I was flipping through the channels on Sunday and started watching the Lakers-Nuggets game. Iverson is still fun to watch, so I knew I would get a show. However, it was the fans that would be the show worth watching.
It didn’t take long for the fans to start screaming “DUI” at Carmelo Anthony. The Staples Center screamed the three letters in unison at Anthony, who just got busted driving drunk. It got to the point where it would have been silly for the announcers not to acknowledge it.
I couldn’t decipher between voices so I don’t want to implicate the wrong announcer. I am guessing it was Jeff Van Gundy who acknowledged the chants. Van Gundy or whoever it was that was talking, said it was classless. Van Gundy went on to say that Anthony feels bad enough and it was a low move for the fans to bring it up.
Here is a newsflash. Driving drunk is a serious thing. Driving drunk with no regards for innocent families on the road is classless. Classless is having as much money as Anthony does and not calling a cab or limousine. Classless is an athlete who is looked up to by kids across the country doing something stupid. Classless is someone who will accept endorsements as a role model and do something as irresponsible as driving drunk. Lastly, classless is an announcer telling fans who probably paid hundreds of dollars what they can and can’t say.
Kudos to the fans in Los Angeles that called attention to Anthony’s drunk driving on national television. Maybe the next time Anthony thinks about driving drunk, he will think back to the day he was embarrassed on national television? Lord knows that the announcers would never point out the fact that the star just got out of jail last week for driving drunk.
It just goes to show you how out of touch those within professional sports are from the public. Someone like Van Gundy would rather criticize the fans than take issue with a professional athlete for driving drunk. As long as Anthony and other athletes continue to get coddled like that, more will drive drunk and act irresponsibly without remorse.
So I commend the Los Angeles fans for embarrassing Carmelo Anthony on Sunday. The attitudes of people like Van Gundy and the other announcers are the same people who become more offended at fans for yelling “wife beater” than the athlete who actually beat his wife.
Hey, if you don’t want the fans to yell “DUI” than don’t defend the athletes who drive drunk.

I have worked in the professional wrestling business for 12 years. For the last 9 years I have been an announcer and host for several pro wrestling television shows, home videos, and pay-per-views. I am the host of the radio show, Pro Wrestling Radio heard on WBCB 1490AM since 1999. You can read my complete bio on my website, by

DUI laws are way to strict. It does nothing to stop the dangerous drunk drivers. People that get wasted and drive will do it whether the legal limit is .1 or .08 its a joke. These laws only affect the person that has one sip too many and gets f’ed in the A while someone lines their pockets with the thousands of dollars that are made. I don’t like Carmello Anthony but lets face it most fans are classless….you should know philly fan.

Anthony’s DUI was definitely stupid, and Laker fans are entitled to yell whatever they’d like when they attend the game. Still, I can’t help but think it’s a great example of just how bad mob mentality can be. I’m not trying to defend Anthony - it’s just that pointing out another person’s foibles ad nausea is at best obnoxious.
