Eagles Get Instant Impact And More On Day One

Andy Reid was right: Anything can happen. Anything did happen on day one of the NFL draft for the Eagles, who made three trades, drafted two players, acquired a potentially-valuable reserve running back ... and who will barely pause before loading up with nine more draft picks on Sunday.

It was a strange and wonderful and, in the end, extremely productive Day One in the draft for the Eagles. For the second consecutive season they traded out of the first round, passing on the 19th overall pick and instead trading with Carolina and moving to No. 12 (43rd overall) in the second round. Andy Reid fielded the call while the Eagles were on the clock and accepted a payment of the second-round pick, a fourth-round selection and Carolina's first-round draft pick next year. The booty, heightened by the exclamation point of the No. 1 draft pick in 2009, was just too rich for the Eagles to bypass.

But that was just the start of a wild series of moves before the Eagles even picked a player.

Reid called his old buddy Bill Parcells in Miami and dealt a fourth-round draft pick to Miami for running back Lorenzo Booker (more on him later) and then went right back to the phones. The Eagles traded out of 43, moved back to 47, picked up another fourth-round draft pick in the process, and then waited until 47 rolled around.

At 47, the Eagles took defensive tackle Trevor Laws, a relentless defensive tackle who could be a great fit as a rotational player with starters Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley. The Eagles wanted a better presence with their inside pass rush, and they wanted to give Patterson and Bunkley more of a chance to catch their breath during the course of the game, and Laws seems to fit that need.

He had a tremendous career at Notre Dame and gives the Eagles more push, more power and some energy at defensive tackle. I have to say, I love this defensive line now. Maybe the Eagles can add a second-day defensive end whom they can develop, but there is some depth here and there is some front-line talent here and it is so promising.

Two picks later, the Eagles made the splash that adds more immediate impact. Cal's DeSean Jackson, projected as a top-15 draft pick a couple of months ago, lasted on the board forever until the Eagles made the pick at 49. It is hard not to be excited about Jackson. He was a game-breaking return man and wide receiver at Cal, and Reid called him a "pretty special" player in that respect. And, certainly, Jackson has a chance to make a significant difference on special teams, which, combined with some of the signings in the free agency period, should allow the special teams to make a vast improvement over last season.

Had you been told, prior to the draft, that the Eagles would have taken Jackson in the first round and a rock-solid defensive tackle in the second round, you would have been pretty happy, I think. Well, the Eagles drafted Jackson and Laws, brought in more speed and quickness and versatility with Booker and added a first-round draft pick in 2009.

Wow!

It was an unconventional way to go about things, but, hey, Reid is perhaps the most unpredictable head coach in the league during draft weekend. I just loved how things worked out, so let's go through some bullet points on how these players might fit in, some of the things that didn't happen and what might happen on Sunday.

  •  I'm really high on Booker. He comes into a crowded situation, and he isn't built to be a full-time halfback, but he has extreme quickness and speed and can, as Reid suggested, team with Brian Westbrook and create some nasty matchup problems for defenses. I know the Eagles loved Booker in the draft last year. I remember talking to scouts about him. Nabbing him for a fourth-round pick is a low-risk, high-reward deal.

"He's somebody we really liked in the draft last year and we couldn't pull it off where we were able to get him last year, but he's somebody we've had our eyes on," said Reid. "He does some of the same things that Brian Westbrook does. You can flex him out and throw him the football. I think that the combination of he and Brian on the field will really be a nice combination for our offense."

  • Laws comes in at a position that needed some competition. I still think Montae Reagor will be better than he was last year. I think LaJuan Ramsey understands the urgency of his situation. But let's be real: The Eagles had a lack of production behind Patterson and Bunkley last year. They didn't have any confidence in Reagor or Ramsey. Patterson and Bunkley played far too many snaps during the 2007 season. Laws doesn't come in as a starter, but he comes in as somebody who is expected to get on the field and contribute. Can he rush the passer inside? We'll see. My sense is that both Laws and Victor Abiamiri will get long looks in the nickel inside during the preseason games.
  • Jackson was just a shot-in-the-arm pick. How could the Eagles pass on that talent? For whatever reason, the slight Jackson -- he weighs around 170 pounds -- went from a projected first-round pick to a mid-second-round selection. The Eagles are glad he was there at 49. Jackson immediately vaults to the top of my unofficial depth chart -- the Eagles won't have an official depth chart until August -- and he'll learn the offense and will compete as a wide receiver. The Eagles are going to have to move Jackson around a bit to keep big cornerbacks from jamming him at the line of scrimmage, but there is no doubt he is a 4.3-40 player who adds needed juice to the offense.
  • What didn't happen was the trade of cornerback Lito Sheppard. It was the talk of the town, and more a matter of when will he get traded? rather than will he get traded? Sheppard is still here. Reid didn't rule out something happening on day two of the draft or in the weeks to come, but Sheppard is here and the secondary is deep and we have to see how it all pans out. As Reid said, the Eagles are not going to "give Sheppard away," but what can teams trade to the Eagles that makes sense? More draft picks for this year? Hardly. A No. 1 for next year?
  • The Eagles did not acquire a veteran wide receiver, as we all kind of knew going into the day. Still, I know a lot of fans held out hope. But don't do that. It isn't going to happen. Not now, anyway. Who knows what happens in the summer? I am not expecting it at all.
  • Bottom line, the Eagles added great quickness and a lot of speed to the offense. They made their defensive tackle rotation so much better. They set themselves up for a huge day on Sunday -- they have one third, three fourths, four sixths and a seventh-round pick -- with nine selections and where can they look? The truth is, everywhere. The Eagles believe that the strength of this draft is in the third, fourth and fifth rounds. Don't be surprised to see them move all around on day two. Tune in early on PhiladelphiaEagles.com.

It was a special day, really. That the Eagles were able to move out of the first round, pick up extra draft picks, including the coveted No. 1 next year, and still add impact for 2008 is really remarkable. The Eagles would have been happy to stay at 19 and take Pittsburgh offensive lineman Jeff Otah. They liked him. They liked him a lot. They liked a couple of other guys, too, and tried to move up.

But in the end, they loved the deal with Carolina. They could not turn down the offer. And it set things up for a remarkable day. How the players perform, well, that remains to be seen. Assigning grades and making projections is fool's gold, but it's fun. The Eagles deserve an "A" for effort and for creativity and, yes, for making the most of their assets in the draft.

Day two comes quickly, though. There is much more to come. As Reid said earlier on Saturday, anything can happen. It did on Day One, for sure. The Eagles were left standing with a package they couldn't even imagine when the draft started. Reid didn't know how it would all work before the draft, but he spearheaded an effort to remain as flexible as possible. It paid off. The Eagles worked the room, stayed patient, and had themselves quite a day, certainly one to remember.

Take a look at who didn't get drafted... Arrington? Roach? Will Arnold? Purify? Monk? We need to jump on these FA's. NOW!!! That'll be our next chat. Rookie FA's.

Think bout this... 3rd & 10. Cole, 1 of those 3 DT's, Reagor and Clemons on the line rushin the passer. Then #96 at MLB. And Lito and Samuel at CB. Brown in the slot. With #20 and Demps. Then either Mikell or Hansen. You gotta be kiddin! NO EFFIN WAY. === Or we rush 3. DT and Clemons and Cole. Then zone 3 deep with #20 as robber and Demps and Brown deep corners. With Samuel and Lito, Hansen, Mikell and #96 in 1/5th's! Seriously. Where you gonna go with it?

Bout the draft party... I would have invited everyone. But I couldn't invite acolvo. I would have had a hard time explainin why some dude from Tennessee that I had never met before... turned the Top of his head into a Plasma Sprinkler with a burst from my SKS cause the EAGLES didn't get a WR. I was just worried bout that. (There is a God... and he loves acolvo & DeSean Jackson! DJ doesn't even know he saved a Life this weekend! But God does!) I have enough problems with Police as is. Same Deputy came out to give a ticket for hunting without a license again. Like I asked him... What the Hell am I hunting? Air? Anyways these tickets are gettin toward 15 or so since I bought this place last year. You'd think I'd be able to do what I want on my land. Including shoot cops. But oddly enough thats against the Law. And oddly enough that guns not illegal like it is in every other state... here in Texas. I really thought I was in trouble when he asked to see that gun. Even thought ATF was comin... even after he left. Till drugs wore off. === Thats really why I like Texas. If I catch you on my land... I can shoot you. No questions asked. And here's the Best part. You know how people in some states have to "put down" their animals? Some have to take them somewhere to pay somebody to do it? In Texas... you can charge people! Cool huh? === Next year!!! Draft Party!!! And everyones invited!!! I go ahead and give directions now. Go out Capitol of Texas Highway. Off of Loop 1. Go out bout 10 miles to Quernavaca. Take a right. Just keep going. Bout 15 miles. Past the Lake. Follow the River. Then you'll see a white fence. From the start of that fence. Go 1.1 miles. I'm on the right. In that fence. CAN'T MISS IT!!! Two pillars with gargoyles on top. Beam runnin across. Wooden Sign that says... "El Rancho Starvo" ... Got Iron gates... With what some think is Pentagram on it. But is actually the "Star Man" from the Rush album cover 2112. At this point you should know the code. But for those of us that are slow... you push * then 2112. But the gates usually are open or broken so... just come on in. In case you get it confused with some other house with Gargoyles on top of posts out front by the Iron fence with a Rush album cover on it.... My Gargoyles have Cheshire Cat Grins. Ear to Ear. My Gargoyles are happy fellas. Anyway then you'll see a drive it pulls around to the left. Red Brick house. Green Metal roof. And it has a Giant EAGLES Flag on top. But... if Troll Boy or Gay Blue(Not convinced it's not the same dude) shows up. I'll kill ya. On sight. If I see a Yankees or Giants bumper sticker? .50 cal. Desert Eagle. Put a hole right through your Pinto's engine block. See right through it like you will your head. Oh.... Tough Talk. I get it now. === And on 1 final note before we head out to Yellow Rose to top this thing off... No Way Gay Blue and Cranky Yankee are the same guy. Yankee thoughts are at least well put. As Wrong and Insane as they may be. I think he's been edukated. However... Test-Tube Baby... That poor fella. We'll never hear from him again. Not after this draft. === Hope I didn't upset Yankee. By comparing him to Gay Blue. I apologize. No 1 should be compared to that Idiot. === And I have finally come to the conclusion that there are 2 people in this World that actually don't like me. jddilluzio and yankee. Not sure I'll get over this... But you guys are EAGLES fans(allegedly) so I guess you can come to my draft party too.

Odd that some say Dallas had good draft. Jenkins is a steal and Jones could be great. But all these cowboy fans are pissed. They screwed up as far as they and I are concerned. They got average players at best. 1st day for Cows? Great. 2nd day? HORRIBLE. Why in the Hell would you take 2 RB's when you already have starter? Scandrick? Just don't like those second day picks. But I never will when Jerry is pickin them. They did trade out and get some picks for next year. === Skins did well I thought. 1 of those WR's should turn out good. And you know I loved Rhinehart. === The Giants however... Somehow... Got worse. Kehl was the only guy I saw that was good pick. Phillips at 31? Ikeguono will have Manningham hiding behind the Refs again in '09. If you aren't EAGLES fan and feel bad bout your offseason.... Take a look at the giants before you hit the medicine cabinet.

Shreff.... Agreed on the order. I would have gone bout it differently. I wanted LT. 1st. But that 1st rounder... Thats a BIG pickup. Outside of JLong. I didn't really like the OT's this year. So I was heavily leaning toward gettin 1 1st round. Because I was for sure... whoever we got would need 1 year to grow. Williams, Otah or Albert would need at least a year. But next year? There's 2 OT's that are comin out. 2 GREAT 1's. I MEAN GREAT. And a possible 3rd. === The first time I saw Mike Oher was in the Army/Navy All American game bout 4-5 years ago in San Antonio. He played at... uh... can't remember. In Louisiana. But he started out at John Christian... The World Famous High School Power. Something like 275-30 since the school opened. 2 coaches in the 75 year History of the school. John Christian. And his son. I'm pretty sure thats the story. Got to see them play last in year in Longview. High School power here in Texas. Bobby Taylors High School. Back to my point... Oher was huge and just pounded people the whole game. Has since been named to that games ALL-TIME TEAM. Some good names on that roster believe me. But he went to OleMiss. Has started there for all 3 years and has given up MAYBE 2-3 sacks. Supposedly graded out at 90%. Which is basically Impossible. He was coming out last year and early mocks had him Top 10. To me he was the Only real LT. Even over Long. Long is great but... LT? not sure. I could be wrong. Oher was the only 1 that could come in and play at LT as rookie. IMO. But for some reason... He stayed in school. He's senior this year. 6'5'' 325. === Andre Smith. Alabama. 6'5'' and 350. If you have seen him play... You know. If you have not. Watch 1 game. And then you will know. He's a straight BEAST. And will come out this year. Junior this year. That guy is a Manimal. I don't care bout his technique or nothin. That guy can play. NFL prototype. === Another is Javario Burkes. I was at Nebraska Spring Game and heard lots of talk bout him. Only a Soph. But players said he was better than Nicks as True Freshman last year. I asked Barney Cotton (o-line coach) who was the best he had and he said... "That RT. He's our best. He might be gone." Meaning might go pro. 1 look at that guy and Yeesh! 6'5'' and 335. Knuckledragger. He's 1 Mammoth Human. === So in a way I was shocked buy no LT. We got those late round guys. Herremans. Andrews. They could all play LT. But we all know how REID likes lineman. And in No Way would I be shocked if they package somethin next year for 1 of those guys. I thought bout them earlier when thinkin O-line for '09. But knew we couldn't get them. We can now... with that 1st rounder. === Also the best WR maybe ever will be comin out. Sophmore from Texas Tech... 6'3'' and 235. Ran a 4.24. Recently. I had a friend watch him run that. Saw the time on the coaches watch... unbelieveable hands. We could make a move for him also. Mike Crabtree. Somethin like 2,000 yards and 21 TD's last year as Frosh. But thats in a major pass offense. Still mind bogglin numbers from from size and production. === Always got to think bout Future. But yeah I agree... Strange order of picks. But with the talent this year and next. That trade out of 1st round this year and last could be cornerstone of our Future. Kolb, Bradley. Then Oher next season. Or Crabtree. If you thought T.O. was somethin? Wait'll you get a look at this guy.

At this point... Suicide is my friend. I'll feel better after a nap. I missed the last few picks. Was outside tryin to melt my modified SKS with bout $700 bucks worth of ammo. It was gross. Got casings all over the place. Gonna have to hire somebody to pick them up. lol There are no animals within 100 miles of my house. Drugs. Whiskey. Automatic Weapons. Just go hand in hand. I hate to say that. But it's true. Anyways my EAGLES fan friends are all... uh... We are bad for each other. Sprayin 60 shells a burst while not being able to see straight... Toss in some hallucinogens... and shootin from the balcony... GREAT IDEA!!!

Now that I got rid of Troll... On to important things. Like... THE DRAFT. I was wondering where the small school guys were. But they came fast and furious there at the end. === Laws. I can't really say much bout him other than he kicks a** and gives 100% every play. As you know I wanted him. === Unbelieveable that DJ fell to us. What a steal. FO really came through that 1st day. Getting Panthers 1st rounder for Otah is beyond me. What the Hell were they thinkin? Laws and 1st rounder plus 1 of the starters we got 4th round? Maybe the best trade ever... under REID. I'll get back to that 1st rounder later. === Then the head scratch'r. Bryan Smith from McNeese St. (Ole McNeese St. I've had 3 battles with them. They got us twice and I'll take those to my grave. Freeze Option Team like Don McNabb led Syracuse squads) 3rd round was high. But not sure bout reach. He was 3rd to 5th rounder. IMO. All I'll say bout him is.... before you judge him. Watch him play. My friend sent me a game. And I TiVo'd another off of 1 of those Fox sports channels Vs. NW Louisiana..... er... Louisiana Monroe or whatever they are callin themselves today. Just put them away. Then 1 day I was chewin some Otter Pops and watchin Mayock's Goofball arse showing some film. He shows that guy from McNeese and my jaw dropped. Thats the fastest first step I've seen. He reminds me of Demarrio Williams who on 3rd down would rush the passer at DE at bout 215lbs. He was way quick!!! And had 7 sacks in 1 game that I remember. Ended up with bout 15. Just watch some tape of him before you drill him like Troll-Boy... I was thrilled to get him. But 3rd round was high. But he sure as Hell looks special to me. Also his weight? 232? 238 on Pro Day? Cole wasn't that much bigger. And Clemons isn't that much bigger now. But all three have 1 thing in common. SPEED. We are getting playmakers and SPEED on D. Which is what we needed. IMO. And this is an area I'll admit I don't know much bout. But as my friend pointed out.... Smith has the frame to carry 30 more pounds. Mayock said he was goin WS. Maybe. But he looks like DE to me. And they said Cole was tweener that might move. === What did Cole weight as Rook? I think it was bout 240. NE1? === Then came the 4th round. WOW! Q. Demps. All scouts had him as Top Ball Hawk. And I have talked bout him before. But as the draft unfolded I should have seen this 1. Great value at 4th round. He could have gone 3rd. Great ball skills. Not great tackler. But he had more knockdowns and INT than just bout anyone. Times are changin. They used to get guys that could tackle. Like Mike Lewis. But they look like they are going playmakers now. JJ still learning like us all. === McGlynn. Just a hammer. And as Bri pointed out... Can play OT. === Ikeguono? That to me is our best pick. He's another... I had pegged in my mock before last. That is 1 good CB. And he fits our system to the T. (Pressed Manningham into submission last year. Seriously. Manningham couldn't get past his press and 4th quarter got flustered and turned to yell at coaches or Ref or somebody during the play. JI planted his a** when he turned. My Michigan Friend showed me that 1 a while back. And I'm sure thats why Mario slipped. Well... That and bein a Liar.) NEways JI was a 1st round CB. But he spun his kneecap after declaring. Bad injury. ACL, MCL, PCL. But we have seen that before. Buckhalter. And he's fine. Seen 2-3 in college that came back from that 1. The miracles of Science. 20 years ago he'd be done. But to me he's great CB in '09. He's out for this year. === Then we traded a 6th for a 5th next year. Great move there. === Know nothing bout Cal O-line. NDSt LB guy. And I didn't know Wheaton was a school much less had a Ball TEAM with a player that was NFL caliber. Our needs? LT. DT. FS. WR. PR. And we just needed Pass Rush. Anyway we could get it. So we more than took care of DT. WR. PR. FS. And we got 2-3 pass rushers. === I'll give the draft a B. But knowing REID and Co. always take no name small college guys and turn them into pro bowlers.... better make it an B+. And toss in value and that Top 15 pick next year along with 5th... A.

I know who old crank yanker wanted to draft:First pick:Alex Rodriguez, cuz he's the cream of the crop when it comes to world championships,Second pick:Big Blue from Jersey, cuz he did say something about sleeping with her last night,Third pick:QB Erik Ainge from Tennessee, cuz he's the greatest quarterback from the Vols ever.Fourth pick:The recently dug up David Ortiz jersey, cuz he wants to put the curse on the Giants.Fifth pick:OT Winston Justice, cuz he can get a steal by re-drafting him in a lower round,Sixth pick:Coach Isiah Thomas, cuz maybe he can add more depth to the coaching staff, and maybe get the team shipped to his favorite town,Jersey, which will have another team they can call the New York-______ .Seventh pick:Traded to the NFL for Free Agent RB Shawn Alexander, cuz everyone knows he was an MVP 45 years ago.

Troll... $1000 bucks was for you tellin me where you learned bout game dumba**. So I guess I'll keep it. But I'm sure you could use it. Marketing? Sounds fun. Yeah I guess I'll keep it since no mention of your "knowledge" came with your ramblings... as you talked bout reading ones post 1st. So I shouldn't go on. But of course I will. === Lets start with my ME! I started for 4 years in High School. 1 year in Grand Island Nebraska. Then moved to Texas where I rushed for at least 1,200 yards (including a 1700 yarder my senior year) the 3 seasons I was there. Those were 10 game seasons. In the toughest distict in Texas - 125A. More Texas State Titles from those schools than any other. === Then I played 3 years and won 2 National Championship Rings at the University of Nebraska playin FB. Blockin for the likes of Lawrence Phillips and Ahman Green. Then after being 5th on depth chart I transferred to SFA in Nacogdoches Texas. Played 2 more years there. 1 year buttin heads with Jeremiah Trotter. Which wasn't fun. I played ball under former UCLA LB's coach John Pierce. Under argueably the best DC in college football History. Charlie McBride. THE BEST!!! O-line coach in History. Milt Tenopir. And maybe the Best College Football Coach Period. Tom Osborne. Thats just a few... Got an NFL tryout with Tampa Bay but it was justa "token shot" from Nebraska coaches with former Nebraska LB and DB coach Monte Kiffin runnin the D there. Had no shot to make the TEAM with Allstadt being there. But still was a last cut before the 85. But I have no doubt I could have played NFL ball had my heart been into it. Which it wasn't. I was as good as Makovicka brothers and Kelsay brothers that did play in NFL. In fact Chris still does with Buffalo. === Then after doing some things my heart was into for a coupla years. Went to work for my brother. He worked for NASA developing sound systems. Worked for him for 3 years. And made enough money to buy 300 acres outside of Austin TX. I'll never move. I'll always live here and love it. And I doubt I'll ever work again. If the right offer comes I might do it. You get to travel alot and I've seen just bout everything I wanted to. === You and another did call me Tool. Good. Glad you read my posts. But since you've been readin on here.... 50 others have said how they enjoy the things I say. And I speak my opinions and more. If you don't like it... Sorry, Don't read'em. But I got some friends on here. And we talk bout all types of stuff. And we try to swing each other opinions but they all stay the same. But regardless of how... we all are wanting the same thing. EAGLES SUPER BOWL. Makes for good conversation. So I'm just gonna take a wild guess... You've never stepped foot on a Football Field. How am I psychic? I'm not. Just can tell by your ignorant remarks. And so I'll make another offer to ya. I'll bet you my house and land. Hell... I'll toss in my cat, cows and pet snakes if you know more bout FB than me partna' === Talk tough? Not sure where you get that. I'm a nice guy always been. But... make no mistake. If you were to get on my bad side. I'll say what the Hell I want to your face. I've kicked the a** of... and had my a** kicked by a bunch of guys tougher than you. Better stay in the bed and play... === Oh... and have fun at work tomarrow.

I LOVE these picks so far,and to add an extra 1st rounder next season,is amazing.I can't belive the Panthers gave up a 2nd (#43),a 4th(#109),and a 1st rounder for 09.This also proves to me that the Eagles made a strong effort for Chad Johnson.I'm sure Reid offered our two 2nds (at the time,#43 and #49),as well as our first round pick for 09,and Cincy wouldn't tkae it.It just all adds up,and when our time was up for #43,we just switched with the Vikings for more time to deal with Cincy, like adding Lito, and taking back the first rounder for 09.When they wouldn't budge,we pulled the trigger on Laws, and 14 minutes later,my man DesEan Jackson.I love this draft, and I hope that we keep Lito now. We're gonna be very tough to beat this season. All phases (Defense,Offense, and Special Teams)have greatly improved. This may be the best Eagle team of the McNabb era.I'm gonna go back and look player to player from the 05 team, and see if we've got them beat, but at this point,I belive so.

Hey cranky yanky,..we could care less what a man does for a living here. What's important to us is what he has to say about eagles football and football in general. It's clear to this reporter that your knowledge of our team is limited, although we always welcome opinion that is balanced and well thought out. I posted awhile ago why the pick for DT was a priority and the pick was superb, prob the 3rd best DT out there. Perhaps, you should read it. Secondly, our return game was mediocre at best. There was a clear need to improve IMMEDIATELY which is what we did. Additionally, it gives us some fun options in the passing game,..and at pick 49...brilliant. Desean was rated by the same experts as you quote near the top. And thirdly, I will concede some disappointment in their third pick, but I'm open minded to see where it might lead us. Obviously, if it doesn't work out, somebody will have to answer for it. At first, I felt it was a draft for some other team. When that wasn't the case, the only thing that made sense was that he was targeted by another team b4 the next eagles pick. Again, i hope he is player. In summary, actually all your positions were addressed and then some. And we got some great picks for next year if we wait that long. The season has just begun.

HEY JEROME...I'd take that $1000 of yours...but I don't accept bottlecaps. Since your lazy a** supposedly retired from Burger King at 33 (LOL!!!!) I'm sure that's all you have. Love how you try to talk tough on here too. It's always the nerds who are afraid of their own shadow that think they're tough on a chat board. If you were in front of me I guarantee you wouldn't say a peep!! LOL!! Now back to football...your retort to my last e-mail was as lame as your 400 clearly uneducated posts! I'll say it one more time. The first trade they made was fine...they got value. However they didn't NEED a DT. They NEEDED a S, OT, WR and DE!! The second trade they made was just plain stupid when a guy like Ty Johnson...the best safety in the draft was there. Their pick of that 230lb DE was totally ridiculous...he's a poorer version of Clemmons....and Zuttah out of Rutgers was still there for the taking. Also, when I said he was projected late rounds...that wasn't an opinion like YOU gave...unlike YOU, I was quoting SCOUNTS INC on ESPN!! The Eagles overall did what they usually do during the draft....average work with plenty of head scratching decisions...even from their own beat writers. They are fooling themselves to think that they don't have needs to fill. Dallas is already better and had a better draft. Washington had a great draft. NYG had an average draft but they are a better team. All of THAT is opinion and nobody will know who came out on top for a few years till these kids develop....although since you clearly have no life and nothing better to do, you'll argue that YOU know better. I already saw another dude on here call you a tool...and I'm seconding that notion. Now that the draft is over, I have no need to be on here debating with the likes of you...I own a marketing company and have work, a chick and a life. You should try to grab yourself all three if you can! LOL!!!!!! (this is where you insert many moronic comebacks, puff out your chicken chest and try to act tuff and waste everyone's time with your blathering. Ready, set......go!)

jmkolter, why would you want the eagles to be in a rebuilding phase? if anything, 08-09 is our best shot at the championship. i couldnt be more pleased with how the draft turned out, i really like panthers 09 1st round choice. they will have a bad season, we get a really high pick, and grab an amazing player. the eagles staff spent so much time scouting and doing their homework. they know what they are doing, and just cuz you havent heard of them before, you think they suck. if you never heard of them, do some research before making any judgment calls. you're the only person on this message board that hates the outcome of our draft.

im pretty happy with this draft. we get a good group of guys to compete. and lorenzo booker pretty happy about that too. the better the backfield the better our receivers are. and im a fan of the OT late, i mean, we could have gotten some early too but i think they were really pulling for williams and couldnt get him. and that first rounder next year, very useful...could be trait bait. if not we get 2 good guys in 1st next year. i also like jackson. he will def help out in the return game. and one thing that i like, but prob doesnt mean that much is that hes been working with rice on route running, etc for like 2 months. he can do that all he wants in my book, only make him better. i really like the secondary work that we did, i think ikegwuonu will be great next year and demps, very bright future IMO. i think that if jackson puts on 10-15 pounds and keeps his speed, he will be very valuable in the future. and we keep lito for now. im happy for now.

I will give this draft a B at best. Trevor Laws is an A- to me. Good player who will start in a year or 2 and gives depth at DT and DE witch is a +.DeSean Jackson takes a B+. He takes care of the return problems but as a WR he may be just to small at 178 pounds and 5'10 or 6'0 feet. Im sure he is 5'10 but the eagles front page and NFL.com says 6'0 foot but his pro day im sure he was 5'10. But still to small to be that guy. Un less he pulls some steve smith ****off. Quintin Demps is the steel of our draft if you ask me. He is a ball hawk and will play well when dawkins steps down. I give him a B. Mike McGlynn and Bryan Smith get a C+. And the rest get a C at best. Geting Lorenzo Booker makes the running back fighting looking good. West36, Buck, Hunt, Booker, Moats thats going to be fun to see. They run with 3 RBs every year but this year I see 4. Moats will get cut. Next year Buck will be gone then they will run with 3 RBs. And my thoughts on Lito is that unless it is for the big time WR we need to keep him. Im new to posting thought it looked fun. I will start off by saying what I think. So there it is.

jnschreffler- you should be worried about the future of our WRs and FS. We have the worst receiving core in the NFC east, the worst TE in the NFC east and our FS is going to be gone in a year or two- so what did they do? They gave away their first pick!!! Apparently, our 8-8 team is so good that we can keep players we don't need like Lito and we can give away our most important picks. Look whatever you are concerned about now, you will always be concerned about because the eagles management doesn't have the will to improve. They are riding the success we had when the NFC east was weak and ignoring the fact that our average over the past 3 years was 8-8. I wish I had the ability to drink the green I just used the EMB's #1 Cliche, but watching this team deteriorate is painful.

Hashish,..no offense,.but yur take on these draft issues trouble me. Admittedly, I do feel unsettled about the 3rd round pick. And that the knee injury and law problems certainly are issues to be addressed. But, I can almost guarantee you that they will play in the NFL. Moreover, Jack I. was a projected 1-2 rd pick. We will hear about him, sir,in the future. Regarding Morelli...ah,.he's a stiff..and I should know,..I'm a huge PSU fan who's been following the team b4 you were born. I don't think Ive ever seen a more inconsistent QB,..and he's played that way every year there. Bottom line=he stinks.

Overall, my opinion is that the Eagles did a good job at getting a player for positions that are in need and I thought the top ones were Safety,Offensive tackle,Wide Receiver,Corner, and Kick Returner; but I do not like the order with which they went ahead and drafted those players in.My opinion was that OT and S were the positions that needed to be addressed first and they werent addressed until the fourth round. That being said, I think McGlynn will do good on our line and I like the speed of Demps. I like how they went and got some pash-rushing LB's in Smith and Studebaker (Thinking about some 3-4 formations this year?)So overall,I give their draft a B- or C+ because I dont think they addressed things in the right order but they did at least try and we have 2 first rounders next year.So all in all, I am confident in the team we are putting out on the field next year with a healthy McNabb,Westbrook,L.J., very deep O and D lines, young and fast LB's, and the best group of Corners there is in the NFL. I still wonder how the Lito thing is going to turn out but it looks more and more like he is staying which is find by me. I'm just still concerned about our wide receivers and the future of the OT and FS...

I can't beleive how this draft unfolded over the past two days. i think we all better get used to the idea that the Phillies, sixers and flyers will be better than the eagles for a long time to come. I would have hoped that the eagles would have committed to either rebuilding or going for broke, but they didn't do either. Instead they got a bunch of undersized, underwhelming guys most of whom I have never heard of. Man what a bad day for eagles fans.

I think Smith and Ikeguono were big time reaches. These guys were projected as late round draft picks if they got drafted at all. Smith division 2 player @ 228 lbs, that's tiny for a LB let alone a DE. Ikeguono had a poor 07 season, trouble with the law and most importantly a blown out knee. I doubt we hear about him again. These guys are good projects for the 6th and 7th rounds but not in the 3rd and 4th where there are still a lot of good picks left on the board. Anthony Morelli still on the board, bigtime arm, maybe a good developmental QB, hope the Eagles take him with the last pick.

Yeah Taylor is a beast and he'll split time with Glennon...Beamer seems to be managing that much better than Marcus Vick/Bryan Randall...he would completely interrupt our game flow when he used to manage those 2. We've got Kenny Lewis, Elan Lewis, Oglesby. We also have Devin Radford, Jahre Cheeseman (converted CB) and Dustin Pickle...don't see them doing much but who knows. Our recruit is Ryan Williams...supposed to be a stud he's the 3rd ranked running back in the nation by Rivals.com. Im just saying we are Eagles fans were not that lucky. But realy what are the odds the eagles draft WR again. They will run with 5 so that will leave Brown, Curtis, DeSean, Basket and.... Lewis and avant will fight it out. Hey they might draft a WR put then it will be Lewis avant or (insert name here) fighting for the fith spot. And if they trade for a WR than they have 8 WR unless one of them is traded for the big time wide out so we will see. I just dont see how great players cme out of the 7th round. My dad did it. His brothers did it. We did it at Nebraska. We did it at SFA. At DT we got Bunk/Patt. But you need 3rd guy as good as both starters. I always called them swing DT. Or swing G. Meaning that guy was a starter but was 3rd. At Nebraska they gave them Blackshirt as starter but they were 3rd. He backed up both DT's. Laws is our Swing DT. With Reagor and Ramsey or Howard. But now days they have positive pass rushers. So the Smith move makes since to me. Cole with Abiamiri or Parker with the other as Swing DE. Then Clemons and Smith comin in on pass when Cole and Parker need break. I doubt Abiamiri will be 3rd down guy. I doubt Clemons or Smith will not be 3rd down guy. But that way everybody is fresh. So I like it. But I've liked Smith for a while. 3rd round was too high. Unless you feel he's good Passrusher. Which I do. === All I know is we are loaded. From where we were last year. === If we take DE. Then Smith is OLB. If we take OLB then Smith is DE. But I've never seen Smith without his hand on the ground. I don't think. I've got a game or 2. And of course will watch them soon. But he was DE. So was Gocong. So who knows? But I posted on here a month ago I would love to get Smith. He's so fast off the edge... Just jumped out to me. === Obviously ST'r. === We'll see.

6 of my Hokies off the board! Gotta love that 'cept none of 'em went to the Igs. Look for Vince Hall to go in the 6th. Justin Harper wouldn't be a bad pick at WR...6'3" 1/2 but I don't see that as a need for us right now. Surprised we haven't made any more trades to this point, wondering if we'll sit on that Carolina 1st rounder of '09 or package it with Lito or something. I don't know why Carolina would trade that pick, basically indicating they think they can win now...with no QB (Delhomme coming off Tommy John surgery and Moore is still unproven, especially to take a team far).

Ikegwuono is a nice pick if he can recover from blowing out his knee. I think smith was a pretty big reach and it's tough seeing him fit in well unless he can put on a good amount of weight. Where does he fit in? A 235 lb defensive end? I guess we can use him as a situational pass rusher or maybe try to use him as a pass-rushing linebacker and hope he contributes on special teams?
