As the trade deadline approaches, there is a lot of discussion about the holes each team in the pennant race needs to fill. The big question is, who will step up and fill their holes?

The teams that are sellers in this market have gotten smart and are asking for a king’s ransom for their available players. Why not? If you know that the Red Sox, Yankees, Mets, and Braves are willing to pay, then why not set the prices high? It sounds like good business to me.

But are the buyers willing to pay the price?. Here are some potential patches for those holes.

* Mark Teixeira - The Rangers have a deal in place to move Teixeira to the Braves(pending physicals). The Braves get a good young first baseman to help the offense and take pressure off of Andruw Jones. The Braves did pay the price trading Jarrod Saltalamacchia, there prized young catcher, and two other prospects. This is the one major deal that gets done at the deadline.

* Octavio Dotel - The Royals closer is rumored to be going to any team within 10 games of their division lead. He is a hot commodity, but he wants an extension with Kansas City. I heard this morning, though, that the Mariners have become the favorite to land Dotel. He will be a great right-handed setup man for JJ Putz in Seattle.

* Jermaine Dye - Rumor is the Red Sox and the M’s have had discussions with the White Sox about the struggling slugger. It sounds like the price is a little too high, so I believe Dye will remain a White Sox player.

* Eric Gagne - The former all-world closer has found a little bit of a groove and has become a wanted man. Gagne will probably end up with the Red Sox or Yankees before tomorrow’s deadline.

These are the hot guys up for trade. But if these are the only deals made, there will still be a bunch of contending team with holes. The Angels are short on starting pitching and could use protection for Vlad. The Mariners starting pitching is average but not outstanding. The Tigers need bullpen help. The Cubs may be a little short on offense. This is going to be an interesting race. The teams that can plug the holes in their systems will be the teams that come out on top.

Teixeira to Braves. The Braves also stepped in and got Dotel.

Eric Gagne did wind up with the Red Sox.

Jermaine Dye, along with Miguel Tejada, is trying to clear waivers so that he can be traded.
