Texas Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said Wednesday he's working on a contract offer to extend Tech coach Mike Leach to five years and give him a raise. But Larry Anders, Tech's Board of Regents vice chair from Plano, said Wednesday that regents would be advised about the parameters of a contract offer before one is proposed to Mike Leach and that hasn't happened yet. Tech has a regents meeting scheduled for the end of next week, however. "I would be surprised if we don't have some discussion by next week," Anders said. "Before the season began, his agent, acting on Coach Leach's behalf, wanted to renegotiate that contract and we said we'd have some interest but some of the numbers he was proposing weren't realistic. But we absolutely want to keep Mike." All it took was one bad season, marked by offensive struggles and coaching staff tumoil, to doom Tommy Tuberville at Auburn. And guess who apparently has been unofficially contacted by the school? Well, besides Bobby Petrino, which was a given. That would be Mike Leach, according to the Birmingham News. TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been named the Mountain West defensive player of the year. He is one of 18 Horned Frogs who earned all-MWC honors. Hughes is the first TCU player to earn the MWC's top defensive honor and the first Horned Frog named a league defensive player of the year since linebacker LeMarcus Donald in Conference USA in 2002. Hughes, you might remember, jumped into the national consciousness by way of TCU's 32-7 thrashing of BYU on Oct. 16. had four sacks and two forced fumbles in the victory. The 6-2, 248-pound Hughes leads the nation in sacks (14) and forced fumbles (six). Hughes has also been named a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive end, and the Bronco Nagurski Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive player. The official release from TCU details the team's 17 other honorees: The entry "TCU DE Hughes named Mountain West's top defensive player" is tagged: Jerry Hughes , TCU football
I know this because of a press release sent out on behalf of a Las Vegas oddsmaker. "Vegas deals in facts, and the betting professionals believe that Oklahoma is clearly the superior team," R.J. Bell of Pregame.com said. Does anybody remember the score from that game in October that OU entered as seven-point favorites? Horns fans were disappointed that the BCS didn't deal in that fact. Texas Tech safety Darcel McBath, SMU punter/kicker Thomas Morstead and TCU linebacker Jason Phillips are among seven of the 26 players who have accepted invitations to the East-West Shrine game held Jan. 17 at Houston's Roberston Stadium. The matchup, which began in 1925, is one of the premier showcases for college seniors. Here is the acceptance list as of today for the 84th annual East-West Shrine game: The entry "Seven players with state ties in East-West Shrine Game" is tagged: Rice , Sam Houston State , SMU football , TCU football , Texas A&M football , Texas Tech football ESPN.com has a terrific read on former Oklahoma basketball great Wayman Tisdale, who is rebounding well after losing a leg to cancer. The entry "Catching up with Wayman Tisdale" is tagged: Oklahoma , Wayman Tisdale ESPN's always readable Pat Forde does his end-of-the-season column, which has major Big 12 influences from a certain divisional tiebreaker to Texas vs. Tech in Lubbock and the conference quarterbacks. One of the most interesting takes is player of the year, where Forde picks Colt McCoy. His reasons: It's close between McCoy and a quartet of other quarterbacks -- Sam Bradford of Oklahoma, Graham Harrell of Texas Tech, Tim Tebow of Florida and Nate Davis of Ball State. But none of the others carried the load McCoy did, leading the Longhorns in rushing, throwing for 3,445 yards and accounting for 42 touchdowns running and passing -- as The Dash has been saying all season, he's out-Tebowed Tebow. And his skill-position supporting cast isn't as good as Bradford's. The 2008 season was one of transition for the SMU football team, from beginning the era of coach June Jones to the passing of the guard at quarterback. Freshman Bo Levi Mitchell won the starting job in fall camp over junior Justin Willis, who had started the previous two years. The thinking was that Mitchell was a better fit for Jones' Run and Shoot offense. After watching a two-touchdown lead evaporate into a 56-27 loss at Rice in the season opener, Mitchell said he learned quickly that this wasn't Katy High. Throwing nearly as many interceptions (23) as touchdown passes (24) served as a wake-up call, too. "The main thing I learned is to listen to your coaches and go out there and do what they say to do," Mitchell said. "I would go out there and free-lance a little bit. That's the kind of thing that won't happen next year. I'm not going to be second-guessing myself. I'm going to know before the snap starts." On the season, Mitchell completed 236 of 410 passes for 2,865 yards with an efficiency rating of 124.36. The entry "SMU: QB Mitchell reflects on his season, Justin Willis" is tagged: Bo Levi Mitchell , Justin Willis , SMU football Where there's smoke, there's apparently Mike Leach in Washington. No, that wasn't Vince Gill on that plane to Seattle, apparently. Both Seattle papers, the Times and the Post-Intelligencer, have reports about Leach interviewing for the Washington job. Despite regression during the Ty Willingham era, this is still probably one of the better jobs west of the Rockies. Athletic quarterback Jake Locker would be a nice cornerstone. A couple of questions: -- How serious is Washington about Leach, especially if Boise State's Chris Peterson may be available? -- What's Texas Tech's counter-move? -- Did Leach go off on a card-trick-and-pirate tangent during the interview? The entry "Reports: Leach interviews at Washington" is tagged: Washington Huskies December 2, 2008Bob Stoops and his Oklahoma team are trying to put all the BCS tiebreaker questions behind them as they head for Kansas City and the Big 12 title game matchup with Missouri. Their fans are having difficulty with the task, to judge from about 24 hours in the Sooner State. On talk radio, fans were referring to ESPN and what they saw as Longhorn bias as TSPN. You know what the "T" stands for. And they still can't understand the head-to-head argument and why a large section of the country thinks Texas got a raw deal. Cool-headed media types have been urging fans to enjoy their off-the-field win over Texas. Because nothing could go wrong could it? Can you say AP national championship?
The entry "Paranoia in Oklahoma " has no entry tags. Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe, whose opinions on all things tiebreaker are suddenly in demand, talked with ESPN Tuesday. He essentially repeated and elaborated on the statement he released Sunday after Oklahoma moved past Texas in the BCS standings and won a three-way Big 12 South tiebreaker. But just because the Big 12 will review the tiebreaker doesn't necessarily mean change. "I'm not so sure that this isn't the best way to do it," Beebe told ESPN. "I understand the argument about head-to-head and it is a strong point, but as a lot of voters looked at it, and as the committees that select basketball tournament participants look at it, 'What team would you least want to play now?'" And, in a bit of news, Beebe acknowledged exchanging e-mails with Texas coach Mack Brown. The entry "Beebe talks tiebreaker with ESPN" is tagged: Dan Beebe
If I was a BCS official, I'd think twice about visiting Austin. Seems as if the UT crowd is taking this seriously. Two questions: Is it a misdemeanor or felony? And have the Feds been notified? We're still putting our DMN team together. How do y'all think the Big 12 did? The following team, announced today, was determined by the coaches, who cannot vote for their own players. OU QB Sam Bradford is the offensive player of the year, Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo the defensive player of the year and OU's Bob Stoops and Texas Tech's Mike Leach shared the coach of the year honor. Oklahoma State's Dez Bryant is the special teams player of the year, and Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin is the offensive freshman of the year. OU linebacker Travis Lewis is the defensive freshman of the year. Here's the rest of the Big 12 release: The entry "All-Big 12 football awards for your perusal " has no entry tags. A passenger on a flight from Las Vegas to Seattle yesterday afternoon informed the Seattle Times that Mike Leach and his wife, Sharon, were on the plane. (Hat tip, ESPN.com) If true, it's not too difficult to connect the dots and determine that Leach is meeting with Washington officials to discuss the Huskies' coaching vacancy. He's been mentioned as a candidate since Tyrone Willingham's dismissal was announced. Leach's cell phone wasn't turned on when I called a few minutes ago. The technophobe does not have voicemail, so I wasn't able to leave a message. Leach has never been shy about exploring other jobs. He went after the Miami (Fla.) job two years ago, although he described his conversations with The U officials as "informal." Tech athletic director Gerald Myers has vowed to renegotiate Leach's contract at the end of the season. This could be a case of Leach making sure he has as much leverage as possible. Then again, Leach might never be able to top at Tech what has happened this season, especially with Graham Harrell and (probably) Michael Crabtree gone after the bowl game. Maybe he wants to sell high and take on a massive rebuilding project in the Pacific Northwest. The entry "Mike Leach meeting with Washington?" is tagged: Gerald Myers , Washington Huskies
Southern Miss receiver DeAndre Brown won an appeal to Conference USA regarding his role in a scuffle with SMU cornerback Derrius Bell and will not have to sit out the first half of the Golden Eagles' next game. Brown and Bell were ejected for fighting in the third quarter of SMU's 28-12 loss on Saturday. According to NCAA rules, players ejected for fighting in th second half of a game must sit out the first half of the next game. Southern Miss qualified for a bowl with the victory. No further action, other than the NCAA-mandated penalty, has been taken against Bell by Conference USA at this time. The entry "So. Miss. WR Brown allowed to play first half of next game" is tagged: Conference USA , SMU football Graham Harrell's storybook finale at Jones AT&T Stadium was overshadowed by all the BCS drama over the weekend. That's too bad, because it was a case of one of Tech's all-time greats going out with one heck of a gutsy performance. Forget Harrell's stats from the game, which were pedestrian by his standards. Never mind that the opponent was Baylor, a program that made major progress by getting out of the Big 12 South basement this season. Harrell led a comeback while playing the second half with two shattered fingers on his left hand. He delivered a Big 12 South championship trophy to Tech -- and that means much more in Lubbock than it does in Austin or Norman -- and celebrated by getting 17 pins and two plates inserted in the fingers the next day. Harrell has put up ridiculous passing stats and made remarkable strides as a leader in his three seasons as the Red Raiders' starter. Remember Harrell's first home start against a Big 12 team? It was a lopsided loss to Missouri he'd probably like to forget. The lowlight was when Harrell responded to fans booing him for throwing a pick-six by flashing a double-barreled, R-rated version of the Guns Up sign. Harrell had some trouble with the Guns Up sign Saturday, too, but only because he had a couple mangled fingers taped together after a heroic final performance in front of the home crowd. The entry "Graham Harrell leaves Lubbock a legend" is tagged: Baylor , Guns Up USC is wearing red for Saturday's game at UCLA -- even if the decision will cost the Trojans a timeout per half. |
