The New York Mets look like they may have begun to address the injury problems that are already striking their starting rotation. The team is on the verge of signing free-agent Claudio Vargas to a AAA minor league deal. According to Vargas agent, Bean Stringfellow, there were four teams showing interest in him and that the Mets are the favorite. I’m not sure how believable that statement actually is thou.

The Mets need some rotation help pretty bad. I was never sold on their rotation being a strength like many others said it was. Pedro Martinez is already out for an extended period of time and now Orlando Hernandez will have his right foot in a boot for at least two weeks. The Mets are so desperate now that Mike Pelfrey has become the 4th starter, with Nelson Figueroa rounding out the five.

If Vargas is officially signed, he should make a few starts at AAA to get himself into big league shape and stretch his arm out. Other options for the Mets could come from free agency or the minor leagues. Free agent wise you still have David Wells and Jeff Weaver on the market, not to intriguing, I know. Internally, they could call up Tony Armas Jr, Brian Stokes or Adam Bostick. Jason Vargas, no relation, was another option but he’s already out for at least three months after undergoing hip surgery.

Regardless, the Mets are already in trouble and in desperation mode for pitching. At least, they have a stud in Johan Santana that will help avoid any prolonged losing streaks. While also having two pitchers in Oliver Perez and John Maine who will each win at least 13 games a piece.
