My Conversation with Maurice Sutton

Sutton

This conversation took place over the phone with Maurice in a loud airport….nevertheless, his positive feelings about the Cats were obvious:

What is your status right now in your recruitment?

I am going to take a visit in two weeks to Kentucky when I go there for the Derby Classic. I have always loved Kentucky and I am so excited to get to go there and visit. They are right now on my list along with Boston College, Villanova, Seton Hall, North Carolina State and Lasalle.

What is it you like about Kentucky?

I love the winning tradition that the school has and I really love the Coach. He works hard and so do I. I also really like the fan support. I hear they get a lot of people there for every game and I want to be a part of that.

How long have you known Coach Gillispie and how long has he been recruiting you?

I have known him since he began recruiting me at the Elite Camp they had there in the summer. I know that he is a winning coach and that is all that he is about.

What do you know about the Kentucky program and the state?

The thing that sticks out is the fans. I know the fans just love Kentucky. I hear they love horse racing and Kentucky basketball.

Do you have a top choice right now?

Kentucky is my top choice right now, definitely.

Do you know any of the players on the Kentucky team at this point?

I know Ramon Harris. He was a player at that Elite Camp and he taught me a few things there that really helped. When I was in Kentucky, he came and saw one of my high school games and I really thought that was a cool thing to do.

When do you think you will make a choice on your school?

Probably really soon, after I take the last visits.

Before speaking with Maurice, I talked with his Coach Lou Howard. Here are two important things he said.

Can you describe Maurice’s game? Does he play like anyone in particular?

He’s real long like Tayshaun Prince. He likes to face up to the basket, run the floor and he can block a lot of shots. He is a good shooter from about 15-17 feet in and he likes that range.

Does Maurice have an offer right from Kentucky right now?

I am not real sure to be honest. I do know that if he doesnt have an offer, it is really, really close.

So there you go….Maurice Sutton….a kid that definitely is very interested in joining the Kentucky nation.

    First!

  2. Chuck Norris Says:

Plays like Tayshaun, that is all I needed to hear.

  3. riddle32 Says:

it said he has length like tayshaun not plays like him.. lol

  4. GoCats2010 Says:

Plays like Tay while McCoy pays like Tony Parker…PUH-lease. He may be good (you don’t suck and almost average a tripe double), but I hate it when players out of high school are compared to college and NCAA players. Tay was one of UK’s finest EVER. Parker is an elite NBA pg. People that say things like that are full of crap.

  5. GoCats2010 Says:

true, length, my bad. but still, maybe say he has length like Stevenson

  6. riddle32 Says:

what ever happend to the boy from new mexico jeff taylor… i heard he was averageing 31 and 16 idc where you play those are bad ass numbers we could use next yr

  7. floorgeneral22 Says:

He has crossed us off his list I think after Galloway committed
he is down to Gonzaga, Vandy, and Utah I think

  8. riddle32 Says:

ok thanks cause yea i was wanderin if he still had us on his list

  9. riddle32 Says:

idk that much about galloway… hows he suppose to be?

  10. Rajay333 Says:

As a PG, Galloway averaged 8.8 assists/game, the highest in JUCO, plus 8 ppg. He averaged less than 22 minutes a game, so pretty fantastic numbers. Originally recruited by USC 2 years ago. Clyde wanted him over Appleton, who was generally considered the top PG in JUCO, and had UK #1 on his list.

  11. riddle32 Says:

yea i guess clyde is gunna use him at point then w/ those numbers lol.. but i heard were pretty much a lock wit josh harrellson now

  12. coreyy12 Says:

how many scholarships do we have left

  13. coreyy12 Says:

it seems lik billy is gettin a lot oif interest
    y can’t he do that with All-Americans

  14. coreyy12 Says:

    *of

  15. riddle32 Says:

corey.. hes been here for maybe a yr and hes already had 2.. 1 left.. and i know for sure hes got at least a dozen 5stars hes lookin at for 09, just wait till hes had a whole yr to recruit we’ll be stacked wit All Americans

  16. riddle32 Says:

i think 2-3 schollys left btw

  17. coreyy12 Says:

it looks lik we r goin do get john wall in 2009
does anyone now if thats right

  18. riddle32 Says:

i aint heard any thing about it but i hope your right..

  19. Katwoman Says:

    16) What was your big prize for being 1st. Whay dp we have so many nerds on here. Damn

  20. Katwoman Says:

I hate when the kiddies r on here. See ya folks be back Monday when we can talk sports and the kids are in school. Bye for now.

  21. Ryan Says:

coreyy12, Darius Miller is a Parade All-American. DeAndre Liggins is a 5 star recruit ranked in the top 25. Galloway was regarded as having NBA potential coming out of HS whehn he signed with USC. I think Billy is doing a pretty good job recruiting. I have no idea why Liggina didn’t make an All-American team. Maybe because his grades aren’t All-American caliber is the only reason I can think of.

  22. Ryan Says:

    idea*

  23. coreyy12 Says:

i think billy should try his hardest on ater majok and paul mccoy, maurice sutton
i saw a video of ater majok he looks good
does anyone hav any info. on these guys

  24. Ryan Says:

    Liggins * I mean..ok I’ll shut up now

  25. riddle32 Says:

    22. i think your right

  26. TaterBall1 Says:

21# There are a lot of geeks on here. You just try and ignore them. I hope we can get 3 more recruits than have already committed. We need some players.

  27. riddle32 Says:

i think mccoy and harrellson first.. they said harrellson could come in and help immediately.. but sutton was a project… and aparently mccoy is like tony parker and we need a quick guard who can score so ill take him.. plus harrellson is alot bigger then sutton and could patterson out alot

  28. coreyy12 Says:

    i would rather have majok

  29. coreyy12 Says:

majok can go all game but harrelson gets tired to quickly

  30. Wildcat81 Says:

    27) Don’t get so rowed up. Im a nerd too! Just kidding, would not be caught dead posting 1st. lol

  31. riddle32 Says:

hell dude idc its the first time ive done it..

  32. riddle32 Says:

corey.. your right i guess but hell if clyde puts em in boot camp i bet he wont get tired easy lmao

  33. cobrecat Says:

Take all of them and sort out the scholarships and the players this summer, coach is getting big bucks to worry about this sort things. I’m ready for the season.

  34. ukhoopster Says:

I am trying to figure out the scholly situation.
I know coach and the staff have it figured out but
here may be some reasoning for going after so many recruits:
Porter, Carter, and Coury could go on academic schollies,
Mike Williams could be done here at UK. That gives us the
possibilty to have a total of 6-7 schollies avaliable for the 08
class with 3 being taken. Right now we are mentioned with
Flemmings, Harrellson, McCoy, Majok, Sutton I would think we will
try and get at least 2-3 of these players. What’s everyone
    else’s take on this?

  35. riddle32 Says:

34 thats what i thought but then i read this thing that said even if they go to academic schollys your only aloud to have 13 scholly players on the team even if there academic

  36. ukhoopster Says:

Ah ok thanks I appreciate the info #35 I wasn’t to sure
    how that all worked out.

  37. Ryan Says:

    You guys are geeks.

  38. riddle32 Says:

np man cause i had been wanderin the same thing but i think either way it goes clyde is gunna have us good players comin in next year and we should be pretty good

  39. riddle32 Says:

ryan wtf is ur problem how the hell u gunna call me a geek

  40. riddle32 Says:

myspace.com/timmyriddle go look at that n call me a geek

  41. Snowman Says:

Thanks for the interview, Matt. What stood out to me was the “likes to play facing the basket” comment. That’s neither good nor bad as far as I’m concerned but sounds more like a 4 than a traditional 5 FWIW.

JMO but I’d really like to sign Sutton depending on the other options. He may not help much for a year or two but could be really good later on given his size and reach. UK is going to have some kids that won’t play much in any season why not have a couple on the roster with some big upside? Plus I like the publicity of getting a DC area player, which is talent rich.

  42. ukhoopster Says:

No worries riddle32 must be some kid mad because he
    can’t comprehend the conversation!

  43. Ryan Says:

lol riddle takes offense so much at being called a geek that he has to prove himself to someone on the internet by posting his myspace…lmao.

  44. Ryan Says:

    40. Riddle, ok I looked at it…..geek.

  45. ukhoopster Says:

#41 I agree with you in the fact that I would not
mind signing Sutton either. He is tall 6-10/6-11 and
seems to have better hands and athleticism than Perry S.
He is from a very good talent rich D.C area. Most important he
said he wants to be a Cat! Now I understand he needs to add weight
since he is listed at 200-215 but we already have 2 tall bulky
centers which really do nothing in Carter and Williams. I will take
athletic tall skinny kids over bulky below the rim players any day of
    the week.

  46. riddle32 Says:

    ur right hoopster

  47. Ryan Says:

ukhoopster, you really didn’t just call Jared Carter “bulky” did you? That guy’s shoulder’s are so narrow and snap like a twig.

  48. riddle32 Says:

williams played one good game this yr he had like 5 and 4 he might have some potential but i dont think carters gunna do anything this yr
but even if mikes turns out alright i dought he’ll ever get us more then 8 a night…. so we might as well lose them and get some body who can do somthin good lol

  49. ukhoopster Says:

riddle32 I tend to agree with you on this but then you know some
others will be b!tching about how you can want a kid gone! Simple
to me a scholly should be earned like anything else not given out
like candy to anyone who wants one. If you do not fit the system
or you do not want to put in the work then it’s up to the coach
on who gets the schollies each year.

  50. DT in DC Says:

does anyone know if he’s playing in the DC High School All-star game? Would be a nice opportunity to see him play for me.

  51. riddle32 Says:

exactly hoopster i think the ones who didnt earn one this yr shouldnt come back next yr

  52. K-NOTH Says:

some of you guys need to learn how to spell. this is starting to look like a UofL board.

  53. K-NOTH Says:

here is a link for a great recruit pickup for the football team.

  54. thetruth Says:

I just wanna know where Rob Lock Junior is
