This has to be some sort of record. The Bucs just drafted the University of San Diego's Josh Johnson. Technically, that gives them seven quarterbacks on their roster.
But this move isn't totally unexpected. Coach Jon Gruden loves to collect quarterbacks and veteran starter Jeff Garcia's heading into the last year of his contract. Veteran backup Brian Griese isn't a long-term answer.
The Bucs aren't sold on young quarterbacks Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown. Then, there are two other guys who, obviously, aren't in Tampa Bay's plans.
The Bucs still hold the rights to Jake Plummer. He's retired, although he's never officially filed the paperwork. Finally, there's Chris Simms. Once a starter, Simms hasn't played a down since having his spleen removed in 2006.
The rest of the league has known for months that Simms was available for trade, but there have been no deals. Simms hasn't been taking part in offseason workouts with the team. Look for him to be released in the next few days.
