Philadelphia Phillies Report by Ari Bluestein - 8/17/08

Posted by: aricoaster161 on 8/17/2008

The only way the Phillies latest West Coast trip could have been more disappointing was if they lost all seven games this week. Luckily, the Phillies were able to defeat the Padres twice this weekend, mainly because of the bat of Pat Burrell, after losing all four games to the now-National League West leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers series showed the Phillies’ true colors and the one character flaw that this team has: Inconsistency. The word inconsistency represents a number of aspects of the Phillies lack of performance on the field.

The biggest problem for the Phillies during the second half of the season has certainly been the inconsistency of the offense. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, the two guys at the top of the Phillies lineup, have not been getting on base on a somewhat consistent basis. This does not allow guys like Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell to drive in runs. Now that I mention those three sluggers, they have been inconsistent as well.

In addition, the fact that the Phillies either start hot with the bats and then fade at the end, or vice versa, adds another aspect to the team’s inconsistency. The series against the Dodgers showed proof of this. In game one, the Phillies did not score until late with a 9th inning rally and in games two and three they scored early but did not score in the final six innings of each game.

Also, when the Phillies hit, they don’t pitch well. When they pitch well, they don’t hit. Then, if the starting pitching does well, the bullpen blows the game. These again are all aspects of the Phillies inconsistency.

The Dodgers series was once again proof positive of this.

With the Phillies leading 6-4 in the 8th inning in game three, Chad Durbin, who has had a good season for the Phils, blew the lead just like he did the night before. Then, in both game two and game three, the Dodgers got a walk-off hit off the Phillies bullpen. In both those game, the Phillies got solid starting pitching from Cole Hamels and Joe Blanton, respectively, and the Phillies got early runs from the offense.

But the offense faded and the Dodgers kept fighting, and ultimately led to an four-game series sweep.

Despite a continued lack of hitting, the Phillies were able to pull out two games in a three-game weekend series against the San Diego Padres, largely because of solid starting pitching and the “bat of Pat.”

In game one, Pat Burrell’s solo home run accounted for the game’s only run as the Phillies won 1-0 behind the ageless arm of Jamie Moyer. In game two, starting pitcher Kyle Kendrick squandered a 3-1 lead in the 4th inning with giving up five runs, all with two outs in the inning. The Phillies went on to lose that game by a score of 8-3.

In the rubber match of the three-game set, Cole Hamels finally got a win, his first since July 3rd. Hamels pitched a brilliant 8 innings and only gave up one earned run with the Phillies winning by a final score of 2-1. Burrell hit another solo homer and ultimately was the deciding run.

If the Phillies would like to remain in contention, the offense needs to pick up the hitting. There is no doubt in any baseball fan’s mind that this is the main reason why the Phillies have now fallen out of 1st place in the National League East division. As it currently stands, the Phils are two games behind the 1st place Mets and the 3rd place Florida Marlins are sitting at 4 ˝ games back and are slowly starting to fade out from the playoff picture.

The bullpen seems to be getting a little tired. As we mentioned, Durbin blew two leads in the Dodgers series this past week, something he would not have done earlier in the season. Left-handed reliever J.C. Romero looks tired and closer Brad Lidge has already had some shoulder problems.

The starting rotation has been holding its’ own with Moyer, Hamels and Myers all pitching very solid. Kendrick is starting to be a little inconsistent (adding another aspect of the Phillies inconsistency) and Blanton has been good for the most part.

The key to all this once again is the offense. Also, getting good offense and good pitching, from both the starters and the relievers, in the same game is even more important. The Phillies need to find a way to put it all together and get wins.

If the Phils offense doesn’t hit and the pitching gives up a ton of runs during a particular game, then Phils fans can live with that. But it all comes down to who has the highest number in the wins column after game 162. In order to have the most out of all the teams in the NL East division, the Phillies need turn the word “inconsistency” into “consistency.” The entire team needs to pull together and find ways to win ball games.

No better time to start getting some wins with a three-game home series against the NL East cellar-dwelling Washington Nationals. Then, the Phils have a chance for some revenge against those red-hot Dodgers as the team from “La La Land” comes to the City of Brotherly Love for a four-game series.

After this week, it doesn’t get any easier for the Phillies as they take on the NL East-leading New York Mets for two games at home and then they travel to Chicago take on the National League-leading Cubs.

Considering the extremely disappointing West Coast trip, the Phillies could certainly use a sweep against the Nationals.

English Premier League Preview 1st-5th Place

Posted by: tlrules5 on 8/15/2008

In the final installment of the English Premier League preview we crown our projected Premier League champion, and just for fun, also take a look at some of England's lower leagues for promotion and relegation candidates.

5. Tottenham Hotspur- Tottenham is getting a lot of publicity as the team from outside of the "Big Four" with the best chance of breaking in. But after a terrible start to last season, Martin Jol was sacked and Spurs struggled to an 11th place finish in the league, although they did win some silverware by bringing home the Carling Cup. Expectations are high once again for Tottenham, as manager Juande Ramos has made some exciting signings, none more so than Luka Modric, an exciting playmaking midfielder. The team has also signed Giovani dos Santos from Barcelona, Heurelo Gomes from PSV Eindhoven, and David Bentley from Blackburn. Despite the loss of Robbie Keane to Liverpool, Tottenham should be a very exciting team to watch provided they also hold onto striker Dimitar Berbatov, who is being courted by many big-time clubs. While I don't think Tottenham will be able to break into the top-four, Spurs may be the most exciting team to watch in the Premier League this season.

4. Arsenal- The youth movement continues for "The Professor" Arsene Wenger and the Gunners as several young players have been brought in, while some veterans have hit the road. The most promising newcomer is Samir Nasri, a 20-year-old midfielder signed from French club Marseille. Nasri has been called "the new Zidane," and if he is able to live up to that reputation, will be a great signing for the club. The Gunners also brought in 17-year-old Aaron Ramsey from Championship club Cardiff. Ramsey may not be ready for first-team football yet but may have to be pressed into action because of the departures of Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb, and Gilberto Silva. Because of these departures, I feel the Gunners will take a step back this season, after finishing in 3rd, just 7 points behind title winners Manchester United last season.

3. Liverpool- Last season has to be branded as a disappointment for the Reds as they limped home to a fourth-place finish and failed to win any silverware. However, one bright spot was the success of Fernando Torres, who is regarded as possibly the best striker in the world. Liverpool's biggest signing in this off-season is the acquisition of striker Robbie Keane from Tottenham. A Torres/Keane combination can be truly deadly up front for the Reds, along with the aggressive play of attacking midfielder Steven Gerrard. The weakness for Liverpool remains to be on the right and left sides. While signing Phillip Degen and Andrea Dossena to play the right and left back spots respectively, Liverpool lacks creativity in the midfield, and specifically on the wings. The Reds will hope some combination of Ryan Babel, Jermaine Pennant, Dirk Kuyt, and Yossi Benayoun can get the job done on the wings. It is confusing why manager Rafael Benitez does not sacrifice one of his holding midfielders in place of a dynamic winger. As long as Benitez does not go crazy with his rotation policy, the Reds should be able to be closer to winning the title, but will likely fall about 10 points short.

2. Chelsea- After a season which featured two managers, a defeat in the Carling Cup final to London rivals Tottenham, failing to win the Premier League title by just two points, and losing out to Manchester United in the Champions League final in penalties, Chelsea is desperately looking for redemption. The Blues have a new manager in Luis Felipe Scolari, who previously managed Portugal's national team . Scolari does not have any club management experience, which could be a problem early on for Chelsea. The club has not been as ambitious with its signings as anticipated, as they have only brought in two new faces to this point. While most of the important squad players return, the big question is whether they've done enough to get themselves past Manchester United. In my mind they haven't, but much like last year, it should be one hell of a race to the finish.

1. Manchester United- Sir Alex Ferguson found a way to win yet another title last season to further cement his legacy as a legendary manager. While it will not be an easy task to repeat, Ferguson was able to convince star midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Manchester United instead of bolting for Real Madrid. Ronaldo scored 42 goals last season, including 31 in the Premier League. Those numbers are truly irreplaceable by any one player. While United has not brought in any new players of note, the only player they've lost who saw any significant time last season is defender Gerard Pique who left for Barcelona. However, I would expect United to try and make a deal to bring a striker in, the club has been rumored to be interested in Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov. While Chelsea will be breathing down their necks, I feel Ferguson and the Red Devils have enough strength and composure to repeat as Premier League champions.

Before the English soccer preview comes to a close, here's a look at the teams I expect to be promoted, in the promotion playoffs, and relegated from the Championship through League Two.

Coca Cola Championship
Automatic Promotion: Birmingham, Wolverhampton
Promotion Playoffs: Crystal Palace, QPR, Reading, Sheffield United
Promotion Playoff Winner: Crystal Palace
Relegated: Doncaster, Southampton, Blackpool

Coca Cola League One
Automatic Promotion: Leicester, Leeds
Promotion Playoffs: Oldham, Southend, Brighton, Tranmere
Promotion Playoff Winner: Southend
Relegated: Cheltenham, Peterborough, Hereford, Yeovil

Coca Cola League Two
Automatic Promotion: Shrewsbury, Gillingham, Darlington
Promotion Playoffs: Wycombe, Bradford, Bury, Port Vale
Promotion Playoff Winner: Port Vale

Well, that wraps up the English Premier League (and lower leagues) preview, here's to another exciting season!

I'll be back blogging again in the coming weeks with a preview of the 2008 NFL season.

English Premier League Preview 6-10th Place

Posted by: tlrules5 on 8/14/2008

Its time for the third installment in the four-part English Premier League season preview. Today we take a look at the teams that will make up the top half of the middle part of the table.

10. Newcastle United- Last season turned out to be much like a script that would be used in one of the Back to the Future movies. Kevin Keegan returned to the sport after several years away to manage the Magpies, with mixed results. After a sluggish start, Newcastle made some late progress last season. However, these fans always expect results, and without more money being spent to bring in players, the results will not come. Keegan has a paper-thin squad, and with owner Mike Ashley claiming the club is in debt, don't expect much more money to be spent by the club. In turn, a finish right smack in the middle of the table should be looked at as a success.

9. Manchester City- You would be hard pressed to find a club thats been through a bigger roller coaster ride than Manchester City over the past year or so. The club comes off of its best ever Premier League finish, yet former manager Sven Goran Eriksson was sacked after just one season at the club. The fans supported Eriksson, and will need to support new manager Mark Hughes who comes over from Blackburn. The ownership situation is very cloudy with Thaskin Shinawatra in exile from his native Thailand, where he is facing many criminal charges. The transfer of Brazilian striker Jo was already made before the ownership picture became cloudy, and this acquisition should help some of the goalscoring problems City had last season. However, it is hard to see the club making much progress with all of the uncertainty surrounding it.

8. Everton- Coming off of a season where the club finished in 5th place, one would think that the club would be a desirable place to land. But as yet another club facing ownership uncertainty, Everton has not brought in any new faces to this point for the upcoming season. While at the same time, key players like Lee Carsley, Manuel Fernandes, and Andy Johnson have moved on from the club. The Toffees have struggled in the pre-season, and that should be expected to continue into the regular season with the lack of depth the squad has. For the first time in the last few seasons, Everton cannot be regarded as the team most likely to break into the top-four, and this should be a concern to the fans on the Blue end of Merseyside.

7. Portsmouth- The transformation of Pompey from constant relegation fodder to a team that competes for European places has been nothing short of brilliant. Most of the credit should go to Harry Redknapp, who has cemented his legacy as a manager who gets the very most he can with the resources he's given. While dynamic attacking midfielder Sulley Muntari has moved on to Italian giants Inter Milan, Redknapp has brought in striker Peter Crouch from Liverpool, as well as young defender Younes Kaboul from Tottenham. Last season's FA Cup winners should continue their climb up the ranks of the Premier League, and have a very good chance of bettering last season's 8th place league finish.

6. Aston Villa- After being one of the surprise teams in the Premier League last season, expectations are higher this season for the Villans. One major plus for Villa is the fact that it looks like they will hold off league rivals Liverpool and be able to hold onto team captain Gareth Barry, as Liverpool refuse to reach manager Martin O'Neill's valuation of the player. O'Neill made one of the shrewdest moves of the summer by signing Steve Sidwell away from Chelsea. Sidwell could be a key member of the midfield for Aston Villa along with Barry. The club has also upgraded their defense with the signings of Nicky Shorey, Luke Young, and Carlos Cuellar, along with goalkeeper Brad Friedel. Despite all of these positives, it will be very difficult for Aston Villa to finish any higher than 6th, which is where they ended up in the league table at the end of last season.

Coming up on Fri. night... The Top-5 teams... along with predictions on what teams will be promoted and relegated in the Championship, League One, and League Two!

English Premier League Preview 11-15th Place

Posted by: tlrules5 on 8/13/2008

The Premier League preview continues with a look at the teams that will make up the lower end of the middle of the Premier League table.

15. Bolton- After a good second half run propelled to the Wanderers to safety last year, Gary Megson has spent some money to try and keep Bolton out of the relegation scrap this season. Bolton broke their transfer record when they brought in Swedish striker Johan Elmander. The club also spent money on young defensive midfielder Fabrice Muamaba from Birmingham. While several veteran players were let go, most of those players seemed to be past their prime and letting them loose seems to be good business. While a huge improvement should not be expected, this team should have enough goals in them to stay a bit clearer of the relegation fight this season.

14. Sunderland- After finally being able to preserve their Premier League status for more than one season, the Black Cats are hoping to have staying power in the league. Sunderland has the potential to be a big club, their stadium is one of the largest in the Premier League, and it seems that there is money to spend at the club. Manager Roy Keane seems to have decided to raid Tottenham this off-season, acquiring three players from Spurs this off-season. Scoring goals was a problem for Sunderland last season, as they averaged just under 1 goal per game last season. They will hope to improve on that this season, while not sacrificing the good defensive play which kept them in the Premier League last season. While a modest improvement should not be expected, this team should easily be good enough to survive for another season in the Premier League.

13. Blackburn- It will be a season of transition for the Rovers, who come off of a 7th place finish last season. However, a big change for Blackburn will be bringing in new manager Paul Ince, who has no managerial experience above Coca Cola League Two. While Ince won a title with MK Dons in League Two, that does not always translate to the Premier League immediately. Former manager Mark Hughes employed a direct and tough style, and often overachieved with his squads at Blackburn. The biggest loss player-wise for Blackburn was English international David Bentley signing with Tottenham. To this point, Blackburn has not spent the money they made on that transfer, and it is unclear whether Ince will be able to bring in the type of targets he wants. However, the spine of this squad remains, and while this team should have no problem avoiding relegation, this will probably be looked upon as a down season compared to recent seasons for the Rovers.

12. Wigan Athletic- Wigan was another team that looked sure to be relegated during the first half of the season, that was until bringing in manager Steve Bruce around the middle of the season. Bruce improved the club's fortunes dramatically and easily kept the club away from the relegation zone with a 14th place league finish. Bruce has strengthened his squad with with four very nice signings, including Daniel de Ridder, Oliver Kapo, Lee Cattermole, along with loan signing Amr Zaki, who many expect to be a revelation at the Premier League level. As long as goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is able to escape the injury bug for a second consecutive season, Wigan should be able to improve on last season's results and easily secure a fifth consecutive season playing in the Premier League.

11. West Ham United- The Hammers improved themselves from 17th place to 10th last season, but despite that improvement their fans were left a bit dissatisfied. It seemed like the Hammers basically mailed in the last ten games or so of their season. Because of that, there is a lot of speculation surrounding the future of manager Alan Curbishley, which is being fueled by the lack of transfer activity at the club. The biggest problem for West Ham is the fact that the amount of money the team spends in salary is close to the level of the teams that make up the "Big Four" of the Premier League. It is clear that a mid-table finish is not a good return on that investment. However, because of the constant injury problems that dog many of West Ham's players, a finish any higher than the middle of the table seems very unlikely.

Coming up on Thurs. night... Premier League positions 10th-6th

English Premier League Preview 16-20th Place

Posted by: tlrules5 on 8/12/2008

With the English Premier League kicking off their season on Saturday, I thought I would do a series of articles previewing the upcoming season for what is arguably the most popular soccer league in the world. Each day I will reveal my predictions for five teams, starting at the bottom, until eventually crowning a predicted champion later this week.

20. Stoke City- The biggest question for this club is where are the goals going to come from? Expect Stoke to play a very direct, long-ball type of style. They have a lot of size up front, but save for Dave Kitson, very little Premier League experience. Stoke was able to win promotion from the Coca Cola Championship last season because of their very stingy defense. Unfortunately for Stoke, there's a big difference stopping Ronaldo and Torres in the Premier League compared to the likes of Kevin Phillips and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake in the Championship. While their season won't end up as bad as Derby County's last season, Stoke will certainly take their lumps in the Premier League and are sure to be relegated back to the Championship.

19. Hull City- After an improbable run towards promotion via the Championship playoffs, Hull will find the road difficult in the Premier League. Unlike Stoke, Hull has decided to make several low-money signings instead of signing 2 players for significant money. Hull's approach will likely work out better, as Phil Brown has made some solid signings in Manchester City's Geovanni, Middlesbrough's George Boateng, and Fulham's Tony Warner. However, I see defense being a problem for Hull, and while they have a better chance than Stoke, Hull will have a very difficult time avoiding relegation.

18. Middlesbrough- A team that has been struggling in the middle of the table the last few seasons, I think Middlesbrough will take another step backwards this season. Its really a shame as well, because the club has a few really good players in David Wheater, Stewart Downing, and Alfonso Alves. However, the club has made just two signings, neither of which have been of the exciting variety. Meanwhile, they have failed to replace goaltender Mark Schwarzer, who had a great 11-year run with the club. They have also lost some of the depth in their squad by allowing George Boateng, Luke Young, and Lee Cattermole go. Those three players were typically starters last season, and will be missed. I just don't see this team having the depth to stay in this league, especially if there is any sort of injury to Alves during the season. I see Gareth Southgate being sacked, and this club being relegated to the Championship.

17. Fulham- After the ultimate "great escape" last year to clinch survival in the Premier League, Fulham is hoping for an easier road this season. Roy Hodgson will be in charge of the club from the start, and sure has made his share of changes. At least 11 new players will hit the pitch for the Cottagers this season, while 15 players from last year's squad are gone. The net result of this will be another relegation scrap. Although the goaltending has been upgraded for the club, spending a lot of money to bring in the injury-prone Andy Johnson to play up front has to be looked at as a huge risk. I feel Bobby Zamora and Zoltan Gera were the most astute signings of the summer by Hodgson, and a leader like Gera should be enough to steer Fulham clear of relegation... barely.

16. West Bromwich Albion- West Brom has been regarded as the most exciting team in the Championship over the last couple of seasons. After winning the Coca Cola Championship, they get to test their skills in the Premier League once again. The best off-season signing for the Baggies came in the form of former Liverpool goaltender Scott Carson. Getting Carson at the bargain price of 4 million pounds could prove to be an enormous signing for manager Tony Mowbray. While not great players, Luke Moore and Roman Bednar should be an adequate pair of strikers for the club. Teams promoted from the Championship that have played attacking football seem to have more success compared to long-ball sides who typically find themselves right back in the Championship. I feel because of sheer talent, along with their style of play, that West Brom will survive to play in the Premier League again in 2009-2010.

Coming on Wed. night... 11-15th place.

Philadelphia Phillies Report by Ari Bluestein

Posted by: aricoaster161 on 8/10/2008

An ugly week ends with an ugly win for the Phillies. The Phillies started this week with a very important three-game series with an NL East division rival, the Florida Marlins. The series did not start out too well for the Phils with an 8-2 loss, where the two runs were on a phantom two-run home run by Shane Victorino that was a missed call by the umpire crew. The next day showed some promise as the Phils won by a score of 5-0. But then the Phillies bats went silent once again the following day and were shut out 3-0.

The next night, the opener of the weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, proved to be another day of silence at the plate for the Phillies. In the 2-0, 12-inning loss the Phillies had piled up a 23-inning scoreless streak. Remember, this is a team that scored 20 runs in a game twice this season.

Followed by a solid 4-2 win last night, the Phillies pulled out a 6-3 victory today in ugly fashion. The only legitimate runs came in the 7th inning when catcher Carlos Ruiz started the inning with a double and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs hit a double down the left-field line to tie the game at 3-3. After unproductive at-bats by Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino, second baseman Chase Utley got an inside fastball to drive and he did just that cracking a two-run home run to give the Phillies for good.

Looking at the NL East standings at the end of this weekend of baseball, the Phillies now have a two game lead over the New York Mets and a two-and-a-half game lead over the Florida Marlins.

Now looking ahead to this week’s schedule, the Phillies have their last West Coast road trip of the year with four games against Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers and three games against the NL West division cellar dwelling San Diego Padres. The four-gamer against the Dodgers will be tough, so let’s hope for a split. Then, I would hope the Phils take at least two out of three against the lowly Padres.

The Florida Marlins have a very tough schedule this week with a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals followed by a three-game series against the NL Central division-leading Chicago Cubs. However, the Marlins are playing at home in Miami, so that could give them an advantage.

On the other hand, the New York Mets have a fairly easy schedule this week starting with a make-up game against the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow afternoon. Then, the Mets travel to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Nationals then they go to Pittsburgh to battle the Pirates next weekend.

When I look at the Phillies team, I see somewhat of an enigma. With hitters like Rollins, Utley, Ryan Howard, and Pat Burrell, why are they not scoring runs? How is it possible that all these superstars are struggling at the same time? Howard has been hitting well as of late, but struggled in the Pirates series, and Utley got his first hit of the Pirates series with that game-winning two-run bomb today.

Burrell has not had a hit over his last four games and except for his 4-for-4 performance yesterday against the Pirates, Rollins has not hit well either.

All season we were worried about the starting pitching and if the bullpen would hold up. Now, all of a sudden, the tables have turned and the offense is under scrutiny.

If you watched the Phillies 7th inning in today’s game, the Phillies had Greg Dobbs on 3rd base with no outs and the game was tied at 3-3. Rollins grounded out and then Victorino flew out to shallow left-field. There are two opportunities that the Phillies did not cash in on to get the winning run to the plate. Luckily, Utley got a fastball middle-in to drive out of the park and give the Phillies the win.

But overall, the offense is a big concern. Pitching has been very solid. The bullpen is continuing to perform well for the most part. Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin, Brad Lidge and J.C. Romero have all pitched very well. And the addition of left-hander Scott Eyre (from the Chicago Cubs) will definitely give manager Charlie Manuel another weapon late in the game. In fact, Eyre’s first appearance was this afternoon and he came in, got a left-handed batter out and ended up getting the victory.

Starting pitching is really starting to look good. Cole Hamels had a good start this week after a tough couple of starts. Jamie “the ageless wonder” Moyer and Kyle “bend don’t break” Kendrick continues to keep the Phils in games. The two big questions marks had been newly acquired Joe Blanton and Brett Myers. But Myers and Blanton have both pitched very well over the last two weeks.

If the offense can turn it around and the pitching continues to stay solid, the Phillies will remain in the NL East race until the end. But it is extremely important for the Phillies to beat the Mets and the Marlins head-to-head from here on out if they want to win the NL East division title.
