A BTB challenge: You pick the best and worst draft picks in the history of the Dallas Cowboys
The NFL draft has grown in spectacle every year. What was once a simple ceremony has become sport's biggest event of the spring. NFL fans fill the void of the offseason by reading mock drafts and discussing the pros and cons of prospects across the country. The biggest draw of the draft is the feeling of the unknown; while each pick is the result of careful research it is far from a given they will develop into the player they are touted to be. Teams spend countless hours going through the tapes and files of hundreds of college players in an effort to narrow in on the best choices available. A team's future success is built through the draft; the New York Giants proved what a strong draft class can do for your team on the way to a Super Bowl victory.
As we approach this year's draft, the excitement seems a bit higher than normal. The Cowboys are solid from top to bottom but this years draft can add vital depth to a roster that has nary a glaring hole anywhere on it. The Cowboys need running backs and cornerbacks as a must and as luck would have it this year's draft class is deep at both. The feeling that the players drafted this year could give Dallas that one last nudge over the edge on the path to a championship has made the pressure to get things right the highest it's been in a long time.
In the early 90's the Cowboys built a dynasty through the draft, taking advantage of the plethora of picks acquired in the legendary Hershel Walker trade with Minnesota. NFL.com and the NFL Network named the 1991 and 1992 Dallas Cowboys draft classes the second best of all time. Those two drafts produced nine starters on the Cowboys' championship teams. The drafts leading up to the 1992 championship season was vital to the continued success of the Cowboys. Unfortunately the failure to sustain that success led to the disappointment of the latter half of the decade. The Cowboys are poised to enjoy similar success with the current roster and look to add the final pieces with this year's draft.
In anticipation of the upcoming draft Blogging the Boys will look back at the successes and failures of past draft classes. Instead of coming up with a list by myself though, I call upon the BTB community for the nominations. In the comments section, list which players you think are the biggest draft steals and worst disappointments in the history of the Cowboys. We will present a profile on the top five nominees in each category and the BTB community will then place their vote for the official best and worst of past Cowboys' drafts. The nomination ballots will close by noon on Monday.
Since it really takes a few years to make a final determination on whether a draft pick is a bust or not (I know that 90% of you immediately started writing Bobby Carpenter), we will limit the nominations to players drafted prior to the 2006 season.
You can view every draft pick in the history of the Cowboys here.

In recent years
2005 has to have been one of the best draft classes. With Ratliff, whose still has untapped potential, being the ultimate value pick there. 2004 was atrocious, besides finding value in the 7th round with Crayton. Most disappointing individual pick probably would have to be Roy Williams in 2002.
by quincyyyyy on Apr 5, 2008 9:17 PM CDT 0 recs
Actually,
Nate Jones and Jacques Reeves were pretty good value, too.
Reeves may have been a little loose on coverage this season, but I guarantee there have been few drafts in history where three seventh rounders have caught onto a team for multiple seasons from one draft.

Add Canty and MBIII
To value picks from that draft. We got Canty, a projected 1st rounder at the beginning of the college season, in the 4th, and MBIII in the 3rd has proven to his value as well.
Is there a year in Cowboys draft history that had so many value picks?

I think in a few years
2005 will be regarded as one of the best draft classes ever, but ONLY if the Cowboys win a Super Bowl. Nearly every player picked in that draft has made significant contributions to the team, something that VERY rarely happens at all.

best and worst picks in team history
best pick has to be Bullet Bob Hayes taken in Rd 7 in 1964. Revolutionized the passing game into what we see today.
worst pick IMO is Danny Noonan in 1987. The 12th pick in the 1987 draft never materialzed into the pro bowl player he should have been for a top 15 pick.
by Terry on Apr 5, 2008 10:02 PM CDT 0 recs
Best and worst.
Best:
How about Leon Lett in the seventh round. (Larry Brown 12th round that year also)
Worst:
Well the worst use of a draft pick would have to be the 2 we spent on Galloway, but the worst actual pick maybe David LaFluer.
by GloryDayz88 on Apr 5, 2008 10:27 PM CDT 0 recs
Impossible task
It's way too many picks to say with any kind of authority.
For the best, I'll go with Roger Staubach - a 10th round pick in 1964, even as the Heisman trophy winner, because of his Naval service commitment. But it's hard to be unhappy with many of the Cowboy picks near the top of the draft: Bob Lilly, Too Tall Jones, Randy White, Tony Dorsett, Troy Aikman.
For the worst, it's hard to beat 2 first rounders for Galloway, considering what he did in Dallas. But if we're talking about actual picks, I'll go with Quincy Carter. I know, he wasn't a first round pick. But it was classic Jones - trading down, then getting spooked and trading back up to take Carter. Unlike other bust picks, he even played a fair bit and had a bit of success - only to retard the Cowboys' development as a team.

Worst
The two that I think were disappointments were Shante Carver and Sherman Williams.
by jack dein on Apr 6, 2008 12:16 AM CDT 0 recs
Yeah jackd
Shante was a megabust for the 23rd overall pick. For a best pick, how about Chad Hennings in the 11th round? He was a solid contributor and good character guy.

This one is tough...
The best pick in my opinion comes down to 2 players. The biggest travesty of a non-Hall of Fame player in the history of the league, Bullet, in the 7th round. This guy changed the game, and the NFL should be ashamed that he's not in the HoF.
Even though it was in the 2nd round, my pick is Larry Allen. He came from teeny-tiny Sonoma State (where the hell is that by the way). To find perhaps the greatest OG in the history of the NFL at such a tiny school, is the hidden gem of gems for Cowboys drafting.
The worst pick? This one for me isn't even close. The last offensive player Jerry has drafted in the first round. We were so set on finding Novaceck's replacement. David Lafleur.
The dreaded #22 pick in the draft. This guy played for 3 years and had 63 catches, 653 yards, and 10 TD. That's it, 3 years in the league and out.
by mhuff13 on Apr 6, 2008 8:11 AM CDT 0 recs
The best is tough
Pick one of the many hall of famers who played for Dallas. I will go with Roger Staubach, but reasonable people can disagree.
My pick for the worst is Shante Carver. He was going to replace Charles Haley, but all I ever saw was him getting knocked on his back on every play. On the other hand, some of you are making a compelling case for David LaFleur. Tough decision.
by Seanrude on Apr 6, 2008 8:20 AM CDT 0 recs
Best, worst
Staubach and Aikman were the best in my book. QB is far and away most important position, and it stands to reason that the best picks were qb’s – at least in terms of impact on the team. Lots of guys forget that about half the GM’s had Mandarich as the highest rated player in that draft. JJ&JJ ignored that nonsense and went with the qb. Great call.
Blogggers have been hammering LeFleur – but he might have turned out ok if not for the back injury. TE in the first round is a no-no though.
My biggest problem with that pick was that the GM decided to let the QB make the pick. That sort of managerial blunder is almost beyond comprehension.
For the worst pick I nominate Kendall Watkins. A blocking tight end....in the second round! Not a pass catching tight end – a blocking tight end. To me, that pick represents the height of the Jerry Jones immaturity and arrogance era....’we’re so good, so deep and so stacked that we don’t even need to draft players among the 22 starting positions.’ In retrospect, it is amazing.
by Cowboy Louie on Apr 6, 2008 8:35 AM CDT 0 recs
Worst/Best
Worst - Shante Carver
Best - (from a value pick perspective) Jay Ratliff up to this point.

best and worst
Best-In my mind the pick is easily Roger Staubach. A 10th round pick who went on to become one of the top QBs of all time, became a HOFer, won a couple superbowls and helped create the America's Team image.
Worst-Shante Carver or Danny Noonan
by Romo9 on Apr 6, 2008 10:21 AM CDT 0 recs

Eric Williams was regarded as the best Tackle in the league for several years...Witten is just now being considered one of the best at his position...If I had to choose between the two, I have to go with the more important position...
I love Witten....but he needs to play another 5 years at this high level to be in consideration...
I also had to bypass Harvey Martin DE, you can also be argued to be better at his position over Witten.
And Danny White...so it's not exactly an easy choice...

Worst Pick Ever
Back in 2000, following the trading of two #1 draft picks for Joey Galloway, Jerry's first pick in the second round was used to select Tennessee DB, Dwayne Goodrich.
Not only was Goodrich absolutely terrible when he finally found the field, he turned out to be a PR nightmare for the Cowboys and is currently serving time for manslaughter.
IMO....That's about as bad as it can get.

In a thankfully rare blunder, Jimmy threw away the first overall pick in the 1990 draft on a qb when he had taken a Aikman with the first overall pick in 1989. That would be like Indy drafting Peyton in 1998 and then picking up Tim Couch in the supplemental draft that same year.
Sure, Jimmy was able to spin straw into gold by trading him to the Aints, but that was still a dumb move.
Best pick ever was Troy Aikman, because if they hadn't selected him, they were seriously thinking about Tony Mandarich.
Best value pick was Roger Staubach.

Two worst have to be
Best pick has to be Hershal Walker in 1985. I think he was a fifth rounder and turned out to be a pretty good running back based on ability alone, but when you factor in what we got for trading him to Minnesota you'd have to say he was probably the best pick Dallas ever made.
If you don't take the trade into account, I'd go with Emmitt. Amazing how the team picked up one of the top 5 RBs of all time that far down in the first round.
by Valainferno on Apr 7, 2008 8:51 AM CDT 0 recs
after looking at everyone's best and worst
it seems that most of the bloggers are picking the best and worst picks based on the career of the player regardless of where they were selected in the draft.
I based my picks on the best value at where the player was selected. For example, Troy and Emmitt were clearly better players than Bob Hayes, but I picked him because he was a 7th rd pick as opposed to a 1st rd pick.
Same with my Noonan slection as the worst. Clearly players like Rogers and Goodrich were worse than Noonan, but they were 2nd rd picks as opposed to a high 1st rd pick.
So Brandon, when you say best and worst, is the rd where they selected be taken into account as well?
by Terry on Apr 7, 2008 10:35 AM CDT 0 recs
Ha!
This was a challenge thrown out there, and I knew I would receive a wide spectrum of player's names. Im going to take the players noted the most, 5 each, and do a profile on them and then we all vote.
Technically, I'm looking for draft steals and disappointments. When you draft Aikman at #1, you hope and expect him to excell. You dont think Bob Hayes will completely change the way the game is played from Round 7. The opposite with disappointments. You dont want a first round draft choice never doing anything worthwhile for your team.
So, Terry, you have it right on with we're lookin for.
