Notebook: Injuries a concern
Last Modified: Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 11:04 p.m.
Florida escaped from The Swamp Saturday night with a win, but not with a clean bill of health.
Senior receiver Andre Caldwell suffered a knee injury during the second half of the Gators 59-31 win over Troy and will undergo an MRI. Coach Urban Meyer said he was told the injury is not believed to be serious.
"Bubba has an MCL," Meyer said. "He's going for an MRI but they're telling me he'll be fine for next week."
Caldwell wasn't the only Florida playmaker injured Saturday. Sophomore Brandon James suffered a sprained ankle in the second half, and Jarred Fayson was shaken up late in the third quarter after being slammed to the turf by a Troy defender after taking an option pitch from Tim Tebow. Fayson later returned to the game.
Meyer said he is concerned about the injuries.
"That's obviously a major, major deal," he said. "That's a major component to our scheme."
Meyer said sophomore Percy Harvin, who has been battling tendonitis in his Achilles', now has soreness in his knee.
Nonetheless, Harvin had four rushes for 56 yards and three catches for 42 yards.
Troy bus involved in accident
Troy's defense almost didn't make it to The Swamp Saturday after it's bus was involved in an accident on Interstate-75. And it was a car of Florida fans that was responsible.
The Trojans were traveling north on I-75 from their team hotel in Ocala Saturday when several cars carrying Florida Gator fans drove along side the Trojans buses, Troy sports information director Ricky Hazel said. One of the cars abruptly cut off the bus carrying Troy's defensive players. The car hit the bus and careened off the Interstate. One of the state troopers escorting the Troy caravan stopped while the buses continued northbound.
"I guess they were trying to take out our defense," Hazel said.
Texas defensive end visits Gators
One of the top defensive ends in the country made an official visit to Florida Saturday.
Chancey Aghayere, a 6-foot-4, 244-pound native of Garland, Texas, was at Florida Field to watch Florida's 59-31 win over Troy.
Meyer was seen speaking with him on the field prior to the game and also introduced Aghayere to Emmanuel Moody, another Texas native. Moody transferred from Southern Cal to Florida several weeks ago.
New quarterback for the Gators
Florida found a new quarterback Saturday. If only for a few plays.
Senior receiver Andre Caldwell lined up at quarterback for the first time in his collegiate career.
On his first snap early in the second quarter, he ran for two yards. Later in the drive, Caldwell took a shotgun snap and ran 18 yards for a touchdown.
Homecoming for the Voice of the Trojans
Barry McKnight has waited 35 years to get into the press box at Florida Field. On Saturday, he finally did.
McKnight calls the play-by-play for Troy radio and, coincidently, was a student at Florida from 1980 to 1984. His Gator ties run deep.
As a kid, McKnight attended Doug Dickey's's football camp. His parents, grandparents and his brother and sister also attended Florida.
"This is a great feeling," McKnight said during halftime of Saturday's game. "There are a lot of emotions."
Etc.
Florida blocked two punts Saturday and has now blocked 14 kicks under Meyer. "To hear a stadium come completely unglued when you block a punt, that's special," Meyer said. ... Florida's streak of scoring on eight consecutive drives ended when Caldwell fumbled in the third quarter. ... The 59 points scored by Florida was the second highest under Meyer. Florida scored 62 against Western Carolina last year.
