Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. “I constantly marvel at how Bill (IwoCPO) and his disciples at Abel To Yzerman can be so pompous and full of themselves throughout every regular season, but come playoff time they collapse into wavering puddles of stress and nervousness as they anxiously await the impending and unavoidable collapse of the Red Wings in the post-season.”

Decisions In Denver

Anyone predict a sweep?  Anybody?  One guy did.

Ken Campbell, The Hockey News Senior writer

Detroit over Colorado 4-0 – Just a hunch, but it says here the Red Wings will prick the Jose Theodore bubble early and once that happens, the floodgates will open and pucks will come rushing through.

Am I ready to join that parade, even up 2-0?  No, not yet.  But I do have a couple other views your family may find interesting.

Why Joel Quenneville didn’t immediately announce Peter Budaj as his Game 3 starter is beyond me.  Don’t get me wrong.  Seeing Three...no, Four back in net for the next one would fill me with Christmas morning like joy.  But I’d be shocked if 60 waddled out to start that game.  If he does, Quenneville is perhaps the stupidest man in hockey.  And, if Three...oh well, make it Four does start that game, it’s proof that Joel Quenneville actually wants to be fired.  Quenneville should announce it today so that the “controversy” is over by Tuesday.  And that’s the extent of my constructive advice for that team.  You wanna start Three was bad, but Four?, go ahead.  Roll the dice.  We welcome that kind of brash behavior.

Rocky Mountain News

“We’ll talk about everything, but Jose’s been our guy,” Quenneville said. “Coming off what he went through is not easy. I thought ‘Boods’ did a real nice job in relief again, but Jose’s the one who brought us here.”

Wow.  Pretty dumb.  Yep. Your boy JoeSay got you there Joel.  He got you in a big pile of stinking trouble is what he’s done.  You let him convince you he was healthy enough to get by the heaves long enough to keep you in Game 1.  Then he blew more chunks while allegedly healthy in Game 2.

If Budaj doesn’t start Game 3 and the doors get blown off again?  Dive fans may want to take a wistful look at Mike Babcock, a coach who is unafraid to make a goalie change in the playoffs, a coach who has no problem sitting a legend, and the rewards he’s reaped from that decision.  Sitting a mediocre goalie who just happened to play well in the final year of his contract?  Is that a tough call?  Must be.

Keep him in there idiot.  We’re hoping you do.

Petey gonna play?  I don’t know.  I’d guess probably.  The Dive must have been so excited to see their hero take the pre-game skate.  Of course, when he didn’t actually, you know, play...the consensus is that his teammates, the ones who fought for their playoff lives for six months before Floppa decided to join them in late March, well...they got kinda sad and deflated.

Frei

And this from Ryan Smyth: “I think if he’s ready to play, he wants to play at 100 percent. It’s an unfortunate thing because he’s a huge part of it. There’s nobody who knows his body more than him. If he doesn’t feel that he’s ready, then he feels that he’s not an asset. That’s his judgment call. I don’t think he’s a big distraction, no.”

Ah yes.  He wants to be 100 percent.  Pavel Datsyuk would like to be 100 percent, and I’m thinking he’s not.  We know Holmstrom isn’t.  Zetterberg’s not.  Cleary, McCarty, Stuart, Lidstrom, Samuelsson...none of them are.  You think Smyth’s 100 percent?  Here’s what I think Ryan Smyth would like to say.

“Forsberg’s a coward.  Play or get the hell out.”

He’ll be in there Tuesday.  And someone will convince Quenneville that Budaj needs to start, so he’ll be in there too.  Hannan will probably be back.  Game 3 is their Game 7 and the Dive will be desperate.

But desperation is one thing, depth is another.  And they don’t have the depth to stop Johan Franzen.  Don’t worry. Nobody has for the last two months.  No Red Wing in recent history has had this kind of impact.  Eleven game winners through March and April? Are you frigging kidding me?  Three game winners out of the six Wing playoff wins?  7 goals in six games.  And here’s the real issue for those hoping to stop him.

Who has the defensive depth to stop Zetterberg and Datsyuk, then roll another line capable of stifling Franzen?  No one.  That’s who.

Khan(!)

“He’s hanging onto the puck. He’s got his head up and he knows where the other players are,’’ Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom said of Franzen. “That’s why he’s able to do some of those things. His balance is so good that he’s tough to knock off the puck. He’s brave, too. He takes the puck hard to the net.’’

A “brave” Swede.  Wonder if the Dive wish they had one of those?

Big talk from me today.  Optimistic tone and all that.  Deserving? Of course.  The Wings looked brilliant yesterday, except for the two minutes after the French guy’s goal.  They looked a little rattled but snapped out of it.  Osgood was steady.  Every phase was good, no let up and no signs that Denver had any right to be in the same building.

But I think back nine years to 1999, the last time the Wings had themselves a 2-0 lead against the Dive.  Heck, I think back two weeks, the last time Detroit had a 2-0 lead in a playoff series.

Again, Mike Babcock will earn his new contract this week.  Forsberg or no Forsberg.  Detroit has to leave Denver with a 3-1 lead or a sweep.  Hopefully, lessons were learned against Bubba...a team with heart. Hopefully, the conversations have already begun about how important it will be to stifle any signs of life left in Denver.

How about this for a ‘Digger headline:

Chief:

Hopefully, lessons were learned against Bubba...a team with heart.

Are you implying the ‘Dique have no heart?

We, the 19 on the stress train, all echo your sentiment that DET has to take at least one game at the Can.  Choke the freaking life out of them!
And there is at least one DET MSM that feels the same way too; Bob Wojnowski, DETNEWS.com:

Wings flying—and should keep it that way

DETROIT—The Mule keeps kicking and the Red Wings keep skating and the Avalanche keep reeling and, well, this is no time for mercy. The Wings are pouncing on a wounded foe with both skates and all arms and even a fist or two. They should do everyone a favor and not let up, and end this as soon as possible.

Was just watching the replay of NHL ON THE FLY, and they informed me that, since the beginning of March, noone in the NHL has scored more goals then MULE!!  Noone, like, not even Ovechkin.  Frigging amazing!

Ohh, and they also showed Jose three or four’s stats for his two games against the Wings, (not exact, due to faulty memory) his save% was around 700, and his GA/A was over 9

And, if Three...oh well, make it Four does start that game, it’s proof that Joel Quenneville actually wants to be fired.

Yeah Q, go ahead and put Jose in the arena with the lions—brilliant!!

“Forsberg’s a coward.  Play or get the hell out.”

I wish Smyth did say that. You would know for sure that he cares more about the team than he does about hurting a guy’s feelings or reputation. I would be really surprised if something hasn’t been said to Pete directly––especially by Sakic.

What I really don’t get though is how a guy calls *himself* unfit to play. The only Wing to pull that kind of garbage is Dom, but even he played through a hurt wrist and other ailments (Insanity) last playoffs. Only the medical staff should declare you unfit, otherwise you go out there. Fortunately, Pete didn’t want to play for us and neither did Smyth…

...Brunnstrom are you listening/ watching this? This is your future buddy. Follow Marty Broduer’s advice and put winning ahead of your own ego; there will be huge dividends in the long run.--> see Oklahoma Lawyer Jeff for details.

Unashamed self congratulation: I said Kronwall would have a big game yesterday and he was the number two star. How he got that ahead of Z I’m not sure, but all that proves is that the Universe adjusts to my prognosticationary powers. grin

If Openthedoor starts game 3, this series is a sweep. Guaranteed. I still call Wings in 5 but only because the Avs will squeeze out a win; we’ll dominate but Budaj may steal one for them.

Are you implying the ‘Dique have no heart?

Took me about ten minutes to write the sentence you’re referencing Jeff.  It’s hard for me to come right out and say a group of hockey players don’t have heart.  In fact, it would be just stupid.

The team?  I wouldn’t say that.  Forsberg?  Heartless.

Posted by IwoCPO from Washington, DC  on  04/27  at  10:56 AM

Some respect to frenchy for saying this (reported in lots of places):

“If we use that as an excuse, we have to do something else with our lives,” said Colorado’s Ian Laperriere, who scored early in the third period. “Every team goes through that.”

I’m not sure what your team is doing but they sure as hell aren’t playing hockey.

Posted by Osrt  on  04/27  at  11:01 AM

I want to know why Cody McLeod was not assessed a game misconduct and a $10,000 fine for touching an octopus on the ice. He even had a rubber glove on, so if given the chance he could pick it up and toss it. Oh yea, the NHL needs to abide by their own rules.

The officials did indeed send a message to Quinville about putting out the goon squad. That was seen during the march to the sin bin by the Dive goons.

Now as far as Forsberg goes, it is always about Peter and the constant drama that surrounds him. It is never about the team.

Posted by Kate from Pa.  on  04/27  at  11:06 AM

Buddah takes game 3.  He’s look decent against the Wings.  Games 4 & 5… the goal totals will be about 8-3. Wings will move on to face a beat up team, worn out team.

Posted by cementslinger from Midland MI  on  04/27  at  11:08 AM

Here’s hoping Babcock doesn’t mess with the lines for Game 3 as he did in the first round. Keep them as they are! It doesn’t matter that you don’t have the last change. The Avs can’t stop the top two lines and have difficulties with the third and fourth.

Posted by Matt Saler  on  04/27  at  11:29 AM

I don’t blame Quenneville for not wanting to start Budaj.  The Avs have to win four of the next five games against the best offensive team in the league (they scored 7.6% of Western Conference goals, against Montreal’s 7.5% of Eastern Conference goals) and the best defensive team in the league--at the same time.  Because they’re the same team.

Colorado’s chances of winning this series with good goaltending?  Roughly 0%.  Colorado’s chances of winning this series with unbelievable goaltending?  A little higher.  Jose Not Just Three, But Four In Just Half a Game, for all his issues, is the guy more likely to provide that.  It’s kind of the opposite of the Wings situation.  Detroit just needs good goaltending, so they go with the steady guy who won’t steal many games.  Colorado needs the guy who’s playing like crap, because good just won’t be enough.

Plus, if those two games are the last of these playoffs for Jose, it could be the end of his career.  And you wouldn’t want that on your head if you’re Quenneville, would you?

Posted by Ryan from Toronto  on  04/27  at  11:31 AM

Budaj will start game three, Forsberg and Hannan will play.  It will be a close affair.  But if Babcock can have those guys steady, and they can withstanding or outdo the first period rush from the Dive, then Detroit could be poised to really go far.  This is beginning to get really exciting.

Posted by TDeters from Washington, DC  on  04/27  at  11:34 AM

Who is 100% during the playoffs?  Nobody.  if you aren’t hurt, you aren’t trying.  Forsberg lacks heart and balls.

It is the reason he started so many scrums, and then backed away out the back door of them.  Floppa will return in Game 3 only because it will feed his immense ego’s need for adulation.  The AssCan will be loud and deluded thinking their saviour has returned.  Until he gets laid out by Kronner, or has Franzen blow by him on his way to yet another GWG.

And Chief, I’m calling a penalty on you… 2 minutes for “boarding”.  That TURTLE at the Mile High News you RECOMMENDED to us as a decent Dive board is more cowardly then Floppa.  He talks the talk that he will come here and trash talk us here at A2Y, and yet I compliment his goalie, and ours, during the game (it was 1-0) and he insta-bans me.  No backbone or balls… like a TURTLE.

Honestly Chief, take a couple of minutes to realize, once a TURTLE (Dive media/blogger) always a TURTLE… none are worth our time.

Posted by VooX  on  04/27  at  11:54 AM

correction… it is Mile High Hockey not News… but it doesn’t really matter, the TURTLE their sucks, like they all do.

I am calling it now…

I’m no Forsberg fan, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that the guy is willing to play through pain. Otherwise, he’d have given up a long time ago and settled down in Sweden. To me, there no question that he’s got a high pain threshold.

I don’t think we should take Smyth’s words too literally. Forsberg will never be 100% again. He hasn’t been 100% for years.

This is no doubt all tied to his ankle. As someone else pointed out on an earlier thread, he’s got to compensate for his ankle and foot which leads to the groin issue. If his groin isn’t allowing him to compensate for his foot, he can’t play. It’s as simple as that. If a few day’s rest isn’t going to heal the groin or if skating is just going to re-injure it, his career is over.

Do I think he should just accept reality and say to his teammates, “I’m done. I can’t do it any more.”? Yes, I do. To keep up the drama is ridiculous.

Do I think he’s a coward for not playing through the pain? No. Everyone has a limit and he’s been pushing his for years.

Either he can play or he should just bow out. No more of this in between crap.

Posted by Matt Saler  on  04/27  at  12:10 PM

Forsberg lacks heart and balls.

Which makes sense.  Him playing for the Colorado Avagina, I mean.

Honestly Chief, take a couple of minutes to realize, once a TURTLE (Dive media/blogger) always a TURTLE… none are worth our time.

Shane the Adonis, the epitome of morality and reasoning has an interesting moment on Mile High Hockey: http://www.milehighhockey.com/comments/2008/4/26/62231/7859/83#c83

Here he decides to come clean and prove to the world that he is in fact none of the above.  Instead, it is quite clear Shane is nothing more than a high horse riding, arrogant, condescending prick.  His patronizing demeanor is nothing more than an act of double standards.

In the thread above Shane calls for the banning of our humble leader.  Why?  Not for breaking any rule at all.  IwoCPO was simply testing the waters by giving praise to Ozzy to see whether the curse of the mile high applies to ours equally.  Shane concludes by calling a ban on Chief, just “on principle.”

Thank you Shane, you are making this too easy.  Luckily no one reads your garbage blog anyway.

Posted by lilja4ever  on  04/27  at  12:31 PM

lilja4ever… i was so pissed at the TURTLE that I didn’t notice the Chief posting 10 minutes before I did, and got banned… it’s funny that he almost insta-banned the Chief too despite complimenting him in an earlier blog (even saying we had a good sense of humour, despite being “bitter").

I heard TURTLE tastes like CHICKEN.

Seriously Chief… you recommended these sh*t-stains?

I personally think you bring your “guns” out to Denver and ram their words down their necks… it is one thing to take swipes at our team, but cheap shots at your wife?  F**king artards.

Obviously, you weren’t reading this blog last Christmas.  Either that or you have a bad memory.

Or you’re gay…

O-joe,

A bit of column A, a bit of column B, and no column C.

VooX:

You’re letting the Vag-a-bloggers get under your skin.  This is the playoffs.  Everything is fair game.  Plus, it’s only good smack if there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.  The joke is on the Vaginite in this case.

I’ll also suggest that you thicken up your hide a little.  We may need you next round against the Dallas Stool fans.

Posted by O-Joe  on  04/27  at  02:39 PM

o-joe… I gotta thick skin, but I hate two-faced chickens, check that, TURTLES.  There are no cowards in the NHL playoffs, it is the law.

If they are gonna fire volleys at us (read the un-banned posters on these forums), at least have some cojones to take a little mortar fire.

They are not under my skin, they are on my “the cowards who must die” hit list wink I make one every playoffs.

Posted by VooX  on  04/27  at  04:50 PM

Just bought 5 tickets to Game 5 at the Joe… last time I was there me and my boys were so rowdy (clean, polite stuff) security didn’t know what to do with us… they literally threatened to toss us a dozen times.  When all the Wings fans in our section stood up for us, they started to back down, but were afraid nonetheless.

And that was just for the Preds.  Imagine the ruckus when the Dive, <spit>, are in town… let one of those Vag-alanche sit in front of me for this one… PLEASE.

He will get a full 60 minutes of the loudest Red Wings chants in his ear he has EVER heard… we are unrelenting.

Now if only that joke of a team can win one at home, so I can watch the Wings massacre the Avs again at JLA…

Posted by VooX  on  04/27  at  04:54 PM

I just wanted to remind everyone of a WFID prediction:

Even IF the Dive make the playoffs, Budaj and Theodore are going to be the cows in the velociraptor pen. The only thing left will be a stick and part of a blocker.

I really hope they start Josie and the Pussycats for Game 3. Run him out of net again. There’ll be excuses galore, but it doesn’t matter, the boys are tearing this guy limb from limb.

Posted by wingsfanindenver from 'lancheland  on  04/27  at  07:39 PM

Just an FYI for everyone, according to George James Malik via CBC, the Dive will indeed be starting 3/4 in Game 3.  So we know for a fact that we’ll put up at least a 4-spot Tuesday night.
