ESPN’s Ed Werder is reporting that the Titans and Cowboys have finally agreed in principle on the terms of a trade that would give the Cowboys the rights to suspended cornerback Pacman Jones.
Per Werder, the Titans will receive the Cowboys’ fourth-round pick in this weekend’s draft. The Cowboys could also end up sending additional compensation to the Titans, depending on whether Jones is reinstated and, if he is, how much playing time he gets. Jones will sign a new contract with the Cowboys; he will pay $500,000 to a charity of the Titans’ choosing as part of a financial settlement with the Titans.
If Jones is still suspended a year from now, the Titans will send an undisclosed 2009 draft pick back to the Cowboys.
The big question is whether Jones will ever be allowed back in the league, and whether the revelation this week that he paid hush money to the man arrested for a strip club shooting will have any bearing on his reinstatement.
Asked about that yesterday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, “I only know what I’ve read about that. Just take that on its face.”
UPDATE: The Titans have issued a statement confirming the trade, pending final details being worked out and Jones passing a physical.

This is a good move for them. If he picks up where he left off, but if he lost his edge then it kills them. I wonder if the pick is refundable if he isn’t reinstated.

Jones told Michael Irvin on his show a day or two ago, that the Commish was told about the hush money in his first interview. So that was nothing new to the Commish.

Oh man, I love the Cowboys making these ridiculous moves. TO & Pacman Jones in the same locker room sounds like a riot. The guy that cries because his Quarterback is going to get attacked by the media and the guy that makes girls cry by punching girls in the face when they don’t let him ‘make it rain’.

It is a good move for Dallas. A fourth round pick would likely make a minimal impact this season, and the Cowboys are trying to get a championship now instead of looking for 2nd day gems. I just hope that Pacman Jones truly realizes that this is likely his final chance, and even more importantly, I hope that Jerry Jones will cut Pacman should he screw up.

I’m a cowboys fan but I absolutely hate everything related to Jerry Jones. I want to just sigh and hope it goes away but he won’t die. He’s the Mr. Burns of the NFL.

All this reiterates is that Jerry Jones is the best owner in the NFL.
And i put emphasis on owner because he just pwnd the Titans out of a 6th overall gem. This guy will sign on the cheap and if he messes up then he’s out. A 4th round pick is worth this kind of risk. The guy is a dangerous return man and if he picks up where he left off he has the ability to be a #1 CB. Terrance Newman is a stud, but he better step up if he wants that $60M contract next year.
Now Jerry can focus on robbing another team during the draft and other important things like running the NFL.

To all of the detractors, this is exactly the same response that erupted over Charles Halley, Deion Sanders, Terrell Owens, Tank Williams, and several more over the years. Most worked out well.
Yes, the circumstances are all different but I have more confidence in the Dallas Cowboys making the right decision with the appropriate management of risk. So give this transaction a chance. This is no guarantee for success, just a more optimistic perspective given the Cowboys’ history.

I’m so glad, we don’t have to deal with this punk anymore, and now instead of hearing “Suspended Titans Cornerback pacman Jones. . .” we will here “Suspended Cowboys Cornerback. . .” and that is my favorite part. cause i don’t want this guy to have any affiliation with the titans anymore. Good Riddance moron

A good move for Dallas and Jones both - I mean its not like Dallas has a history of players with behavioral problems getting into trouble or anything like that.

With the way Jones has stunk as a solo-GM, this is a no-brainer move. If Pacman plays, he’s a Top 10 CB and returner. If he sits, Jerry won’t get trashed for making a bad pick in Round 4.
Either way, GM Jerry gets people talking about his team which he believes is worth the 4th Rd gamble…

What pick would the Titans have to send back to the Cowboys if he never gets reinstated? This is a pretty major sticking point. If they have to send back a 4th rounder in 2009 (which could well be a better pick than the 2008 4th rounder they are getting), the Titans got ripped off pretty bad.

I’m not sure why people still think that Pacman is accused of paying hush money to someone. If you read the article line by line, what they are actually saying is that the shooter PAID PACMAN to keep his mouth shut. Pacman not only didn’t keep his mouth shut, but the turned the shooter in for paying him the $$, AND picked him out of the lineup. The article breaking this story was poorly written, but if you read it very closely, line by line, and you read the follow on articles about this story, you will see very clearly that PACMAN was sent money through an intermediary so that he would keep his mouth shut. Pacmans family was also threatened if he didn’t keep his mouth shut. Pacman has helped his cause tremendously by cooperating with authorities and also telling them about the payoff money the shooter sent him and the threats against his family.

I agree with whomever mentioned the 2009 reimbursement the Titans have to give up. This is huge.
If they didn’t have that little clause, the best case scenario for the Titans was for Pacman to never be reinstated. Now, what exactly is it? If Pacman plays, he’s going to play well - there’s no question about that. Then they’re out a huge player for some 4th round pick. If he doesn’t play, then they’re out some 2009 pick.
On the face of it, this looks horrible. I think the Titans lose either way, most obviously in the respect that they wilted to pressure from a minority of fans.

tbosa,
Explain to me how you interpret any article indicating that Pacman received money rather than paying it.
Regardless, the article does state that Pacman paid an extortion, not that he paid “hush money.” It is journalistically irresponsible to refer to it as hush money when the authorities declare it an extortion attempt.
For those of you who say “Why should we believe Pacman?” I respond as follows:
1. The police believe him and by now everyone has it in for Pacman (Reno 911 notwithstanding).
2. Why believe the “shooter” over the “informant?” All things being equal the shooter has more to lose than the person that made it rain.
Pacman should be reinstated. The Vegas incident was part of his season long sentence. He was not reinstated after 10 games because of it.
If you fans don’t like it, vote with your dollars then the Jerry Jones’s of the world will not pick up players like Pacman. If the Cowboys win, and Jerry makes more money, he will continue to obtain the services of Pacman, TO, Tank Johnson, and the like. Players win games. Pacman is a playa.
