El Niņo The Latest Beneficiary of Woods' Let Others Have A Chance Tour
5/11/08
I feel bad that I had no idea Sergio Garcia had a good sense of humor on him, but usually when we see him interviewed after a big event he's upset and making up some excuses for why he lost. (see: every major he's ever been in contention going into Sunday)
Sunday afternoon the wind blew the right way for El Niño.
Most recently we saw Garcia putt away the 2007 British Open. Today, Sergio hit a big putt on the 18th to pull even with Paul Goydos, a golfer very few had hear of before today.
On the first playoff hole, appropriate No. 17, Goydos caught a gust of wind and ballooned his ball just short of the green. On Sawgrass' signature hole, that means water. Garcia stuck his shot close enough to win the biggest tournament of his career to date. It's not a major, but the huge $1.7 million dollar purse will do.
Rather than give credit to his great play over the weekend, Garcia thanked the appropriate person - Tiger Woods. He becomes the latest golfer to benefit from Woods recovery from knee surgery. Well done, Sergio.
