlanta-based attorney, Manny Arora, did not return a phone call seeking comment, but he told The (Nashville) Tennessean he planned to ask Goodell to re-examine Jones' suspension before the April 26-27 NFL draft.
On Thursday, Jones again said he wants to play for the Cowboys, on an Atlanta radio station.
"I just have to do what I have to do to get back on the field," he said. "Hopefully it won't be long, and hopefully it will be a couple of more months. I would love to play for the Cowboys, America's Team."

Game changer at RB? Probably a better idea. Being a NEBRASKA guy it kills me seeing #36 bounce around so much. Short yardage run game murders me. Whomever we have... he needs to get it up in there quick w/leverage and push the pile. Then I would relax even if we were losing by 50. Buck "goes with it" like I'm talkin bout but he's just... he's just... He doesn't have great hands, he doesn't block well, he's a step slow, he doesn't have great wiggle, he's a bit small to be Power back. But he does enough of those things well enough to be No. 2... And I think we would be better w/him at 3. That's all I'll say bout our RB's. If Hunt is the guy? Great. If it's a 4th or 5th rounder? Great. Buck again? Just talkin to friend o mine.... I hope Tony Hunt beats out Buck. Buck is a good player. And he's a solid 2nd. But Hunt is big and strong. And he could pound the D and really soft'n'em up a few carries a game for #36. They would be bout opposite as you can get. Buck runs well. But as I watch these games. He always seems to make a mistake whether it's a dropped pass or missed block. And that's hard for me to say. Since he's NEBRASKA. 1 of our main problems in the Red Zone is we can't for 1 reason or another run it in down there. Early 90's cowboys would just pound it inside the 5. You couldn't stop'em down there. Wonderin tonight while we watch turkeys munchin on seeds. Tony Hunt might help us down there. But I don't have anything to watch of him. 2 college games where he dominated. He just didn't get carries. Hope he makes a splash in camp. |

Charles is BIG play.... Better than Benson. Benson had great blocking. Charles didn't. But Hart is a true Football Player. Talks too much for me but I can live w/that. Seems to me they both would be nice compliment to #36. But so would Hunt. We'll find out. Draft 1 4th or 5th? Sure. |

Hunt disappointed in a number of ways..he really needs to improve,.and sorry ,..I don't see him asa FB...not gonna happen...alot good Rbs this year,..we gotta draft one in 3rd-5th...i want quality..ilike yur choice alot....but i also like that C. johnson but most mocks have him gone by early 3rd. |

And those idiots that say those things are well idiots. And they shouldn't bother me. Having lived in Nebraska and being around those fans for a few years I don't get the boo'n. Never heard such stuff in that proud state. Are you a fan or enemy? Can't be both. I don't like Considine much or even possibly the signing of Samuel. Seahawks.... signed TJ Duckett and Julius Jones.... That'll be it for Shaun Alexander. Often times RB's will lose a step quickly and great 1's become average virtually overnight. But ole Alexander seemed to do it faster than most. 1 week he was the best in the league. Next week gettin boo'd. Not by Philly fans who boo #5's 1st incomplete pass. But by Seattle fans that are thouroughly behind their players. 1 reason they have such a great home record. 1 reason we had such a bad 1. Anyways you gotta suck to be boo'd by Seattle fans. Run play. Moats out. Pass. Somethin like that. But he'll be right there with Buck and Hunt. Chris Johnson... He's fast. How do you like that? Quite a review. /// Too me... Jamal Charles is better. And he's faster. 10.2/100 meters. Big 12 tops. Plus side to side Charles seems to be able to make missers of people. I would love a guy like Mike Hart in the 3rd. But with Hunt a 3rd last year there's no way. Really it depends on Hunt. We only saw him in short yardage and pre-season. He might be the next Lito or Brown or Bunkley. Guys that didn't see the field their 1st year but look pretty good to me. I wouldn't give up on Hunt. Buck is a veteran guy. And a solid running back. And a good leader and teamate. Good guy. But he can't pass block either. So Hunt could be our backup next year. Hunt looked as good as Curtis Ennis in college. Yeesh!!! |

Kirk.... Greg Wesley. I was surprised to hear he wanted out. He's good player and is 1 of the Smartest around. He's one that can have everyone lined up and ready to go. A true Football player. That said if it was next year after #20's contract is up.... Yes. But this year I think we are set. I still think we will draft a S this to push Considine as SS backup. Then this draftee will move to FS when #20 goes. If Wesley was dropped. Then obviously he would be a fantastic pickup. But trade? I'm w/ Brizer....Naw I guess not. |

A) Because they were not negotiating a Spikes contract or they would definitely lose the inflated numbers.
B) Because you don't have the Jimmy Johnson tapes man!!! Takeo was an ANIMAL in the Jimmy Johnson tapes!!! He may have even had an interception or two in there but he was so busy killing people that they figured they better not include them or they would look really bad for this move. Hell we were one of the best teams in the league on the Jimmy Johnson tapes, you gotta check 'em out! |

The Eagles are making the right moves. Continuing to sign the great young talent, off-ing the old average players to make room for youth and finding key free agents so they can focus their draft. I predict they will take an offensive lineman, a left tackle to be specific, in the coming draft. Anyway, the last old average guy that needs to go is Darren Howard, let the young guys blossom and Howard is just dead weight/payroll in the way at this point. As far as the DB situation either move Brown to safety along side Dawkins or trade Lito to the Lions for Roy Williams a legit #1 WR and then life is good!!! GO EAGLES!!! |

Spikes was just like Trotter. He was a great player. He hit like a hammer but he was slow reacting to plays. He missed alot of big plays and the younger guys were playing better last season. Spikes is starting to show his age and we cant afford to make mistakes at LB when we are blessed with all that young talent. What blows my mind about this is why NOW??? Why didn't we drop him earlier so we could offer Moss enough money he wouldnt be able to say NO. Only thing I can think of is they cleared room for a possible trade for Fitz! As far young LB play I am not sure what they saw! Gocong was marginal at best! Stewart and Gaither I like, Gocong reminded me of Dahani Jones LB playing out of position! I hope they have a big play up their sleeve to balance this out |

Spikes would have been valuable backing up SLB(Gocong) and MLB(Bradley)...... but 5 million is too much. He played pretty well. And will be remembered.... But.... he killed us with some INT drops and like everyone said about him in Buffalo..... He was usually a step behind a big play. |
