Video: Wild Hockey Fight Featuring Son of Patrick Roy
Hockey fights are nice, but goalie fights are even better.
A particularly nasty goalie scrum took place in a game between the Quebec Remparts and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in something called the QMJHL (is that a league or an eye-chart?) on Saturday. What made it even better was that one of the two combatants was Jonathan Roy, son of legendary NHL goalie Patrick Roy.
The teams were already rumbling all over the ice when Jonathan, who plays for Quebec, decided to take the gloves off and go after Chicoutimi goalie Bobby Nadeau. The officials initially held Roy back, but he’s a persistent bugger, and eventually he got to Nadeau and began delivering the beatdown.
But wait, it gets better. According to reports, the reason Jonathan was so hell-bent on getting to Nadeau was that his father Patrick, the head coach of Quebec, gave him explicit orders to pound Nadeau’s head in. No one wants to disappoint their father.
The carnage was of course all captured on video.
As we see, when Jonathan got done with Nadeau, he then went after another player. Unfortunately for Quebec, fighting doesn’t equal goals - they ended up losing the game 10-1.

Looked like pre-meditated assault to me. Junior Hockey and the goalie wearing 60 pounds of protective trys to be a tough guy? I say charge him and a lesson will be learned. Do nothing and it is just another privileged child of the wealthy acting out.

Patrick Roy was our goalie in Denver for years and brought great success to the Avalanche. He did have a domestic violence incident with police hauling him from their home. But, this “fight” of his kid is pitiful. One, the other goalie did nothing to provoke Jonathon, at least on this tape. Two, the kid is not a very good goaltender, at least based on this W-L record. Three, if he can’t cool off skating the length of the ice and still proceeds to pummel the other goalie he does not belong in the game of hockey. This tape indicates his future: as a goon toiling in the lower ranks of hockey until he is washed up. Which probably will not take many years.

Well, I can’t say I support kids fighting, but at the pro or semi pro level fighting is an exciting part of the game. It doesn’t happen often that the goalies get involved, but when it does, it gest the crowd up on its feet. Even more so than just a plain fight. If you really like this particular aspect of the game, here’s a link to my top 12 goalie fights. http://www.heathensonline.com/2008/03/26/better-than-hockey-fights-the-top-12-hockey-goalie-fights/
