The 49ers tried to force the Raiders from Oakland

In the late 1960s, a decade before Al Davis would take football away from the city of Oakland, he along with then owner Wayne Valley saved football in Oakland. As the American Football League was negotiating its merger with the National Football League the San Francisco 49ers tried to bribe or force the Oakland Raiders out of the Bay Area market. Davis and Valley stood fast, and the Raiders entered the NFL as the Oakland Raiders.

The following is an excerpt from the book Slick:The Silver and Black Life of Al Davis by Mark Ribowsky

(Al) Davis wasn't through there, either--and, as became apparent to (Wayne) Valley, Al's help was invaluable to the very continuance of the Oakland Raiders. Goaded by the 49ers, NFL draftsmen had included in the merger agreement sixteen unconscionable demands of the Raider franchise. Some of these were the right to oversee Raider schedules to avoid head-to0head competition, control over which NFL teams the Raiders would now play, and some 49ers games to be played at the Coliseum. Apparently, the 49ers--and the NFL--meant for these interdictions to force the Raiders out of the Bay Area.

"The NFL had come to me before that, through a liaison, about the possibility of convincing the Raiders to move to Seattle," George Ross recalled. "They were using the 49ers' share of the indemnity as a bribe--they'd give it up if the Raiders moved. I said go to hell. And then, right at the end of the merger, the 49ers went to the NFL with the same idea, to get the territory for themselves."

Valley, Davis, and Sonny Werblin, standing firm, scared the NFL out of holding on to the demands.

That was a pretty drastic move on the part of the Niners, trying to exert their control over the Raider franchise, especially considering at that time the Raiders were a highly successful franchise, and the Niners not so much. Granted, the Niners likely never expected to get that control, instead were pushing for the Raiders to play elsewhere.

Had they been successful, the NFL landscape would look much different. For one thing, the success of the Raiders' years of domination can be attributed to the special synergy between the Raiders and their fans in the East Bay. The Seahawks would have never come into being.

Ultimately, the reward that Wayne Valley gave Al Davis for his aid in preserving the Raiders during this tumultuous time-partial ownership of the team-would ultimately be Valley's undoing as owner of the Raiders.

This story really shows how the NFL felt superior to the AFL and they were attempting to subjugate the AFL franchises into a sort of NFL apartheid. Big Al is a big part of why that didn't work and the entire NFL as it stands today, owes him a debt of gratitude.

All you dombasses out there who don't get how the NFL is biased against the Raiders need to check the history instead of popping off at the mouth. Jason in Pleasanton, I would be happy to give you a history lesson in the Coliseum parking lot. Just look for the guy that has his foot on your face.

Interesting! I have a program guide form the 1966 season featuring "The New Coluseum" story. Inside are players like Jim 00 Otto, WO Freddie - B, QB Tom Flores, LB Dan Conners from Pleasanton and.... QB's coach Bill Walsh (working for Al Davis!) Remind the Phoney Whiners that Bill worked for Al in 1966! Check it out!

Can't really blame the Niners. They were scared shitless of the Raiders back then. And they were scared of their success stealing all of the fan base in the Bay Area. Desperate times require desperate measures. Shady little bastards.

It seems rather unfortunate that Valley ended up getting ousted by the very man (AD) that helped keep the team in Oakland. That seems a bit shady too actually. Lot's of shady to go around it would seem.

It never amazes me how Raider fans always look for something to cling on to. "Oh my god, 42 years ago.......", "Gruden knew our offense......" so on and so forth. Shut up already. All Raider fans like to call 9er fans "whiners", but take a look at all of these posts. You have all truely earned the moniker of "Haters".

On another note, I was at the Charger game last year, sitting in the "Black Hole" and it was pretty tame. I definetely see more fights at 9er games. You see, there is this false sense of being "bad guys" because of the Raider colors. OOoooo, Silver and Black. You guys are a bunch of Barbara Streisand ticket holding sons of Dorothy. Since when is a bunch of fat guys wearing make-up scary? lol. Get over yourselves. The Eagles have the rowdiest fans in the league. Period.

You've got nothing to hang your hats on now. The funny thing is how L.A. is starving for an NFL team to be there, but there was NO SUPPORT when the Raiders were there. That's pathetic. I know that beggars can't be choosers, but that is just pathetic.

Holler at my B@lls.

Ole Roger lets the Pats and Colts play every year, I don't know why he doesnt do a non-divisional rivalry game every year with the obvious teams (i.e. Eagles and Steelers, Cowboys & Texans, etc.) I would love to beat the 49ers asses every year. And I know we havent been good lately, but Jason if you think that 49er fans have more to look forward to than Raider fans then you are one of many San Franciscoans that are smokin the bologna pony. I'll take Jamarcus, McFadden, Asamougha and our crew over Smith, Gore and Clements any day. Not only would the Raiders beat the Niners I dont think it would even be very competitive. At least the Giants are good and the A's suck, that gives you something to hold on to. Oh, wait thats right the OAKLAND A's are good and the SF Giants suck. What do you guys across the Bay actually have to look forward to?

Who cares how many fights are in the stands? I'll tell you who. Losers, scum, trash, criminals and you. It took several years to get rid of that gang crap from L.A. and the image that came with it. The first 3 years back in Oakland were ugly. Now it is a great place to take your family. Unlike that criminal infested area of S.F. at candlestick, you can safely walk in the area during game days. I sit in the front of the South Endzone, the "Black Hole", we dont' want or need losers that can't control themselves at games, you will be dealt with by security and the people that come to each and every game. Rain or shine, win or lose, we are there. Here are the local rules in the black hole; stand up, yell and scream when Raiders are on defense. Shut up when Raiders have the ball. If you drink, make certain you can handle what you consume. Have a little resect for yourself and others. We who are at each and every game are not tolerant of idiotic behavior. There are stupid people at all football games. Never have true Oakland Raiders fans lived up to the thug image. We are loyal Raiders fans who work hard, play hard, take care of our friends and families like no other. We do not care about you. Its the Raiders, not other teams nor their fans, nor the media. We do what we do. If you are not with us, you are against us.

I was against the pro football merger because it meant the demise of the American Football League as a corporate entity. Gone was this great league's name, logo, and identity.

I will always maintain that Mr. Wayne Valley, not Al Davis, was the greatest Oakland Raider of all time. Mr. Valley was a native Oaklander who believed that pro football could succeed in the East Bay and bring pride to its citizens.

Hey jjraiders....

Great post!!! I've been part of Raider Nation since 1976....I've seen the Raiders in person twice...both times at Orchard Park.....I expect to be in Cal next season on vacation, and can't wait to see them.

You've provided the image that so many raider-haters would like the world to believe is not true.....

Being a Raider fan is like no other....it's true...it's real...you can dress up....and it's a whole lot of fun.

That's what XFL wanted.....and we have it!

NFL Football + Great Fan Base + A Whole Lot of Fun = The Oakland Raiders.

Its funny how whiner fans look at their win streak as if they were the only ones with a dynasty. In our 48 years we have 3 world championshipsl, AFL championships, AFC west titles, all included equals 24 different titles. You gays, I mean guys had a 30 year head start. and we still have more titles than you. And as a proud member of the black hole i too find it kind of not cool how all those peoole dress up, but thats how you guys get down up there never the less RAIDER FANS 4 LIFE. And although I dont agree with the fights, its necessary to check all of the haters from time to time, just to let you know where you at.

Again, LMAO at all you little "wannabee's". You guys scream "If I ever take off this apron, you're in big trouble, buddy...get him, Mom"

Amazing on how little most of you actually know about your team, or the bay area.

First off: Patrick?? "Had they been successful, the NFL landscape would look much different. For one thing, the success of the Raiders’ years of domination can be attributed to the special synergy between the Raiders and their fans in the East Bay. -

"special synergy"?? Is that what it was?? OH..I SEE..what you're saying is what I've been saying. Since the Raiders got back, the fan support SUCKS. Since the Raiders left in '01, in over a quarter of a CENTURY, the fans in Oakland (few that there be) have not tasted victory, and, according to YOU, it's because that "synergy" is but a memory??

You might be right..team fell into the abyss right about the time the fans bailed, and never returned.

MadRoadPuppy: The 49ers should leave the Bay Area for Las Vegas "

Tsk tsk, Puppy. The Niners own the bay. The NFL wants the Niners in the bay area. Niner fans continue to sell out our ancient stadium. The Raiders? Does anyone, honestly, care what happens with that dysfunctional team? Or it's backasswards owner? Seriously..do you? Even raider fans are blase..accepting the fact no one wants the Raiders.

Read it again..NO ONE wants that sorryass team.

There is not a city in the COUNTRY that would welcome the Raiders. ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE NFL cities without teams would gladly take..but not the Raiders.

Can you figure out why...on your own?

-

ken from Modesto:QB’s coach Bill Walsh (working for Al Davis!) Remind the Phoney Whiners that Bill worked for Al in 1966! Check it out!""

LMAO..you haven't been following football very long, have you? That ancient news you JUST found out about? Good one, Gomer.

Oh, uh..yeah...Walsh worked for Al.

Al stupidly didn't see in Walsh what Debartelo did.

Al stupidly watched, all bitter as hell, as Walsh turned into a widely aclaimed "GENIUS" while turning the Niners into a powerhouse dynasty that the Raiders never came close to.

Yeah..just another one of Al's "coaching gaffes".

Way to set yourself up there, Kenny, lol.

--

LDizzle says: Can’t really blame the Niners. They were scared shitless of the Raiders back then."""

You constantly abuse the right to be stupid, Ditz.

It's called marketing dollars. How in the hell can the Niners be afraid of a team they don't play? Leave it to yet another Raider fan to state "They were afraid of us". You will find NO WHERE comments from other teams about being afraid of playing the Raiders.

The Niners??

completely different story.

In the 80's, and first 5 years of the 90's there are umpteen comments from other teams who state loud and clear "They kicked our ass, and there was nothing we could do about it. At one point we were so confused we had no idea at all what they were going to do." Now, to clear it up for ya, Ditzle, they were afraid of our high powered team, not what silly little Raider fans hang their purse on, which is "We's badasses...yep yep...dey's afraid of us..go ask my sister..she'll tell ya."

RaiderB whined: This story really shows how the NFL felt superior to the AFL and they were attempting to subjugate the AFL franchises into a sort of NFL apartheid. Big Al is a big part of why that didn’t work and the entire NFL as it stands today, owes him a debt of gratitude.

All you dombasses out there who don’t get how the NFL is biased against the Raiders need to check the history instead of popping off at the mouth."""

Debt of gratitude? LMAO..he SOLD OUT THE AFL. yeah..maybe YOU should go read up. He did to the AFL what he's done to the team, to the city of Oakland, to the city of LA, and TO YOU FANS..HE SCREWED THEM OVER.

Speaking of popping off at the mouth?

And please..save that silly little snivel about "baised against the Raiders...damn..Raider fans have fine tuned the fine art of WHINING. "all those big meanies keep picking on us"..Honestly, you guys are embarrassing as football fans, regardless of the weak team you "profess" to support.

Hmm, Mikey is a usual idiot, so won't bother with his whining.

As for the others, I'll ask you, how strong were these whiners, for the first 40 years of your existence?

Absolutely pathetic. No Championships, until the 1981 season....we had 2 titles before your club got on the board!

And now, the whiners are stuck with an owner who could care less about the talent....with a guy who's rivalling Ryan Leaf for worst first round pick possible.

What's next, try to bring drunkenmiller out of retirement?

This sounds about normal for the NFL, back before the merger...after all, it was fair game to attack other clubs....we lost out on Roman Gabriel to the Rams, but in the long run, it was Al's attacks on the NFL that forced the merger....otherwise, Rozelle probably would have had a problem fielding teams, in dwindling markets.

And moving the whiners to Las Vegas...sounds like a good idea....or mexico city.

Dude??? YOU'RE SO FULL OF CRAP..lol...geez..who do you think YOU'RE fooling?

First off..it's a known fact the top two stadiums that has fights are Philly and Oakland...and IT'S ALSO A FACT THAT 98% OF THE FIGHTS IN OAKLAND ARE RAIDER FAN AGAINST RAIDER FAN..so save that stupid "Here's our rules." Again, who do you think you're kidding? What? You patrol the area? You go from section to section keeping people in line?

And "criminal infested area at candlestick"?? Again, laughing my ass off at your intimidated sorry take.

That's the DUMBEST thing I've seen sniveled by a Raider fan in a longass time. Even Raider fans aren't touching that with a 10 foot pole. Yeah..dude..SF's now the unsafe place, while that wonderful environment in Oakland is so family friendly, lol...geez..that was dumb. here's a reality check for you..you don't sell out because opposing team fans stay away because dumbass Raider fans threaten their families, insult their kids, along with the hundreds of reports of things being thrown at them..INCLUDING THE KIDS..so don't even run that sorry take..no one, as in NO ONE is buying it.

Besides..didn't you say you sat in the front of the section? So, in other words, you don't have a clue on what's actually going on anywhere, do you?

Yeah..didn't think so.

And while they like to talk about the present, we've been to the super bowl in 2002, almost 10 years AFTER the last time the whiners were there.

So, ask yourself the question....San Fran.....built for the long haul,or a long fall? Looking pretty lean, these last years.

And idiotic, offering Rice a million to retire, talk about insulting football.

Wait, the niners aren't the only team in the Bay Area??? I thought the Raiders played in LA... All I know is the silver & black has gotten smacked the last two times the niners have played the haters. Raiders fans like to hate on the niners because that gives them something to do so they don't have to focus on how pathetic their team is and how they haven't won anything since 83 and the last time they were in the superbowl it was a onesided embarrasment which prompted Raider fans to intelligently burn down their own city... You have a senile, drunk old goat making football decisions, ya'll had the worst run defense in the NFL and Glenn Dorsey luckily fell to the Raiders and the Raiders draft Darren McFadden when they already have 4 rb's LOL... Laughing stock of sports.... Oh yeah, I heard Jarmarcus Russell looks more and more like Langston Hughes, what's he up to 350 bills?

Mike49er: Leave it to a Raider fan to still use his fingers to count. Ok, on your own..from '81 to '98 is how many years?? Take your time, moron. Oh..fool..during that period, the Niners set an NFL RECORD FOR 17 STRAIGHT SEASONS with 10 or more wins..dumbass.

BTW..speaking of Bill Walsh..how dumb, exactly, was Al Davis letting Bill Walsh leave? lol..

BTW..when was the Raiders last hurrah? 1983. This year will make it a QUARTER OF A CENTURY that the Raiders have failed to win a Super Bowl. 25 years, THIS YEAR, lol..

Can you count that high?

-------

Raiders have more players in the Hall with about 20 less years in the business - please. Maybe Jeff Garcia, Garrison Hearst or Frank Gore will get in the HOF - LMAO! hahahah!

Mike49er: Again..are you stupid, or just slow? Players in HOF?? Both teams have 11. Sorry, you don't get to count players like Ronnie Lott, Lofton, Brown, etc.

Let me guess? You're a soccer fan, right? Football is kind of new to ya?

Oh..and 20 years less? Let me guess? You dropped out of school because "It wasn't cool'?? Niners came into the league in '50, Raiders in '60.

Do the math.

Get help if you can't figure it out on your own.

-

Whiner fans are a total joke. Take your wine and cheese somewhere else. Why are you even here. I know… how about go tailgate at a Stanford game… another bunch of losers

Mike49er: Niner fans support their team. Raider fans suck at supporting their team.

Niners stadium is the oldest in the league, and broken down. Niner fans don't care. We still show up, and support our team. almost 70,000 seats and HAVE SOLD OUT FOR 26 STRAIGHT YEARS.

Raiders upgraded the stadium..Raider fans STILL couldn't sell out. Raiders then closed off Mt. Davis, bringing your seating total down to 63,000 and you joke fans STILL can't sell out.

Never compare Raider fan to Niner fan. There is no comparison. You're the joke of the NFL for a reason.

it's not an opinion, it's a fact. You're laughed at because you're the butt of all jokes, and it's not likely to change.

You moron Raiders' fans keep bringing up the gay population, but if you look at statistics LA has more gay people per capita than any other city in America.

Also reading from the comments. Raider's fans were quick to start with the personal attacks and name calling. This is what happens to stupid people who get stuck in a corner without a leg to stand on. You raiders fans need a hug.

I think the Oakland fans are just jealous that their dirty filthy city gets no attention, and their team is pathetic, with a senile owner. They despise the 9ers (oh wait, i forgot, im talking to oakland raider fans here) they HATE the 9ers cuz of all the winning and all the glory years. g-l-o-r-y (n) great honor, praise. Sorry, u gota talk to sloooow to these raider fans. most of them havent graduated from high school. Oh, and by the way, come down to candlestick wearin your raider jersey talkin smack u little punks see what happens

Oh no, 40 yrs ago, the Niners tried to bribe and force the Raiders to leave Oakland (if there's even any truth to that in the first place)...the world is gonna end. But wait, the silver and black attack isn't going anywhere.

Truth: The bigger issue is why the Raiders went from Oakland to L.A. from the early 80s to mid 90s and then back to Oakland? Plus, rumors are flying around that they may move back to L.A. in 2011. Why take your anger out on S.F. when it's your freakin' owner who keeps moving your team back and forth. As far as bribes go, you don't think it was $$$$ that motivated him to move the team in the first place to L.A., then move back to Oakland? If Raiders fans don't see that, they're blind or just plain ignorant. Since your team has given you little reason to be happy in the first place, no wonder you're insulting other teams.

"Ole Roger lets the Pats and Colts play every year, I don’t know why he doesnt do a non-divisional rivalry game every year with the obvious teams (i.e. I’ll take Jamarcus, McFadden, Asamougha and our crew over Smith, Gore and Clements any day. Not only would the Raiders beat the Niners I dont think it would even be very competitive. At least the Giants are good and the A’s suck, that gives you something to hold on to. Oh, wait thats right the OAKLAND A’s are good and the SF Giants suck. What do you guys across the Bay actually have to look forward to?"

Please is that why FRANK GORE RAN 200+ Yards on the pathetic ass Raiders?! Even when you have the best reciever in the league with RANDY MOSS the raiders still SUCK. Thats how pathetic of a franchise you guys have been and always have been. Can't even get back up from the smacking of the Tampa bay Bucs. The raiders are the most rowdiest fans because their team are so pathetic that they get aggrivated. How can you be proud to be a RAIDER fan? Move back to LA, where you might be wanted, but the 49ers is the BAY AREA team because we brought success here and its something the raiders will never do.

Da fader fans are still in shock after Jerry Rice scored that TD against them on national TV to go into the record books. then more trauma is added knowing that the last 3 times we have played them, its been all frisco...and this yr in the preseason, another win over oakland...your pathetic a$$ team is stuck in that division and will never win nothing. its funny how you idiots criticize the 9er fans but take a loot at yourselves...acting like cavemen dressing up in makeup wearing spikes on your shoulders. HAHAHAHHAHA FUKK the faders. oakland dont even want them, LA the biggest market in the US dontw ant them, who wants this crappy a$$ team, nobody? so when u see fader fans gettin all riled up, its all that anger inside..i dont blame them. they have nothing to take the pain away. and if they try to watch baseball they are too dumb to understand it, and their attention span is too low to be able to follow it. the few oakland fans that are smart enough to follow baseball are in pain cuz the good players they do get to have, LEAVE or are traded HAHA, so really its all that anger built up. not to mention the past 2 decades worth of WARRIORS basketball.

Da Faderz also are traumatized still by the time Jerry Rice scored that TD to go into the record books on national television. Also the last 3 times the faders played, frisco owned them, and the same thing this yr this preseason. So if u see the fader fans actin the way they are its cuz they got a lot of anger being a fader fan, i mean, all those pathetic losing seasons...not being able to watch home games, id be pretty pissed off to if that happend over here. on top of that, if they try to escape the pain and watch baseball, theyre too dumb to understand it, and their attention span wont let them so they have to switch the channel (probably to the Landscaping Channel) and the ones that ARE smart enough (very few) to be able to follow baseball are in pain cuz the team is moving and any player that they DO get that is good, ends up getin traded or leaves via free agency HAHAHAH, not to mention the last TWO DECADES of WARRIORS basketball, so you have to understand why the fader fans act the way they do, its just their pathetic a$$ city, thats all. they are jealous cuz we got a winning city and team. GO NINERS and yo ill take smith gore and davis over jamomma russell and darren mcfadden who hasnt even seen a single snap yet, once he gets 1700 yds like ma boy gore then open ur big mouths

Ok, I'm neither a raider fan or a niner fan but I was reading some of your guys posts and I'm sorry Raider fans but Mike49er makes you guys look ridiculous. He backs his shit up with facts. I've been an NFL for quite a while now and I see in all these posts you Raider fans saying the niners didnt have any good teams until the 81 season. However I remember them having some very good teams in the 50's with the million dollar backfield, and also in the early 70's with Dick Nolan. Im a steelers fan and I remember the steelers and raiders of the 70's how they were the top teams. The steelers were dominant but the raiders never seemed to impress me at all. The raiders had a lot of luck go for them and they were nothing like any of the dynasty teams people talk about such as the steelers, niners, and cowboys.

the 49ers started 30 years before the raiders so they got lucky with superbowls and would of been raiders vs 49ers in 2002 but they got smacked in the mouth 31-6 and are you guys brain dead or something the 49ers haven't made it to the playoffs are had a winning season n a while and the packers and the cowboys use to always smack them up in the playoffs when the raiders come back on track the 49ers won't be able to fade them

At least our past glory isn't as distant as the Raiders'. No one said the niners are top right now, just that as bad as we've been we still own the Raiders(who doesn't?) As for the niners getting lucky with super bowls, the niners and raiders are both super bowl era teams, unless you're the Panthers or something you can't cry about the niners being here longer. Realize the truth or burn in hell

RaiderCardAddict:Hmm, wonder how many of these losers are clones of mike, or his family? Ask GoFD how long it took the whiners to win the first championship….go on, guess. we won our first title, AFL, within 10 years, and a super bowl in 16. We won our titles BEFORE San Fran could figure out what a pigskin is.

Mike49er: Well now, aren't you just as special as you can be? lol...So, you're basically talking about back when Kennedy was president? Followed up by wanting to discuss the Vietnam era years?

Which both were very likely 30 years before you were even born??

So, in summary, what you're saying is the Raiders had a better start in their franchise, but then the Niners not only passed you up, but bitchslapped you to the curb, and made you our lawn boy along the way?

Why didn't you just say that to begin with??

In that case, I completely agree with you.

----

And while they like to talk about the present, we’ve been to the super bowl in 2002, almost 10 years AFTER the last time the whiners were there.

Mike49er: I'm sorry, but I believe you're confused. Going to the Super Bowl, and being the recipient of one of the worst slap downs, and humiliating games in NFL history isn't an accolade..it's the worst of the worst. There's one goal, ONE GOAL ONLY, to be champions. Leave it to a idiot Raider fan to brag about supporting a team that even that same head coach of that same SB whupped on team called "The dumbest team in America".

Now, here's your reality check, foolish boy. Raiders last shining glory was in '83. SINCE THEN the Niners have been King of the Mountain four times.

Read it slowly. Use your finger if it will help. We've been champs FOUR TIMES SINCE THE LAST TIME THE RAIDERS got a ring.

Oh..but hey..back in the 60's?? You know..HALF A CENTURY AGO??? you guys rocked, lol...and we're all happy for you.

Served Cold: "the 49ers started 30 years before the raiders

MIKE49ER What the hell is it with "Ebonic Math" Raider fans use? NINERS CAME INTO LEAGUE IN 1950. Raiders came in 1960. That's 10 year, moron. You got confused counting on your fingers again, didn't you?

so they got lucky with superbowls and would of been raiders vs 49ers in 2002 but they got smacked in the mouth 31-6 and are you guys brain dead or something the 49ers haven’t made it to the playoffs are had a winning season n a while

Mike49er: Well, let's see. Last time Niners won the division, and got in the players, yet didn't win it all was 2002.

Last time the Raiders won their division, and got in the playoffs, and didn't win it all was 2002.

Only difference is since then you've been worse than the Niners.

Actually, since then you've been worse than everyone, now, haven't you?

Oh, but hey, you have Kwame Harris protecting your new flouding qb's blind side.

Yeah...that'll work, lol.

For a person who detests the Raiders, Mike, you sure do post a lot on a Raider blog. Maybe you should take all that energy and be a passionate 49er fan instead of coming into a place where you're clearly not wanted.

For all your internet dick holding, and pissing contests, I mean, you do sound like you've got more problems than being offended that there are fans of an NFL team that disagree with you.

Not to mention...you sound like you're a closet Raider fan. You must be used to being closeted though, it seems like you're quick to get on your knees for the so-called dynasty 49ers of the 80s and 90s. When you can stand up and have big boy talks (and after you brush your teeth and wash your face off), then maybe you can finally see what's really important in life...mainly you leaving the Raider fan sites for the Raider fans.
