Dallas Cowboys random articles
The SA E-N thinks that Dallas defense should be formidable because of all the top draft picks filling its ranks. Yeah, well, that’s been the case for a while and the defense has had moments of brilliance it can’t consistently shut-down opponents and elevate itself to elite status. Maybe this year, with everybody having experience in the Phillips 34, they will finally make that leap. One guy that might shake things up is Tank Johnson. I’ve contended since we signed the guy that he is one of the better DT/NT’s in the league and that all he would need is some time to learn the 3-4 and what Phillips wants him to do. DeMarcus Ware agrees:
"The thing is Tank’s going to be coming around," Ware told reporters this week in Irving. "He’s a beast in the middle now. People don’t realize (how good he can be) with a full offseason, when he’s all the way in shape and he’s really comfortable with what’s going on."
Tank Johnson is starter material and if the Cowboys get a backup NT in the draft they could use Jay Ratliff more as a defensive end. This could make our pass rush less reliant on Ware and Greg Ellis to get everything done. Of course, adding Pacman to the secondary could make a big difference all around.
Speaking of Mr. Wocka-wocka, the Lions are not interested.
"We've talked about it, but for a lot of reasons, we aren't going to try to get him," [Matt] Millen said. "He has a lot of talent. We wish him well."

Mickey Spags answers some mail.

Here’s a mock draft that has us trading out of the first round with our #28 pick.
22. Cowboys(from Browns) Mike Jenkins CB 5-11 200 South Florida Senior The Cowboys lost two cornerbacks in free agency, Jacques Reeves and Nathan Jones, so adding depth in the secondary is a must. South Florida's Mike Jenkins provides Dallas with a quality cover corner that they can build their secondary around.
28. Falcons(from Cowboys) Brian Brohm QB 6-3 230 Louisville Senior The Falcons passed on Matt Ryan with their first pick and decided to take Jake Long to add stability on the O-Line. In my previous mock draft, I projected the Dolphins to trade up with the Cowboys at the 22nd overall selection, but now I foresee the Falcons trading up with the Cowboys at this pick to grab Brian Brohm. Atlanta gives up one of their second-round selections (48th overall) and third-round selection (68th overall) in the trade. The Falcons copy the Browns' plan from last year and get a franchise OT and QB in the first round.

Here's what I'm inclined to believe
Continued improvement in Spencer and Canty, drafting a wide bodied NT to free up Zach Thomas, and dangling Ayodele as trade bait on draft day to get in position to get the players the scouts like. Moving Ratliff back to DE.
Replacing Davis with another SS. I read up on Barrett who looked great initially, and he's had a lot of injury problems, so maybe Tyrell Johnson or MB3's younger brother Dominique Barber would be better picks.
Whether Pacman comes to Dallas or not, still pick up 2 highly rated CB's.
Might need to pick up an OLB. I don't know anything about the guys behind Ware, Ellis, and Spencer, but if the coaches don't see much there, we'd need another backup.

Tom, I'm liking that Johnson dude as well...
I've been checkin Tyrell Johnson out...he sure has all the measurables and work out numbers....but coming out of lowly Arkansas St, one could question his impact on the NFL level....but I'd be happy if he's taken in rounds 4 through 7 ....Srong safeties are hard to come by in this draft. There are only 3-5 in the entire group worth even drafting...hopefully we get one though...Kenny Phillips slips to # 28....we might want to go that route...

Yeah, Ark St is tiny
But then again, so is DRC's school.
Johnson sounds like he could be a playmaker, and a monster on ST's.
I have read so many different takes on Phillips, I really don't know what to make of him. He might just be a good player whose stock is way up based on Miami's track record of developing guys like Ed Reed, and Sean Taylor. Then again, Dallas can pick up Johnson with a lower pick and not have to use #28 for Phillips.

Believe me...I'm not sold on Phillips.......
But all I can rely on is the word of Randy Shannon...his head coach, who compares him to Sean Taylor....He's very aggressive, a big hitter, a sure tackler....good speed, and instincts.....
what else can you ask for in a safety ???
I'm not saying we should draft him in the first....but if there was chance at all of him sliding close to us in the second round, I'd surely trade up to get him.....Or if we were to trade down out of the first with pick #28, there is no doubt he'd be an option in the top of the second round.
We NEED a Strong Safety in this draft....period...
Phillips rounds 1-2
Barrett rounds 2-3
Morgan rounds 3-4
Adams rounds 4-5
Johnson rounds 5-6
Cambell rounds 6-7

Nose Tackle
I was over at dallascowboys.com taking a look at the depth chart - yeah, I’m that football-starved during the off-season. The Cowboys management must agree with Ware since Jay Ratliff is listed as a defensive end, not a defensive tackle. Unfortunately, the players currently on the roster manning the nose tackle position do not exactly instill confidence: Remi Ayodele, Tank Johnson and Junior Siavii.
This got me thinking about the nose tackle spot. Both Ayodele and Siavii are marginal journeymen players who probably should be out of the league. But Grady Jackson is out there, available as a free agent. He did a nice job in Jax last season after having some sort of fallout with Atlanta. Before that, he was a very effective player in Green Bay.
Yep, he’s 35 and likely overweight. But under the right circumstances, the guy can clog up the middle as well as anyone. I think the right circumstances would be playing him about 25-35% of the plays. A nose tackle rotation of Tank Johnson and Grady Johnson might be quite effective. Maybe even move Spears over to nose tackle and have him battle it out for playing time. In that situation, both Rat and Spears would be quite valuable because they could play multiple defensive line positions if injuries hit.
If we could get Grady Jackson for a reasonable signing bonus and base salary under a contract that can be easily voided after one year, I’d be all for bringing him in. He wouldn’t be taking the roster spot or playing time of anyone we aren’t already trying to replace. Thoughts anyone?

I have a ton of confidence in Tank
I'd rather pick up a young NT in the draft to back him up and to groom for the future.

that's the most screwed up Mocks
I've seen yet. Picking up a QB at 28...LMAO!!
One thing I thought of after seeing our draft board plastered on the internet. If the scouthing department thinks so highly of Kenny Phillips and we trade for PacMan I could see us drafting Phillips at #28. RB would be taken at 22 still.
If we could some how resign Hamlin we could see Hamlin and Phillips in the backfield in 2009?. Not a bad idea or Phillips and Watkins if Hamlin is not resigned. Both scenarios wouldn't be pretty good. Roy is gone after this season I have no doubt in my mind.

Cowboy81 ??..You need to read it closer...
The mock has us trading our #28 to Atlanta....so THEY can draft a QB....
If we go CB with pick (22) one...I can sure this happening, Although I wouldn't do it for their 48th pick.....34th or 37th pick more like it.

I agree Grizz....Tank can handle it...
Get him a beefy rookie to back him up, we'll be fine...I'd much rather see Rat on the outside reaking havoc ...

not a bad idea
and he would be a good run stuffer. If we could get him for real cheap I would have no problems with that sign.

man, I really hope we don't draft Jenkins
out of all the top rated CBs in the draft, I think he has the biggest bust potential, even more than Talib.

yup
probably why he is slipping

If DRC and McKelvin are gone by #22
I'm hoping the Cowboys draft Cason in the first rd. I think that kid is really flying under the radar...so far.

I agree Terry, alot of people are down on Cason

yes and unlike Jenkins and Talib, Cason is
a high character guy which if the talent is pretty equal, you gotta go with the better character guy, like we did when we selected Ware over Merriman in 2005.

Plus, Cason is a playmaker...
... who excels best in big-game situations.
Exhibit A:
And if you have time to watch and listen, here's an example of the kid's maturity:

Runningbacks
Spags has this, which got me thinking:
Doug McBroom, Fayetteville, N. C.: Let's say Dallas picks up a speedy/elusive running back like Felix Jones in the draft. Chances are he will back up Barber and play mostly in the fourth quarter. If the offense is in control and the opposing defense is tired, the backup will probably knock out some great runs. I love Barber, but will everyone be saying, "Hey the new guy has better runs than Barber, so make him starter." Same stuff, different starter.
Mickey: Good one, at least you made me smile. Now don't simply assume the new running back would take over Barber's previous role. The guy could take over Julius Jones' former role, and the Cowboys keep Barber as their fourth-quarter closer and continue to use him inside the 20. Now he might get more carries earlier in a game, but I'm guessing the position still would be a timeshare.
Last year, J Jones was technically the starter, but that was really more because he got the first series, and as I recall they basically alternated series, and MB3 got as much playing time as Jones. They did use Barber more for short yardage situations, and in the fourth quarter when the D was worn down, but they really shared the position, and despite not starting in the first series
Barber wasn't really a backup running back.
So if they do draft someone like Felix Jones, just because Barber is the starter doesn't mean their respective roles would necessarily change much. Barber will start the first series, and will probably get a larger proportion of the carries, but the styles of the runners will still dictate when they are used in terms of downs, yardage situations, and quarters, probably more than who is technically the starter and who the backup.
does that make sense?

Hear ya loud and clear......
I'm tellin' ya all right now...IF we select Felix Jones in this years draft....EXPECT some serious fireworks in our offense. Jones relishes in this role, HE, unlike the other top guys, doesn't mind coming off the bench, and is quite used to it. HE, is a major improvement over Julius Jones, and with our O line...He's going to breaking off 10-20 yard runs with regularity, occasionally blowing off 40+ yard runs...
Knowing that DRC and McLovin will be gone at #22....I'd take no other player besides Felix Jones.

I'd only take Mendenhall over Jones
but I agree, Jones would be a great addition to our offense.
