Is it a coincidence the mid-major teams seeded eight or lower are playing other mid-major teams in the first round? The match-ups:
#5 Drake vs #12 Western Kentucky
#3 Xavier vs #14 Georgia
#7 Butler vs #10 South Alabama
#8 UNLV vs #9 Kent State
#7 Gonzaga vs #10 Davidson
#8 BYU vs #9 Texas A&M
BYU is the only team playing a legitimate BCS conference team in the first round of the tournament.
What about Georgia? The story of Georgia winning three games in two days is fantastic, but it prevents a mid-major team the opportunity to compete against the best in the top conferences. Xavier received the biggest no-win situation facing a team with no business reaching the tournament. If Xavier wins, it's expected because the Georgia basketball team should be watching football spring practice. If Xavier loses, it's one more point to say the mid-major schools don't deserve a decent seeding in the tourney.
The other match-ups are mid-major team against mid-major team. It's apparent the NCAA committee is trying to eliminate the “Cinderella” teams as soon as possible. Allow them to eliminate each other and defeat no BCS schools in the process.
The committee just ruined half the fun of March Madness. These teams deserve the opportunity to prove they can compete on the largest stage. Why didn't we see these games?
#5 Clemson vs #12 Western Kentucky
#7 West Virginia vs #10 South Alabama
#8 Indiana vs #9 Kent State
#7 Miami(Fl) vs #10 Davidson
#5 Drake vs #12 Villanova
#8 UNLV vs #9 Arkansas
These would have been great games for major conference teams to eliminate the mid-major teams from invading the tournament any further. Unfortunately four of these teams won't have the opportunity to prove their worth against Goliath. Instead we will witness David vs David in the first round. Is this the scenario we dream about during the first week of the tournament?
