Dallas Cowboys in trade talks; hang onto key free agents
The DMN blog reports that the Cowboys are in the works to trade Jason Ferguson to Miami.
Sources inform Calvin "Lucky" Watkins that the Cowboys and Dolphins are discussing a trade that would send NT Jason Ferguson, a Bill Parcells favorite for years, to Miami. Not clear yet what the Cowboys might get in return.
Depending on the return, that move could free up some cap space.

Flozell Adams has signed a long term deal and Ken Hamlin is locked up for at least 2008. Marion Barber and Chris Canty both received the restricted free agent tenders they were expected; Barber at $2.56 million and Canty at $2.01 million. Good to go, right? Not so fast, according to Canty's agent:
"Chris was smiling and he likes it in Dallas, but there are still several possibilities here. One is trying to get an offer from another team, which would probably be one with a low first-round pick, for obvious reasons. Another is to redo a deal with Dallas, which I haven't heard from them on yet. And finally, with all these guys get tendered high, there's the possibility they wind up getting traded for something lower than the tender (compensation)."
Drew Rosenhaus, Barber's agent, has also made it clear that he will be looking for the maximum deal possible for his client. This type of talk is expected from sports agents but there is some validity to their points. A player is not completely protected as a restricted free agent and teams could put the dreaded "poison pill" into a competing contract which would make it tough for the Cowboys to match. Barber is most likely safe with his high tender but Canty is not a sure thing. A defensive end of his ability would be valuable to teams looking for playmakers on defense; there are several teams with plenty of cap room that would be able to make a large contract offer for Canty.
It will be interesting to see what might happen. Would you be willing to give up Canty for an extra first round draft pick?

Jerry Jones took care of some needed business today and signed Flozell Adams to a long term deal before he hit the free agent market. The best news is that it seems the deal won't break the bank.
ESPN reports that it's a 6 year deal worth $42 million, with $15 million guaranteed. As Grizz mentioned below, it will be interesting to see how the deal is set up and how much of a cap hit that Cowboys will take over the next few years. I think that this was a great move on both sides and the Flozell might have decided to take less money to stay in Dallas. If he had gone into tomorrow a free agent he could have attracted a relatively astronomical contract as the top left tackle on the market; if that happened he was as good as gone.
Now the question remains on what the Cowboys will be able to do in free agency with their top free agents all taken care of. I do not even attempt to be a salary cap expert but you have to think things are getting pretty tight, especially if you factor in the Cowboys will have to sign at least one first round draft pick this year. A Jason Ferguson trade would free up some cap space, but other moves might have to be made as well.
Read the Star-Telegram story on the Flozell Adams signing here.

Todd Archer pens a pretty good piece about Zach Thomas and makes some interesting points about his work ethic and drive. There is no doubt that Dallas acquired one of the hardest working guys in the NFL, along with one it's best leaders. The problem is his signing causes a surplus of starting linebackers on the team:
They have five guys for four spots. Bradie James isn't going anywhere. Kevin Burnett and Bobby Carpenter are core special teamers and don't cost a lot of money against the cap. By process of elimination, Akin Ayodele appears to be the odd man out. Should the Cowboys trade or cut him, they would save $500,000 against the cap this year.
I like Akin Ayodele and think that he is a solid player; unfortunately he may be the odd man out. The Cowboys could package him in a trade but I think the most likely scenario is they just cut him. It's a sad part about the business side of the game.
Nick Eatman talks about the restricted free agents and addresses the Akin Ayodele issue as well.

Lenny P. over at ESPN talks about under-the-radar free agents.

Don Banks at si.com has another mock draft. This one plays out the outrageous scenario of Dallas making a draft day trade with New England.

would like to get a 4th-6th for Fergie...

Fergy Numbers
Fergy, when healthy, is an outstanding NT. I'd like to see Rat moved to DE. If Fergy is traded (or cut) then there isn't a true NT on the roster. Rat may have to stay at NT.
Data on Rotoworld and USAToday indicate Fergy's bonus proration at 1.625 million per year. Two years remain on his contract (each with a salary of 4 million).
If traded, all of the remaining bonus proration (3.25 mil) will be included in the 2008 CAP.
Therefore: 4 mil salary that you wouldn't have to pay will offset the 3.25 mil acceleration, resulting in a 750 K savings on the 2008 CAP.

Actual CAP charge
to clarify my previous post.
The scheduled 2008 CAP charge:
4 mil salary + 1.625 bonus proration = 5.625 Mil
2008 CAP charge if traded:
3.25 mil (accelerated bonus proration)
Savings:
2.375 mil

yes, its a great site
they usually have very good inside information at the ranch. They reported the last few days that Flo was going to be re-signed and guess what...they were also the first to report when Flo changed his agent.
I think its worth subscribing IMO.

For another first-rounder...
Boyz, I'm really hoping for a 3rd from Miami. Ferguson is a good/great NT, and the Dolphins have noone to man the position.
On the technical side, can anyone help? I don't have any formatting options (bold, italic, blockquote etc.) at home, but I do on the computers at work. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.
by goodjobtimmyheresabluestar on Feb 28, 2008 10:44 PM CST 0 recs
Agreed.
If you don't get for a 3rd, it's pointless.
With an early third, you can address the RB position with the late 3rd and the NT position with new 3rd. And not be that much worse off.
As for why the Dolphins would do that...well, they need some veteran experience besides Jason Taylor, right?

Total guess, but
Maybe you have an older browser at home than at work? Otherwise, I'm baffled.

Thanks for replying
I have IE7 in both places, so I'm going to assume that the browser alone is not the problem. It was my first guess too. Thanks Mr. Joos.
Just noticed: I can format now, and I am at home. Weird. Hope it stays.

He's not going there
They have 2 starting CBs. They are also cheap when it comes to paying out high profile FAs.
The Bucs are in talks with him. He fits in there zone style of defense perfectly.

Canty for 1st round pick?
"Would you be willing to give up Canty for an extra first round draft pick?"
We know Dallas' answer. They are apparently willing to so because they won't be able to match a team putting in a poison pill provision. It does sound like he would give Dallas a chance to make a comparable contract offer if he got an offer from another team out there.
Personally I would've rather seen us put down the extra 500k for the 1st and 3rd round tender, but note that I do not have a GM job. :)
by Jamie on Feb 29, 2008 4:16 AM CST 0 recs
We got Canty at Bargain Prices...
He was a projected 1st rounder that we were paying 4th round salary for... now we're misjudging his value and letting him slip away for way too cheap. Canty will be gone, easily. And I for one say BIG mistake. We get a 1st round guy that may or may not live up to his billing? Canty IS ALREADY AND WILL CONTINUE TO play like a 1st rounder.
But then again, that's why I'm not a GM?
I like the Flozell signing. Tony's blind side is worth every penny of this. I did not like the idea of rolling the dice on whether one of these other guys (Martin/Free...) was equal or better.
I hope we don't try to reach for DMac. It's like one of those "Tiger Woods or the Field?" bets... and my money is on the field... odds are on one or more of these other running backs in this draft being better than DMac. And we already have a solid guy in MBIII. Our focus needs to be elsewhere... we can find a GREAT RB project with our second 1st round pick or perhaps later.
I also don't want to lose Canty AND Fergie. We have Tank and the Rat, but suddenly our depth looks a bit suspect. Our defense was good against the run last year, but started to break down at year's end. I don't like the looks of things if we lose both guys.
by DalaiLuke on Feb 29, 2008 7:12 AM CST 0 recs
I disagree a little
First off I like Canty, nothing against him at all, good character guy, but Canty was a steal when we drafted him in the fourth round, but when you stop and step back and look at his game, he's solid, not spectacular, not a big play maker, he has his times during games where he makes solid plays against the run, but if you could get a first round pick for him, I dont think he'd be a big loss, Bowen has really stepped up in his limited times on the field and one of those picks for Canty could be translated into two picks if you trade down in the draft, and its a draft thats pretty deep along the offensive and defensive lines.
Ferguson, at his age if you could get a fifth rounder for him or a fifth rounder with the ablility to get a higher pick, say a fourth based on Fergusons performance next year, that would be a steal IMO, but I wouldn't expect anything more than a fifth for him straight up at his age.

I agree, Deke.
While Canty has outperformed Marcus Spears, he certainly hasn't played to the level of a dominant 3-4 DE like Luis Castillo or Richard Seymour.
If someone would sign Canty, I would take the #1 also. However, with that said, I would also retain Fergy and slide J-Rat over to the void left by Canty. Bowen and Hatcher would then back up the positions. I would hate to lose a guy like Canty, but I don't think the play of our d-line would drop off that much. Keep in mind that we also would save outselves from another big contract extension, giving us needed cap space for guys like D-Ware and Newman that will need costly extensions.
Also, extra pick would certainly give us a lot of options in the draft. Packing two firsts to assure ourselves a top playmaker like DRC or Mendenhall is one thought.
With that said, I don't expect any teams to pony up a #1 and a big contract to get Canty. He's an above average player, but not a great player (IMO).

Agreement on Canty
People tend to overstate his value. He's a good player who will continue to get better and has breakout potential, but he's not a star. If any team offered him a contract, I'd take that pick and emerge with a smile on my face.
In Ferg's case, however... I'm not sure. He's only got one year left after this one, right? Assuming that he can still play like Fergie, I wouldn't let him go for anything less than a third round selection. He's an excellent run stopper and adds to our tremendous depth on the D-Line, as well as bringing the often overrated but always necessary veteran leadership. We can't let Parcells pilfer us of the players he wants for fifty cents on the dollar unless he's also willing to give something up for the guys who WE aren't happy with (Spears, Carpenter).

I disagree
Canty does alot of things that don't show up on his stat sheet.Canty is a Solid run stuffer and stepped up his game this year in regards to pressuring the QB.
If you stick bowen in canty's place...You'll notice the difference.Trust me...If we lose canty for a 1st...what do we get...another underachieving DE(insert spears joke here)?
It would be a mistake to let a steadily improving chris canty get away!

I'm with True
There has been a drastic empirical improvement in Canty's play from the beginning of the season till the end. It would be a shame to lose him at this point just as he is establishing himself.
Sad to say, the Spears' joke is on us. Oh well, maybe this year.

Agreed as well
I don't want to lose Canty, but I doubt many teams will fork over a 1st to sign him. He's a 3-4 DE, so it's already a niche position, and I'm not sure how many 3-4 teams need a DE and are in a position to give up a first rounder to get one.

disagree...he's just as good as a 4-3 DT....
don't think for a minute he won't get interest....that clown Kelly in Oakland just got 50+ million...and he's no Canty...He certainly has the size and ability to be an effective DT in a 4-3 system...If he was in this years draft, he'd go in the top 20......think of that...

I'd take Bryant over Fergie no problem...
and gain a 3rd to 6th rounder...sure thing...get that outrageous slary off our roster...I for one think we really missed out by not getting 28 year old, Kris Jenkins of Carolina....a 340lbs moster in the middle....for a 3rd & 5th....and his cap cost was under 3 million for '8....
