CLEVELAND -- Western Michigan's Tiera DeLaHoussaye was named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week on March 13, 2008.
DeLaHoussaye (basketball, guard, Jr., 3.32, nursing, Detroit, Mich.) continued to lead the Broncos in their first round Kraft MAC Tournament victory against Akron, becoming the school's all-time single-season assist leader with 243 after adding 11 assists with just one turnover on Sunday March 9. DeLaHoussaye broke the previous record of 236 set in 1987. With 11 assists, DeLaHoussaye grabbed the third-highest total number of assists in a MAC tournament game. DeLaHoussaye also recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 10 points against Akron. DeLaHoussaye was named First Team All-Mid-American Conference along with Defensive Player of the Year on Saturday after leading the MAC in steals for the second-straight season, averaging 3.4 per game (10th best in the country.) DeLaHoussaye turned many of those steals into points, passing out a MAC-best 7.8 assists per game, which ranks third best in the nation.
This is DeLaHoussaye's first scholar-athlete award to go along with her six player of the week awarded to her this season.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
